Willard Andrew Estep
(September 16, 1918 - December 26, 2009)

Ewing, VA

Willard Andrew Estep of Ewing, Virginia passed away Saturday, December 26th , 2009 at his home. Born in Lee County on September 16, 1918, he was the son of the late Jacob Meb and Mamie Ray Estep. At the time of his death, he was the oldest member of the Big Spring Union Baptist Church.

In addition to his patents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Ruth Gilpin Estep and a loving stepmother, Onohlee Estep, to whom he was dearly devoted; brothers, Promer Frank Estep, Bruce Allen Estep, Shultz Kenneth Estep, Dale Willis Estep, Donnie Estep, and James Carson Estep; and sisters, Hazel Estep Brown and Jean Estep Perkins.

Willard grew up in the edge of Lee County, near the Big Spring Union Community of Claiborne County, Tennessee. As a member of America’s greatest generation, he served with the 3rd Army, 95th Infantry Division, from Omaha Beach to near Metz, France, where he was seriously wounded on November 26, 1944. He never forgot his wedding anniversary as he and Ruth were married one year earlier on the same day. Following his honorable discharge from the service in 1945, he and other family members began a “rolling grocery store” business in Lee and Claiborne County. In 1951 he and Ruth began a business known as Estep’s Grocery near Ewing and operated it until 1987. After retiring from the store, he enjoyed gardening, taking care of his cattle, and “Lou” his most special cat. Most of all, he enjoyed telling his “stories” to family and friends.

Son and daughter-in-law, Terry and Suzanne Estep, Ewing, Virginia

Daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Frank Turner, Jr. Ewing, Virginia

Grandchildren, Tara Estep Williams (Byron), Stacy Estep Munsey (Michael), Torry Estep Taylor (Scott), Sasha Estep-Hixson (Andrew), Teri Estep, Ryan Turner, Amber Turner Inofuentes (Jason)

Great grandchildren, Dylan Williams, Megan Williams, and Benjamin Hixson

Many nieces and nephews

Willard is also survived by special people who helped care for him with love, Joann Manning, Tammy Hargraves, Jean Gibbeons and Gloria McCurry.

Visitors will be received on Monday, December 28th at Arney-Mullins Funeral Home in Rose Hill, Virginia from 6 – 8 p.m. with funeral service following with Rev. Frank B. Turner, Jr. officiating. Burial will be at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, December 29th in Jones Cemetery, Ewing, Virginia. Memorial contributions may be sent to Jones Cemetery Fund, c/o Farmers and Miners Bank, PO. Morrison Slagle
(October 12, 1936 - December 25, 2009)

Pennington Gap, VA Morrison (Alex) Slagle age 73 of the Hickory Flats community passed away Friday morning, December 25 in the Heritage Hall Health Care in Big Stone Gap, VA. He was born in Lee County, and was a veteran of the U. S. Air Force. He had resided in Florida for 30 years and retired as an Air Traffic Controller for the Federal Aviation Administration. He returned to Lee County in 1992. He was preceded in death by his father, Woodrow Slagle and his paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Morrison Green Slagle.

Survivors include:

Betty Wood Slagle of the home. One daughter, Marina Slagle of Jacksonville, FL., One son, Morrison Slagle, Jr. and wife, Cindy of Callahan, Fl., 5 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. One brother, George Slagle, of St. Augustine, FL.

Calling hours will be 6 until 8:00 P. M. Monday evening, December 28, at Sturgill Funeral Home in Pennington Gap.

Funeral services will be conducted at 8:00 P. M. with Rev. Betty Marshall officiating.

Committal graveside services will be held 11:00 A. M. Tuesday in Lee Memorial Gardens in Woodway.

James Bennett (Fats) Sadler
(December 1, 1946 - December 26, 2009)

James Bennett (Fats) Sadler, Sr., was born on December 1, 1946 in Lee County, Virginia and passed away on December 26, 2009 at Lee Regional Medical Center at the age of 63.

