Billy King Welch, Jr., 49, of Jonesville, Virginia, passed away Monday (May 31, 2010) at the Wellmont Lee Regional Medical Center in Pennington Gap, Virginia.
He was a member of Morgan Memorial United Methodist Church.

Funeral services will be conducted at 8:00 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Harry Layell, the Rev. Norman Clark, and the Rev. Danny Wilder officiating.

Graveside services will be conducted at 10:00 a.m. Friday in the Welch Cemetery in the Hubbard Springs Community.

Those wishing to attend are asked to meet at the funeral home by 8:45 a.m. Friday to go to the cemetery in procession.

Evelyn McCracken
Keokee, VA

Evelyn McCracken, a resident of the Shepard Hill Community in Keokee, Va. was born in the Rawhide Community in Keokee on Monday, February 19, 1945 and passed away Thursday, June 3, 2010 at the Lee Regional Medical Center in Pennington Gap, Va. at the age of 67 years. She had lived in Lee County, Va. her entire life.

Evelyn had been a homemaker and a member of the Hoover Hill Baptist Church in Keokee. She was preceded in death by one son, William McCracken, her husband, Don McCracken, her father, Earl Russell and one brother, Doug Russell.

Evelyn is survived by one son, Deward D. McCracken, Jr. and wife, Brenda of Keokee, Va., one daughter, Patricia Ann Wade and husband, Pnut of Jonesville, Va., her mother, Velma Russell of Keokee, Va., three grandchildren; Sheena Wade and Sean Kennedy, Melanie Wade and Deacon McCracken, one great-grandchild, Tallulah Kennedy, brothers, Darrell Russell, Howard Russell, Ricky Russell and Gene Russell all of Keokee, Va. and sisters, Sue Ratcliff, Lori Garrett, Lisa Lee and Donna Smith all of Keokee, Va.

The funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM Monday, June 7, 2010 at the Province Funeral Home Sanctuary in Pennington Gap, Va. with Rev. Darrell Russell officiating.

The visitation will be from 9:00 AM Monday morning until the time of the service.

Burial will follow at the Holmes Cemetery in Keokee, Va.

Gladys Irene Scott, 86, of Rose Hill, Virginia, passed away Wednesday (June 2, 2010) with her family by her side.

Born June 17, 1923, she was the daughter of Henry and Omie Davis. She was a lifelong resident of Lee County, Virginia. She was a homemaker and loved gardening, traveling, and yard sales.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Obie Scott; three sons, Elmer Scott, Lester, Scott, and Willard Scott; two brothers, Arthur Davis and Sewell Davis; and one sister, Dorothy Cheek.

Surviving are:

Her children: Anna Ruth Roark of Rose Hill, Virginia, David and Charlotte Scott of Ewing, Virginia, and Pauline Brashear and husband, Eugene of Frederick, Maryland

Edith Golden Thomas, 93, passed away Friday, June 4, 2010, at Wellmont Lee Regional Medical Center in Pennington Gap, VA.

She was a member of the Hardy’s Creek Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by husband, Cellie Thomas; son, Olin Thomas; parents, Andy and Polly Ingle; two brothers, Hubert and Homer Ingle; and two sisters, Francis and Audrey Ingle.

She is survived by:

Linda Alsup Young of Left Poor Valley went to be with her Lord and Savior on Friday, June 4, 2010 at the Johnson City Medical Center in Johnson City, TN. She was a lifelong resident of Lee County and the daughter of the late Ray and Rettie Hurd Alsup. She was a graduate of Pennington High School and was an LPN for several years until becoming a full time Nana. She was a member of Smyth Chapel United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her brother, Paul Alsup.

Survivors include her husband, Mike Young; son; Michael Young. Daughter; Monique and husband, Rick Sprinkle. Beloved grandsons, Jacob and Daniel Sprinkle. Brother; Boyd Alsup and wife Rose. Sister; Dorothy Alsup, and a host of family and friends.

