Just another bunch of wannabes?
By Liam Allen
Entertainment reporter, BBC News
In the build-up to the new Big Brother series, the show was roundly written off by journalists, who predicted it would feature yet another group of wannabes stopping at nothing to achieve fame.
True to form, two housemates got "married" on Sunday despite having met for the first time three days earlier.
Mario Marconi, 42, and Stephanie McMichael, 19 - who only found out their wedding was not legally binding later - were instructed as part of their task to hide Mario's real romance with fellow housemate Lisa Appleton.
Student Luke Marsden, 20, was also in on the secret and, because they failed to keep the secret, all four now face the public vote.
All of which led to an eminently watchable start to Big Brother 9.
Extra focus
For Stephanie, the horror of acting out intimacies with a man 23 years her senior did not take long to materialise.
With Mario one of the first to retire to bed on the show's first night - reserving a place in his luxury double bed for his new girlfriend - Stephanie could not hide her disgust at the prospect of joining him.
OTHER BIG BROTHER 'SECRETS'
2000: In BB1, "Nasty" Nick admits lying about his secret wife dying in a car crash in Australia
2004: In a fake eviction in BB5, Michelle and Emma were moved to a secret "bedsit" where they watched the house on monitors
2005: In BB6, Makosi successfully got the most nominations to avoid being up for the public vote
2007: In BB8, housemates guessed Australian housemate "Pauline" was an actress
"He's sprawling and he's snoring," she confided in the diary room on the first night. "You bastards."
She subsequently stayed up all night with three other housemates, leaving Mario to sprawl and snore on his own.
As well as the four contestants facing the public vote, a number of housemates have been singled out for extra focus by the show's editors.
They include Thai massage therapist Kathreya Kasisopa, already favourite with the bookies, who has provided the most laugh-out-loud moments with her quest to learn more English words.
"D - I - N - I - T - Y, dignity," the 30-year-old said in the diary room.
Knickers row
Second-favourite, meanwhile, is 33-year-old Mikey Hughes, a blind cross-dressing stand-up comedian.
On the night of hen and stag dos ahead of Sunday's wedding, Mikey dressed as a Playboy bunny girl and, on top of his outfit, pulled on a pair of women's knickers he found in the bathroom.
It was this incident that led to the first glimpse of the horrifying vocal power of Alexandra De-Gale - BB9's scariest character.
Incensed on behalf of fellow housemate Sylvia Barrie, whose knickers Mikey had tampered with, she launched into an unrelenting, obscenity-laced tirade.
It was made all the more frightening by the sore throat that had left Alex's voice reduced to a bulldog-like bark.
The effect was to alert her fellow housemates to the fact that she is not someone to be messed with.
It also led to bookmakers ranking her with odds of 125/1 - making her the housemate least likely to be crowned winner, and one of the most unpopular Big Brother contestants of all time.
FIRST WEEK BIG BROTHER AUDIENCES
Thurs 5: 5.3m
Fri 6: 3.9m
Sat 7: 2.8m
Sun 8: 3.5m
Mon 9: 3.4m
Tue 10: 3.7m
Figures are early overnight estimates for the main night-time show on Channel 4 and Channel 4+1
On Tuesday night's show, Alex was reprimanded by Big Brother for "bullying" other characters and "abusive behaviour" after a row over some burnt chips.
One fan of the show, wrote on a message board about the "worst case yet" of "disgusting behaviour" on Big Brother.
"How can any normal person target a blind man and then a three-hour rant on an innocent girl all over a couple of chips," they added.
As well as a divisive task, the show already has some of the other ingredients crucial to a successful Big Brother broth:
* The villain - a role filled in previous years by the likes of "Nasty" Nick Bateman, "jungle cat" Jason Cowan and the argumentative Charley Uchea. This year, Alex has taken on the character with aplomb.
* A love story - viewers have watched Dale Howard's charm offensive on young mum Jennifer Clark start to pay dividends. Previous Big Brother couples have included Ziggy and Chanelle, Nikki and Pete, and Paul and Helen.
* Nudity - provided by a topless Rebecca jumping into the pool. Former contestants to have revealed flesh include BB1 winner Craig Phillips and Michelle Jubin, who stripped off to mow the lawn in BB5.
So far, the number of column inches devoted to BB9 in both tabloids and broadsheets has been respectable - while not comparable to the frenzied coverage of the show's early days when Jade Goody and Nick Bateman made many front pages.
Viewing figures have been slightly lower than last year's average audience of 3.8 million.
But, all in all, the secret wedding task and its repercussions - together with the emergence of arguably the show's nastiest ever character - have made for one of the Big Brother's strongest opening weeks in years.
The question now is whether the standard can be maintained beyond the honeymoon period.