Ben worked as a life guard at the Jonesville pool as a teen ager; he later worked at Cas Walkers in Pennington Gap, and also did farm work.

Ben enjoyed fishing, hunting, shooting pool, and spending time with family.

Ben accepted the Lord Jesus as his Savior as a teenager and professed his faith and love for God his entire life.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Davis Sadler; his father, W. H. (Hughie) Sadler; and two brothers, Max Sadler and Hank Sadler.

He is survived by:

Son, Ben Sadler, Jr. and wife Cynthia of Jonesville, VA

Two daughters, Marianne Arney and husband, Matt, of Jonesville, VA and Rachel Smith and husband, Bill, of Pennington Gap, VA

Mother of his children, Carol Seale of Jonesville, VA

Brother, Eric Sadler of Pennington Gap, VA

Three sisters, Emma Smith and husband, Bill; Vickie Daniels and husband, Mike, all of Jonesville and Eileen Pearson of Pennington Gap, VA

Seven grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, and special nephews, Michael and Shawn Daniels and Randy Sadler.

Calling hours will be 6 to 8 p. m. Sunday at Arney-Mullins Funeral Home in Jonesville.

Cecil G. Smith, age 92 of the Wallens Creek Community passed away Saturday morning, December 26, at his residence. He was a lifelong resident of Lee County, the son of the late Dawson and Alice Marie Bowens Smith. He retired from Holston Defense as an electrician after 30 years of service.

He was also a farmer, and a member of the Mispah Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by 3 brothers: Nobel, Earl, and Jack Smith.

Survivors include: His wife, Ruth Smith of the home. One daughter, Linda Sutherland and husband Mark of Abingdon, VA, Two sons, Michael Smith and wife Lisa of Hampton, VA, James E. Smith and wife Linda of Gate City, VA. 9 grandchildren, and 18 great grandchildren. A special sister-in-law ,Opal Smith. A special thank you to Lisa and Freda of Wellmont Hospice.

Calling hours will be from 1 until 2:00 P.M. on Monday, December 28, at Sturgill Funeral Home in Pennington Gap.

J. B. Combs, 87, passed away Sunday, December 27, 2009 at Lee Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Pennington Gap, Virginia.

J. B. was a lifelong resident of Lee County, was a retired rural mail carrier and farmer, a member of the Galilee Christian Church, a veteran of WW II and was a member of the American Legion Post #185.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Cephas Combs and Jane Wygal Combs.

He is survived by:

Harvey J. Catron of St. Charles, Va. was born in St. Charles on Monday, December 23, 1935 and passed away Sunday, December 27, 2009 at the Bristol Regional Medical Center in Bristol, TN. at the age of 74 years. He had been a resident of Lee County, Va. his entire life.

Harvey had been a coal miner and a member of the Beacon Light Baptist Church in St. Charles, Va. He was preceded in death by his parents Fred and Mae Marcum Catron, granddaughter Leia Laningham, son-in-law Jimmy Laningham, one brother Smith Catron and an infant brother.

Harvey is survived by his wife Wanda Sue Catron of the home, two sons Acie Catron of Staunton, Va. and Harvey Matthew Catron of Waynesboro, Va., five daughters Mary Elizabeth Catron of St. Charles, Va., Helen Sue Laningham of St. Charles, Va., Wanda May Catron of Milledgeville, Ga., Diane Catherine Catron of Pennington Gap, Va. and Debbra Elaine Taylor of St. Charles, Va., 17 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren, two sisters Mary Moore and Jolean Grumbrock and three brothers Howard Catron, Harold Catron and Charles Catron.

The memorial service will be held at 7:00 PM Saturday, January 2, 2010 at the Province Funeral Home Sanctuary in Pennington Gap, Va. with Rev. Clyde Hester officiating.

Nellie “Granny” Roberts, 94, passed away Tuesday (Dec. 29, 2009) at Tri-State Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Harrogate, Tennessee. She was a lifelong resident of Lee County and a member of Morgan Memorial United Methodist Church in Rose Hill, Virginia.