A Graveside service only will be held at 6:00 p. m. Monday, June 7, 2010 at Lee Memorial Gardens in Woodway with Rev. Darrell Hensley officiating.

Everyone is asked to meet at the cemetery.

Robert Colburn “Buddy” Sharpe, 63, of Rose Hill, Virginia passed away Saturday, June 5, 2010 at his residence after a lengthy illness.

He was a timber cutter and a member of the Calvary Missionary Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Joe and America “Mercke” Sharpe, two sisters, Betty “Polly” Saylor and Lanna “Smidge” Fee; infant brother, Gary Allan Sharpe; infant daughter, Tammy Maxine Sharpe and one infant great granddaughter.

He is survived by:

James T. Jake Burke, a resident of Pennington Gap, Va. was born in the Belgium Hollow Comm., Rt. 1 Pennington Gap, Va. on Thursday, June 19, 1924 and went to be with his Lord on Saturday, June 5, 2010 at the Lee Regional Medical Center in Pennington Gap, Va. at the age of 85 years. He was preceded in death by his beautiful wife, Dorothy Fleenor Burke, a daughter, Irene Elizabeth, his parents, Harrison and Myrtle Cooper Burke, two brothers, Frank & Alvin Burke and two sisters, Evelyn Whitt and Gracie Ricketts.

Jake spent most of his life in Lee Co. but did live in Michigan for several years where he worked for the Buick Plant. As a young man he worked in the CCC Camp in Jonesville, Va. which was started by President Roosevelt. He had also worked in the coal mines and drove a coal truck but he was a carpenter by trade, having built the house he lived in along with several others. He was self-employed for 35 years.

Jake was a lifetime member of the Pennington Gap, Va. Fire Department and Lee Co. Rescue Squad, Pennington Gap Unit. He has been a member of the First Baptist Church in Pennington Gap since 1963 where he drove the church bus and was one of the original leaders of the R.A. Boys.

Jake never met a stranger and had a legion of friends. He wanted to say to all his friends and loved ones, I have run a good race and fought a good fight but now I have gone home to be with Jesus. Please follow me, please come this way, Jesus and I will be waiting for you.

The funeral will be held at 1:00 PM Tuesday in the Sanctuary of the Province Funeral Home in Pennington Gap, Va.

Visitation will be from 11:00 AM until time of the funeral Tuesday.

Burial will follow in the Powell Valley Cemetery in Dryden, Va.

Lorene (Collins) Vanoy of Woodway, VA. was born in Hancock Co. TN. on Tuesday, February 17, 1931 and went to be with her Lord on Saturday, June 5, 2010 at the Wellmont Holston Valley Hospital in Kingsport, TN. at the age of 79 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Louie Vanoy, a son, Cleophas Vanoy, her parents, Eppie and Henry Collins, one sister, Jewell Minor Collins and a brother, Raymond L. Collins, her paternal grandparents, Landon and Rosie Collins and her maternal grandparents, David and Ida Gibson and a step-son, Clyde Vanoy. She lived most of her life in Lee Co. and retired from Heritage Hall in Big Stone Gap, VA. after 25 years of service.

Lorene is survived by 6 daughters, Elizabeth Vanoy of Kingsport, TN., Jane Vanoy of Columbus, OH, Rebecca deGraf and husband Marcel of Dayton, OH, Mona Vanoy Orender of Woodway, VA., Reba Vanoy Lester of Kingsport, TN., and Sandra Vanoy of Woodway, VA., five sons, David Vanoy and wife Joy of Homersville, GA., Daniel Vanoy and wife Mary of Cohutta, GA., Eugene Vanoy of Cleveland, TN., Gerald Vanoy of Jonesville, VA. and Charles Vanoy of Cincinnati, OH.

Lorene is also survived by 14 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren and two brothers, Wayne W. Collins of Jonesville, VA., Johnny C. Collins of Salem, IN., two nieces and two nephews and one step-daughter, Joyce Ann Farley of Portage, IN.