Alexandra Leaves The House
Alex is removed from Big Brother for repeated unacceptable behaviour...
Contestant Alexandra De-Gale has been removed from the Big Brother House for repeatedly breaking the programme's rules on conduct by behaving in an unacceptable and sometimes intimidating manner towards fellow housemates.
Alex was in discussion with Darnell in the living room shortly after 10.15pm yesterday evening (17th June), with a number of other housemates in proximity.
Discussing her nomination for this week's eviction, Alex was heard to make apparently intimidatory comments about her intentions on leaving the House. Shortly afterwards, Dennis, Rebecca and Rex discussed her comments in the garden and were clear that they found her behaviour to be threatening, a view that Rex repeated subsequently during a Diary Room discussion with Big Brother.
This incident follows a series of arguments involving Alex since the ninth series of Big Brother started on 5th June. She has twice been called to the diary room and reminded of the rules governing behaviour towards other housemates.
There has been a strong negative reaction from viewers to Alex's behaviour with Channel 4 having received a significant number of comments since launch.
Her latest remarks were not screened via the 'as live' streaming on E4 but were reported up to senior production staff. In consultation with executives at Channel 4 the decision was taken to remove Alex from the house on the grounds that she had repeatedly broken the programme's rules governing housemate behaviour, despite twice being reminded of her responsibilities.
Alex was called to the Diary Room at approximately 8pm on Wednesday 18th June to be informed of the decision and was removed from the House without further contact with other contestants. The remaining housemates were informed of Big Brother's decision at approximately 9.15pm.
Alex was one of two housemates nominated for eviction this week and as a result, in line with the terms and conditions covering phone voting on Big Brother, the latest eviction vote has been suspended.
Angela Jain, Head of E4 and Big Brother at Channel 4, said: "Alex has said her comments were not intended seriously and has apologised, but those comments will be widely interpreted as having been intended to intimidate. Big Brother has very clear rules about housemates conduct and that kind of behaviour is simply not acceptable.
Other housemates have said they found her comments to be threatening and we believe that is a reasonable conclusion for them to have reached given the way Alex has behaved previously. She had already been spoken to twice about her behaviour and, like all housemates, was clearly informed before entering the house that she faced eviction if she acted in an unacceptable manner."

Free At Last
Rebecca busts Luke out of jail
After a very short sentence of about five hours, Luke has been set free to gossip another day -- and he's even being allowed to nominate.
Having gone in to fight for her incarcerated friend's rights, Rebecca burst out of the Diary Room and ran through the Living Area shouting "Quick! Quick! Get the Get Out Of Jail Free card now! Luke's allowed to nominate if I give it up! Where is it?"
The Get Out of Jail Free card came with last week's shopping, and was therefore a reward to the whole group for winning the task. "Everyone should have to vote on it," said Rex pointedly, as Rebecca searched for the token.
Jennifer didn't agree. "Out of fairness, Rex, we're all in this experience and nominating is part of the experience." Yeah, but Luke did break the rules...
At this point Rebecca ran back through waving the token triumphantly. "Everyone has to vote on it. You can't just take it in," Mohamed told her firmly, with Rex agreeing.
Rebecca sighed and rolled her eyes, before heading back to her friends in the Garden. "Does everyone vote that we give this to them so Luke can nominate?" she asked Jennifer and Dale.
"Yeah," they replied.
"Everyone agrees!" Rebecca declared, making a winning stand for democracy.
But at this point other housemates started to convene on the lawn, and Rebecca was forced to wait for a chaotic show of hands. With the majority voting in favour of Luke's release (and the prisoner himself pleading from his cell), Rebecca marched off to the Diary Room with the token.
So Luke's out, and he can nominate after all. But has justice been served? Or did parole come too early for this offender?

Brokeback Bedroom
Day 26 - Mon 30 Jun 2008, 21:28 PM
Dale tells Luke he'd go on a date with him...
In a moment of boredom, Luke enlisted Dale and Rebecca for a game of Truth Or Truth - a cunning variation on the time-worn original which probably doesn't need too much explaining.
"Okay Becs," he said with a flourish, "Truth or Truth - would you ever go out with a male housemate?"
"Why not," said a tired-sounding Rebecca.
"It doesn't have to be sexual," chipped in Dale as the three of them lounged on a bed, before he dropped a bombshell.
"I'd go on a date with you Luke," he stated.
Pins could be heard dropping a mile away...
"Thanks Dale," said Luke sarcastically.
"We could go to the cinema," suggested Dale.
Rebecca decided that she was feeling left out and began caressing Luke's earlobes. As you do.
"Stop it," he giggled. "I'd appreciate it if you didn't touch my earlobes - we're from different worlds."
A bout of wrestling followed, putting Luke in a rather compromising position.
"My head was in Dale's crotch at that point," he said once he'd wriggled free, wrinkling his nose.
And before long, the conversation inevitably turned to bellybuttons of all things.
"It's bad, mine like," said Dale. "Let's have a look at yours," he asked Luke.
A simple "yeah" indicated he was unimpressed. "Yeah, but look at mine," Dale said excitedly.
But Luke had his eyes on something else. "What's all this hair leading down?" he asked innocently.
"It's, like, a little thing," said Dale quietly.
Aww, don't be so hard on yourself lad...

