Posted November 27th, 2011 06:19 PM IP How many years does it typically last?
What does it smell like when it's too old to use? "A gun is not a weapon Marge, it's a tool. Like a butcher knife, or a harpoon, ... or an alligator."

Posted November 27th, 2011 06:34 PM IP Best answer I have is "it depends". I had some old 4831 that was given to me over 40 years ago. A surplus powder that was sold in the gun shops from 55 gal drums for almost nothing. I didn't do a very good job of controlling the temperature and humidity where it was stored. 2 years ago I loaded some 270 rounds and they shot fine for 2 years. This year, they gave VERY high pressure signs on the brass.
The smell is suppose to be an acidic smell if it is going bad. Another sign would be finding some rusty looking fine powder in the granules of gunpowder. Dispose of bad powder by spreading it in your lawn as you would fertilizer and does the same thing. "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance,
and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing
of misery."
Winston Churchill
I got this rifle for my wife, pretty good trade, don't you think?

Posted November 27th, 2011 07:43 PM IP Pretty much what Kmart said, although I have used some powder that was awfully long in the tooth! They can say what they want, but I don’t think age plays a big part as long as it doesn’t get exposed to a lot of heat and humidity. If you think about it we were using military powder that had been pulled from ammunition that was at least 30 to 40 years old. That is how Hogdon got their start.