Billy Harold Thomas, a resident of Woodway, Va. was born in Jonesville, Va. on Thursday, July 15, 1943 and departed this life at his home on Tuesday, June 8, 2010 at the age of 66 years. He retired from Powell Valley Electric, Jonesville, Va. after 41 years of service. He lived all his life in Lee Co. and was of the Baptist Faith.

Billy was preceded in death by his parents, Curtis and Mary Steward Thomas and one brother, Don Thomas. He is survived by his wife, Carleen Litton Thomas of the home, one daughter, Viola McArn and husband, Rick of Myrtle Beach, S.C..

Billy is also survived by two grandchildren, Kayla McArn of North Myrtle Beach, S.C. and Austin Russell of High Point, N.C.. He is also survived by one great-grandchild, Joslynn McKinnley of North Myrtle Beach, S.C and special niece, Anissa Salyers of Dryden,Va.

The funeral will be held at 1:00 P.M. Saturday in the Sanctuary of the province funeral home in Pennington Gap, Va. with Rev. Ed Woodard officiating.

Dennis Marcum, 57, of Jonesville, Virginia, passed away Friday (June 11, 2010) at his home.

He had worked as A-l Operator with the Virginia Department of Transportation and also farmed.

He was a member of the Friendship Baptist Church in Jonesville.

He was preceded in death by his father, Chester B. Marcum and brother, Michael B. Marcum. He is survived by:

Pennington Gap, VA Alice F. Adams, age 65 of the Big Hill community passed away Saturday, June 12, 2010 at Lee Regional Medical Center. She was a lifelong resident of Lee County and had worked for 27 years at Carter Hall Nursing Home in Dryden, VA as a dietician. She loved making crafts, paintings, and attending craft shows. She loved her family and her granddaughter, Eva Marie was her joy. She was preceded in death by her mother, Estelle Kilgore Belcher,and father, Howard Belcher, son, James V. Adams, sister, Carol Belcher, brother, Ray Belcher.

Survivors include: Two sons, Keith Adams and wife Brenda, Richard Adams and wife, Teresa both of Big Hill. One granddaughter, Eva Marie Adams of Big Hill. Two sisters; Betty Jo Belcher of Big Hill and Kitty Roberts of Dryden, VA. Sister in-law, Sue Belcher, Montgomery, AL, Two nieces; Karen Maggard, Dryden, VA and Lisa Hughes of Montgomery, AL. Dennis Lee Collins, a resident of Rt.70 Jonesville, Va was born Wednesday March 24, 1948 in Lee County, Va and departed this walk of life to be with the lord on Monday June 14, 2010 at his home at the age of 62. He worked for the town of Jonesville for 39 years and lived in Lee County his entire life and was of the Baptist faith.

Dennis was preceded in death by his Father and Mother, Walter and Cassie Fields Collins. One Daughter, Lawana Sue Collins. Two Brothers, Junior Collins and Terry Lee Collins. He is survived by his wife, Geraldine for 38 years of the home. One son, Jason Lee of the home. Three Brothers, Marvin Collins of Lafayette, Indiana, Douglas Collins of Moreland, Georgia and Wayne Collins of Jonesville, Va. Four Sisters, Jackie Austin of Lafayette, Indiana, Irene Ecklund of Omaha, Nebraska, Phyllis Ann Johnson of Jonesville, Va, Mary Ruth Johnson of Jonson City, Tn and several Nieces and Nephews and many friends and loved ones.

Donald Givens
(April 2, 1938 - June 14, 2010)

Donald Givens, 72, of Lincoln, AL formerly of Rose Hill, died peacefully at his home on Monday, June 14, 2010 and went to be with God.

He was born April 2, 1938 to John & Mary Johnson Givens who along with his three sisters Dora, Billie & Pearl preceded him in death.

