Posted January 18th, 2011 05:08 PM IP 470NE at 35 paces. This is the first time I ever fired a double rifle. Like most have stated, I think it's too light for a 470NE, but what do I know, it's also the first time I've shot a 470NE............
All the rounds were fired off shooting sticks with my hand on the sticks and the rifle in my hand. That's 10 shots, if the three hadn't got away from me it would be a pretty good group IMHO.
The bullet holes in the oval are the 470, Villareal was plinking at my target with a 22 revolver.
I was shooting Hornady 500g DGS. I am sure a bit of practice will firm things up but I will be getting a better recoil pad and maybe a recoil reducer.
Villareal shot it once and I took video, he MAY want to post it.
The rifle is in the shop today getting a new recoil pad and stock mounted mercury recoil reducer.

Posted January 19th, 2011 07:40 AM IP Dang Jim, I’m impressed! That ain’t bad shooting for an OLD BLIND MAN. No seriously, that group is looking really good! You probably already know the sights (if three leaf) are set for one hundred or at least that is what my .458 was set up for.
Watched some more utube on hunting “buff” and I aint sure but what them bad boyz is bullet proof! One shows the hunter making four hits from a double and it’s still coming. Off camera there are another four or five shots fired before the critter goes down.
Oh! I went online and looked at the Sabaitti(sic). That is one fine looking shooter and not too pricey for a double. Was I thirty years younger there would be one in my arms locker for sure!

Posted January 19th, 2011 09:16 AM IP Not quite as much observable recoil as I would have imagined, but still, that’s got to sting!

Posted January 19th, 2011 09:34 AM IP Should have called me. I have a mercury reducer setting on my work bench that I should get rid of before the EPA makes me a criminal. "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance,

Pretty much my sentiment
Somewhere on this ranchito there is a brown bottle with about five pounds of the stuff that a Exxon lab tech gave me way back when.

Betcha a penny that if you measure the drop between the two there will be more in the double. I could be wrong. My ex brother in law had a 20 gage H&R that I just could not man up to. The thing had a side profile like a Pennsylvania Long Rifle and was brutal!

Posted January 20th, 2011 10:01 AM IP Jim, if the stock has a lot of drop in it, you are in for a lot of trouble. The recoil will drive the barrels up and back and stick the stock right in your face. Some stock length can help with to make your shoulder take the recoil instead of your face. I'll put the reducer in the truck. "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance,

Posted January 20th, 2011 10:56 AM IP I don't think drop is the issue ( but I'm sure you guys know more about that than me ) I don't have problem with getting face smacked. It seems to drive straight back without much muzzle climb. The damn thing just kicks hard.
Hopefully it will be a bit better after smithing. I don't need to shoot it a bunch............mebbe 10 times a week......I'm tough enough for that.....I hope.

Posted January 20th, 2011 01:03 PM IP If the recoil comes straight back without a lot of muzzle flip (other than the body riding the pulse) I would think that would indicate the drop is ok! There are some shooters that are just going to get your attention! Just about anything with 120 grains of powder is going to cross your eyes! I recall a one time try with a .460 Weatherby. I get weak in the knees just thinking about it! And like you said; it isn’t like you are going to take it to the panhandle for rodent shoots.
Fella came to Lake Houston range with a .375 H&H that had a reducer in the forearm and stock. Also had a Simms Limb Saver recoil pad on it. That turned the gun into a wuss!

Posted January 20th, 2011 03:48 PM IP Well if the drop is not the issue and the recoil goes straight back then you have another problem.....YOU ARE JUST A BIG SISSY.
I'll bet that makes your wife real proud of you....now you got a big one and can't use it. "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance,

Posted January 20th, 2011 03:55 PM IP At least I finally got a big one...................I can live with that.
It's not that I can't use it. I just find that it's hard on my lower back and knees............I just may not wanna use it so much any more.........

I got it back from the smith today, new squishy recoil pad and 12oz mercury recoil reducer. I got my fingers crossed. Hopefully I won't get my eyes crossed.
