Ruby Lee Thompson
(January 29, 1907 - September 27, 2008)

Ruby Lee Thompson, age 101, was born on January 29, 1907 in Rose Hill, Virginia.

She grew up on the family farm as the fourth and youngest daughter of William Payton Thompson and Mary Elizabeth Robinson Thompson. She accepted Christ at the age of 16 and was baptized in Missionary Baptist Church (Dry Branch Hollow), Rose Hill, Virginia. Also, she was a devout member of the First Baptist Church, Harlan Kentucky during the years she resided there.

Ruby Lee attended grade school in the Martin’s Creek are of Rose Hill at the old Bales Chapel School for colored children. Although there were few educational opportunities for her, she was bright and eager to learn, and in 1931 she entered high school at the Christiansburg Industrial Institute, Christiansburg, Virginia. Because finances were limited, she left secondary school early to live in Harlan, KY, where she supported herself by working as a live-in housekeeper and cook for several years.

She was a loyal, concerned, and generous sister and daughter. She always shared her modest earnings with other family members who had few cash assets. She eventually returned to the family farm where she resided with her mother and younger brother. She was creative and wrote poetry, did crochet designs and pieced quilt tops along with the usual farm chores. She lived alone on the farm during her senior years and always delighted in the opportunity to share the 100-year history of the land with the current heirs. But as she progressed in age, she moved into a senior citizens residence where she continued to live independently for a few more years. She was tenderly cared for by the Ridgecrest Nursing Home during the final years of her life.

Ruby Lee departed this life on Saturday (September 27, 2008) at Wellmont Holston Valley Hospital in Kingsport, Tennessee. At the time of her passing, she was the last surviving member of a family of six children, four girls and two boys. In addition to Ruby, they were Minnie Gertrude, Winona Lee, Ora Marie, Edward Glen and Obbie Rex. She was also predeceased by her parents, four nephews, and five nieces. She never married nor had children of her own, but was loved and cherished by many devoted relatives. Those who mourn her passing include one niece, Dr. Betty J. Hopkins of Rochester, NY, and two nephews, David C. Henderson of Rochester, NY and Edward Eugene Barnes of Louisville, KY. A host of grandnieces and grandnephews and many other relatives and friends will also cherish her memory.

Calling hours will be from 12:00 noon to 2:00 p.m. Saturday (October 4, 2008) at Arney-Mullins Funeral Home in Rose Hill, Virginia.

Funeral service will follow at 2:00 p.m. in the funeral home chapel.

Burial will be in the Lee Family Cemetery in Rose Hill, Virginia.

Love generously. Care deeply. Speak kindly. Leave the rest to God.