Don was saved and joined Van Huss Grove Baptist Church shortly after his marriage to Peggy, where he was a faithful member until his illness.

Don married Margaret Faye (Peggy) Ball on November 30, 1966.

To this union were born three children, Charles Givens, Duffield, VA; Penny Faye Givens & Kimberly Ann Hobbs and husband, Jim of Lincoln.

He is also survived by the four loves of his life his grandchildren, Lee, Seth, Emma and Gavin all of Lincoln, AL.

Also surviving are brothers, Dallas, Arthur & Benny Givens & a host of nieces and nephews

Paul Alvis Parsons a resident of Jonesville, Va., was born in the Crab Orchard Community of Keokee, Va. on Sunday, April 15, 1923 and passed away Thursday, June 24, 2010 at the Lee Regional Medical Center in Pennington Gap, Va. at the age of 87 years. He had lived in Lee County his entire life.

Paul was a retired coal miner and retired from auto sales. He was also a member of the UMWA and of the Baptist Faith. He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Grace Bailey Parsons Galloway and one brother, Fred Parsons.

Paul is survived by his wife, June Wright Parsons of the home, one son, Hershell Parsons and wife, Teresa of Gastonia, N.C., half-sister, Ellen Ruth Goins of Virginia and his special aunt, Ruth Surber of Pennington Gap, Va.

The graveside service will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, June 26, 2010 at Lee Memorial Gardens in Woodway, Va.

Jerry Thomas Doan of Keokee, Va. was born in Harrison Co., Ky. on Friday, January 24, 1947 and passed away at his home on Saturday, July 3, 2010 at the age of 63 years. He was preceded in death By a son, Jerry John Doan, his parents, John Gilbert and Rudy Slade Doan and three sisters.

Jerry has been living in Lee Co. about twenty years. He was a retired welder and owned and operated the Ornamental Iron Works in Florida and Illinois. He was a veteran of the US Army, having served in the Korean War and was of the Lutheran Faith.

Jerry is survived by his wife, Sheila Rutledge Doan, two sons, Jerry Thomas Gilbert Doan and fianc Rebekkah Trigg of Keokee, Va. and John Anthony Doan of Keokee, Va. He is also, survived by one daughter, Olivia Clark Doan Daniels and husband, Wally of Ft. Knox, Ky. and four grandchildren, including his special grandson, Andrew Thomas Doan, the joy of his life.

The family is honoring and carrying out Jerry’s wishes to be cremated.

Lucky Eugene Saylor passed away on July 7, 2010, in Lewes, Delaware.

He was born in Missouri on May 23, 1925, and spent most of his adult life in Rockville, Maryland, where he worked as a drywall contractor.

A lifetime musician, Lucky played with many of the pioneers of Bluegrass through the years.

He professed his faith in Christ at an early age.

He was preceded in death by his father, S. P. Saylor; mother, Martha Hensley Saylor; sisters, Alice Keel Shores, Mary Bell Smith, and Hallie Burnett; brothers Byrd Garrett, Clyde Garrett, and Harvey Garrett; and other half-brothers and sisters.

He is survived by one sister, Myrtle Rouse, of Rose Hill; one sister-in-law, Margaret Garrett; several nieces and nephews; and many friends.

Warren G. Mink, 86, of Ewing, Virginia passed away Friday, July 9 at Claiborne County Hospital in Tazewell, TN.

Warren was retired from Ford Motor Company in Monroe, MI.

He was a member and deacon of Mt. View Missionary Baptist Church.

Mr. Mink was a mason and a member of the Martin Station Mason Lodge.

Warren was also a veteran of World War II.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James Mink and Mary Ball Robinson Mink; an infant son; his wife, Jean Smith Mink and sister, Opal Estep.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, July 11, 2010.

Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Monday, July 12th in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Jim Blevins officiating.

Graveside service will follow the service in the Brooks Cemetery in Ewing.