She was preceded in death by husbands, Bill Wires and Wesley Roberts; parents, William and Vinia Cottrell; eight sisters, Nora Gibson, Rosa Mizner, Tina Fee, Cornie Harber, Laura Dean, Florence Dean, Dee Johnson, and Ida Lakins; two brothers, Vester and Homer Cottrell; three sons, Carl, Kenneth and Jimmy Wires; one grandson, Bubby Wires.

She is survived by:

Margaret Cooper of Xenia, Ohio and formerly of New Bremen, Ohio was born in Dayton, Ohio on Sunday, March 27, 1927 and passed away, Wednesday, December 30, 2009 at the Hospitality Home in Xenia, Ohio at the age of 82 years.

She was preceded in death by her husband Dewey Cooper, her parents George and Elizabeth Josephine Beckman Wilson, and three grandsons Richard, Shawn and Shane Toler.

Margaret is survived by her daughters Vera Cooper of Big Stone Gap, Va. and Linda Laveck and husband, Jim of Xenia, Ohio, three grandchildren Angie Kyne and husband, Jay, Robert Leveck and Alicia Bowen and several great-grandchildren, one sister Clara Marie Wilson of Farmington Hill, Mi. She is also survived by her extended family Joe and Donna Ledbetter, Faith Ann Johnson, Danny and Alice Ledbetter, Tondra and Dan Steinke and her special friend Jeanette Brunson.

The funeral will be held at 1:00 PM Saturday in the Sanctuary of the Province Funeral Home in Pennington Gap, Va.

George Mack Stapleton, age 76 of Pennington Gap, Va. left this world to start a new life with his lord and savior on Friday, January 1, 2010. He was born in Lee Co. on Friday, April 7, 1933. He was a member of the Fleenors Chapel Baptist Church of Jonesville, Va. He was preceded in death by his father, Harden H. Stapleton and mother Jennie Stapleton and one brother, Junior Darrell Stapleton.

He is survived by his wife Betty Marie Roberts Stapleton, one step-son, Randell Lane Stapleton and wife Phillis of Homer Ga.

Kyle Willis of Cincinnati, Oh. was born in the Bonny Blue Community of St. Charles, Va. on Tuesday, November 27, 1928 and passed away Friday, January 1, 2010 at the Mercy Hospital in Mt. Airy, Oh. at the age of 81 years. He had been a resident of Ohio for the past 43 years.

Kyle retired as a machinist and was of the Baptist Faith. He was preceded in death by his wife Betty Lou Sexton Willis, his parents Dan and Lillian Carroll Willis, brothers Cecil Smith,T.J. and Beryl Willis and an infant brother Jimmy Willis and one sister Oneida Sergent.

Kyle is survived by two sons, Tracy Willis and Gary Willis both of Cincinnati, Oh., one daughter, Kathy Downing of Cincinnati, Oh., four grandchildren and one great-grandchild, one brother Curtis Willis of Jonesville, Va., one sister Reba Lamb of Xenia, Oh. and many nieces and nephews.

Wanda Woods of Stickleyville, Va. was born there on Tuesday, November 8, 1938 and passed away Sunday, January 3, 2010 at the Lonesome Pine Hospital in Big Stone Gap, Va. at the age of 71 years. She had been a resident of Indiana for about 20 years and she had returned to Lee County in 1982.

Wanda had been a caregiver and was of the Baptist Faith. She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Maude Lane Harless, brothers, Billy, Joe and Tommy Harless and one sister, Emma Jean Thrasher.

Wanda is survived by one son Tim Woods of Mooresville, In., one daughter, Connie Woods of Greenwood, In., eight grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, two brothers, James Delmar Harless of Mooresville, In. and Lee Harless of Stickleyville, Va. and one sister, Julia Pugh of Ewing, Va.