Remorseful Rebecca
Day 26 - Mon 30 Jun 2008, 20:17 PM
Rebecca starts to regret her revenge on Mohamed...
Rebecca has admitted that she may have gone too far by cutting up the belt she made for Mohamed after he took her tobacco.
"Feel a bit bad about cutting his belt up," Rebecca told Luke and Mario in the Luxury Bedroom, as she plonked herself on the bed.
"Don't feel bad," asserted Luke.
"Ahh, Becs, that's a bit wrong," sighed Mario on hearing that she'd taken a knife to Mohamed's birthday present.
"I was just snarling and steam was coming out my ears," Rebecca explained, before telling them that she'd been called to the Diary Room to discuss the incident.
"You got in trouble, for defacing a belt that YOU made," yapped a horrified Luke.
"I never get angry like this on the outside world, I'm really annoyed with myself," Rebecca chuckled, "I'm saying things like 'I wanna leave'."
Her meandering stream of consciousness eventually led to her making a statement so dramatic that Luke's jaw almost left a dent in the carpet:
"There are certain people in here that I don't want to live with - I feel like I'm the only normal person in here," she said.
"God, if you're normal..," replied Luke, unable to finish the sentence.
"I wanna get back to myself again, I'm finding it hard," Rebecca lamented, "I feel moody, I feel angry, it's bad. I don't know what I've become..."

Fur Trade
Day 27 - Tue 01 Jul 2008, 14:45 PM
Four legs good, two legs bad...
Huge animal costumes have arrived in the Big Brother Zoo, and the housemates are now fully looking the part.
Jennifer and Rebecca were provided with some unflattering grey seal suits -- if this doesn't stop the boys fancying Jennifer, nothing will. Dale and Rex are in kangaroo costumes, although this has not stopped Dale from regularly taking his hat off to check his hair.
Mohamed and Darnell look sweet in their fluffy bunny costumes and have already started tucking into the carrots. Let's hope they don't reproduce at rabbit levels.
"You don't have to eat the stalk," Dale pointed out as Darnell scoffed one whole.
"Dude, I'm a hardcore bunny," was the solemn reply, with the other rabbit nodding in agreement.
Kathreya took several minutes to squeeze into her side of the llama suit, but is now successfully trundling around the House with Rachel in tandem.
Luke was exasperated as he and Michael struggled with their elephant costumes. "Oh no, no, no, no, no," he said, despairingly. "When have you ever seen a blue elephant? Mikey, this is absurd."
Catching sight of Mario in his safari-style zookeeper costume, the elephant then started to shout, "It's Jumanji! It's Jumanji!"
"I can't get that belt on," said the zookeeper, sadly. It's your rippling muscles, Mario.
But Lisa, sporting a huge beak and fat bottom (in her flamingo costume, obviously) seemed to like her boyfriend's new look. "You look sexy, Mario!" she purred.
"The zookeeper's having an affair with the flamingo here! Don't tell the rest of the animals!" joked Mario.
"Am I a sexy bird?" responded Lisa flirtatiously.
It wasn't long before the flamingo and the zookeeper were snogging. Spot-squeezing and now giant animal costumes: does nothing turn these two off?

Big Brother housemate Jennifer Clark is the bookmakers' favourite to get the boot from the Channel 4 show.
The 22-year-old part-time model will face the public vote along with chef Rex Newmark, 24, after both of them received six nominations each.
The contestant who is voted out will become the third contestant to be evicted from series nine.
Student Stephanie McMichael and Sylvia Barrie have already been ousted by a public vote.
Housemates Alexandra De-Gale and Dennis McHugh, meanwhile, were removed from the show for unacceptable behaviour.
Speaking in the diary room, Rex, who nominated Jennifer, said: "She is the boiling point of all arguments."
Dale Howard nominated Rex and branded him "controlling".
Kathreya Kasisopa, a 30-year-old Thai-born massage therapist from Kent, is the current favourite to win the show