The funeral service will be held at 8:00 PM Wednesday, January 6, 2010 at the Province Funeral Home Sanctuary in Pennington Gap, Va. with Rev. Warren Pugh and Lawrence Freeman officiating.

Visitation will be from 6:00 PM Wednesday until the time of the service.

John Junior Benfield of Ocoonita, Va., was born in Lee County, Va. on Wednesday, June 23, 1937 and passed away Wednesday, January 6, 2010 at the Holston Valley Hospital in Kingsport, TN. at the age of 72 years. He had lived in Lee County, Va. most of his life.

John was a Veteran of the US Army and attended the Occoonita Freewill Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Reba Benfield, parents John and Thelma Benfield, one brother Orville Benfield and one sister, Shirley Pearson.

John is survived by two sons, Jeff Benfield of Jonesville, Va. and John Benfield and wife, Sybilla of Belfast, Va., two grandchildren Austin Benfield and Todd Stacy, one brother Kenneth Benfield of Pennington Gap, Va. and four sisters, Sue Gouge of Bakerville, N.C., Sharon Ellis of Johnson City, TN., Emma Snowden of Sandlick, Va. and Alma Leedy of Woodway, Va.

Edward Marion Stacy, a resident of Pennington Gap, Va. was born in St. Charles, Va. on Wednesday August 8, 1917 and passed away at the Wellmont Lee Regional Hospital in Pennington Gap, Va. on Friday, January 8, 2010 at the age of 92. He was a retired farmer, had been living in Lee Co. his entire life and was a member of the First Christian Church in Pennington Gap, Va.

Ed was preceded in death by his son, Frank Stacy, parents, A. J. and Mollie Stacy, two sisters, Gladys Robbins and Ida Stacy and one brother, Jack Stacy.

Ed is survived by his wife, Marie Stacy of the home. Two sons, Ed B. Stacy of Dryden and Robert Stacy of Powell, Tn. He is also survived by four grandchildren, Rachael Stacy, James Stacy, Anna Stacy and Evan Stacy and one sister, Virginia Willey of Knoxville, Tn.

The funeral will be held at 3:00 PM Sunday in the Sanctuary of the Province Funeral Home in Pennington Gap, Va. with Bob Richards officiating.

Visitation will be from 2:30 until time of the service Sunday. Burial will follow in the Cecil-Frye Cemetery in Pennington Gap, Va.

R C Stewart, Jr. better known as Junior, a resident of the Stone Creek Community of Rt. 1 Pennington Gap, Va. was born in the Sand Lick Community of Rt. 1 St. Charles, Va. on Tuesday, May 11, 1971 and passed away at the Lee Regional Medical Center in Pennington Gap, Va. on Friday, January 8, 2010 at the age of 38 years. He was a mechanic, had lived his entire life in Lee Co. and was of the Baptist belief.

Junior was preceded in death by his parents, R C and Hazel Musick Stewart, Sr. one sister, Susan Hall and one infant brother.

Junior is survived by his companion, Dorothy (Dottie) Mullins of the home, one daughter, Amber Stewart and fiancé Will Hurley of Hurley, Va.

Junior is also survived by three brothers, James Stewart and wife Barbara of Jonesville, Va., Bob Stewart and wife Wilma (Willie) of Lenoir City, TN., and Gil Stewart of Pennington Gap, Va.

Howard E. Cradic, a resident of Pennington Gap, Va. was born in St. Charles, Va. on Friday, May 4, 1926 and went to his eternal rest on Saturday, January 16, 2010 at the age of 83 years. He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Peggy Salyers Cradic, parents, Robert Newman Cradic and Elsie Cradic Stacy, two sisters, Wilma Jean Murr and Jeanette Morgan, two brothers, Johnny Cradic, and Clarence Cradic and a granddaughter, Kimberly Cradic Tabor. He was a veteran of the U S Navy, having served in the Asian Theater aboard the USS Randolph during WWll. He lived in Harlan Co. Kentucky for 20 years before returning to Lee Co. 22 years ago.

Howard is survived by two sons, Larry Cradic and wife Suzie of Dryden, Va., Tim Cradic and wife Susie of Jonesville, Va. Two daughters, Sherry Collins and husband Carl of Lynch, Ky. and Brenda Cradic of the home. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Adam Cradic, Matthew Cradic, Melanie Bacon, Randy Cradic and Kharla Sherman and husband Brad. His great-grandchildren, Nicole Cradic, Brittany Tabor, Britta Rash, Kayla Tabor, Christian Bacon, Lauren Bingham and Brandon Cradic.

Howard is also survived by two great-great-grandchildren, McKenzie Cradic and Kaylin Rash, three sisters, Irene Peck of Sevierville, Tn, Bonnie Goforth of Blountville, Tn and Vivian Clark of Indianapolis, Ind. and a host of nieces and nephews.

The funeral service will be held at 1:00 PM Thursday, February 4, 2010 at the Smith Church of God in Smith, Ky. with Rev. Charles Long and Rev. Doug Daniel officiating.

She will lie in state at the church from 11:00 AM Thursday until the time of the service.

Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 PM Wednesday at the Province Funeral Home Sanctuary in Pennington Gap, Va.

Burial will follow at the Hensley Cemetery in Smith, Ky.

Hascue Spears, a resident of Woodway, Va. was born in Lee Co. on Tuesday, October 29, 1929 and passed away on Sunday, January 30, 2010 at her home. She has lived most of her life in Woodway and was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Jack Spears, her parents, Harrison and Martha Allen Collier, her brothers, John Ed, Sylvester and Ford Collier, her sisters, Lenice Harmon and Lillian Cheek.

Hascue is survived by one daughter, Louise Johnson and husband, Dickie of Surgoinsville, Tn., two sons, Worley Jack Spears and wife, Brenda of Church Hill, Tn and Bradley Spears of Woodway, Va.

She is also survived by 7 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, 5 great-great-grandchildren and two sisters, Geneva Wells of Texas and Carrie Mae Ruth of Florida and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be held at 8:00 PM Tuesday in the Sanctuary of the province funeral home in Pennington Gap, Va. with Gary Morefield officiating.

Visitation will be from 6:00 PM until time of the service on Tuesday.

The graveside service will be held at 1:00 PM on Wednesday at Lee Memorial Gardens in Woodway. Va.

Family and friends are asked to meet at the funeal home at 12 noon to go to the cemetery.

Jackie Lynn Spears, Scott Derrick, Darrell Harmon, David Joyner and Jeff Mayes will serve as pall bearers. Music will be provided by Nicole Johnson.

Michael Mike Daniels of Jonesville, Va. was born in Oak Ridge, TN. on Thursday, January 8, 1959 and passed away Sunday, January 31, 2010 at the Lee Regional Medical Center in Pennington Gap, Va. at the age of 51 years. He had been a resident of Jonesville, Va. most of his life.

Mike was a disabled coal miner and of the Baptist Faith. He was preceded in death by his parents, Kenneth and Juanita Daniels, one brother Leon Daniels and three sisters, Diane Daniels, Debbie Hall and Marsha Daniels.

Mike is survived by his wife, Vickie Daniels of the home, two sons Michael Daniels, Jr. and fiancé, Christie Baker of Stickleyville, Va. and Shawn Daniels of the home, two grandsons, Kory Daniels of Woodway, Va. and Kody Daniels of Stickleyville, Va., one brother, Randall Daniels and several nieces and nephews and many friends and special friend, Lindsey Flanary of Pennington Gap, Va.

Funeral service will be held at 8:00 PM Thursday, February 4, 2010 at the Province Funeral Home Sanctuary in Pennington Gap, Va. with Paul Davis, Jr. officiating.

Visitation will be from 6:00 PM Thursday until the time of the service.

The graveside service will be at 11:00 AM Friday at the Daniels Cemetery in Pennington Gap, Va.

The family and friends are asked to meet at the funeral home at 10:15 AM Friday to go to the cemetery.
