(February 4, 1977 - March 11, 2009)

Tia Slusher, 32, of Jonesville, Virginia, and formerly of Harlan, Kentucky, passed away Wednesday (March 11, 2009) at Harlan Appalachian Regional Hospital in Harlan, Kentucky as the result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

She was a member of Faith Baptist Church in Jonesville, Virginia and was employed by Harlan Appalachian Regional Hospital as a nurse.

Surviving are:

Her husband: Bobby Slusher of Jonesville, Virginia

One daughter: Cassidy Slusher of Jonesville, Virginia

Her parents: Johnny and Lemma Downs of Jonesville, Virginia

Sister: Melissa Downs of Somerset, Kentucky

Mother-in-Law: Carolyn Felosi and husband, Ralph of Harlan, Kentucky Father-in-Law: Bob Slusher and wife, Diane of Wallens, Kentucky

David Dean, 65, passed away Thursday, (March 12, 2009) at his residence. He was a lifelong resident of Lee County, a retired Coal Minor, and attended Trinity Tabernacle Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lula Faye Dean; parents, Ewell and Lina Dean; one son, Gary Lewis Dean; two brothers, Eugene, Howard Dean; one sister Dorsie Godsey.

Survivors include:

Two sons: Terry Lewis Dean and wife Paula of Ewing, VA. Timmy Dewayne Dean and fiancée Billie of Ewing, VA.

Three grandchildren: Aaron Hensley, and Lance and Anthony Moore

CLARENCE “JUNIOR” CARROLL, 75, of Jonesville passed away Thursday (March 19, 2009) at the Lee Regional Medical Center in Pennington Gap, Virginia.

A lifelong resident of Lee County, Virginia, he was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Pennington Gap, Virginia. He was a retired carpenter and a veteran of the U.S. Army.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Nell Carroll.

Survivors include:

Elizabeth Ann Fortner, 67, of Rose Hill passed away Thursday, (March 19, 2009) at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport, Tennessee.

She was a lifelong resident of Lee County, Retired Lee County Sheriff’s Deputy, and a member of the Mt. Olivet Christian Church. She was very active in her community and was a pianist at Mt. Olivet Christian Church, and was a member of the Rebekah Lodge of Rose Hill, Virginia.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Mildred Hounshell Garrett.

Survivors include:

Husband: Jessee Fortner of Rose Hill, Virginia

Four step-sons; three step-daughters; and many step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren

Two sisters: Lillian Garrett Bean and husband, Richard of Knoxville, Tennessee and Charlsie Garrett Breeding of Ewing, Virginia

Oscar Leroy Harvel
(July 30, 1942 - April 4, 2009)

Oscar Leroy Harvel, 66, of Alabama, formerly of Lee Co. Virginia, passed away Saturday April 4, 2009 at home.

He was a member of Fleenors Chapel Baptist Church in Jonesville, Va. Oscar retired as a Msgt in the Air Force in 1984. He served a tour of duty in Vietnam. After retiring from the military he served as a police dispatcher for the town of Big Stone Gap VA for many years.

Oscar was the best father, daddy, husband, brother and grandfather. He touched many people’s lives; he was always there to lend a helping hand to anyone, whether it was, taking food to the elderly, doing a garden for someone, listening to his children and grandchildren or sending an inspirational note to someone who was down. He always saw the good in people.

He is preceded in death by his loving wife Nancy J. Harvel (who passed Oct 3, 2008), his parents William and Edna Harvel, sister Peggy James, and his two brothers William Jr. Harvel and Herbert Harvel.

Survivors are his 3 daughters Brenda and Mark Barlowe of Ga., Mary Ann Manchego of Huntsville, al. and Susan and Jerry Fee of Montgomery Al. He has 8 grandchilren Mark, Amber, Bryce, Kari, Tyler, Adam, Alex and Santana; two sisters, Jane Hall and Helen Chandler; four brothers Joe Harvel, Earl Harvel, Pat Harvel and John Harvel.

Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, April 10 at the Arney-Mullins Funeral Home in Jonesville.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 11 at the funeral home chapel with Rev. Ed Woodard officiating.

Avery Presley

Jonesville, VA

Avery Presley went to be with the Lord the 18th day of April, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. at Wellmont Lee Regional Medical Center in Pennington Gap, Virginia after a long illness. He was 86 years of age.

Avery was a lifelong resident of the Flatwoods community, a member of the Flatwoods United Methodist Church and was a lifelong farmer.

Avery was preceded in death by sisters Liza, Hazel, Levada, and Callie and one brother, Verlin.

Avery is survived by:

Wife, Edith Presley, Jonesville, VA

Three daughters and sons-in-law: Rebecca and Bill Sumpter, Jonesville, VA; Lavona and Ed Gray, Lafollette, TN and Brenda and Doug Horne, Knoxville, TN

Wandaline Puckett, 57, of Middlesboro, formerly of Lee County, passed away April, 19 at Appalachian Regional Hospital.

She was of the Pentecostal faith. She was preceded in death by parents, John Campbell and Georgia Rhymer; her husband, Danny Puckett, SR.; sisters, Lucille Hassette and Ester Johnson.

Edna was a lifelong resident of Lee county, attended Lambs Chapel Church, and was a member of the Red Hat Society in Harrogate, TN.

Edna was preceded in death by husband, Grant Langley; daughter, Georgia Langley; and parents, Johnny and Flora Greer.

Maude Lakins Brock, 88, of Rose Hill, Virginia, passed away Thursday (May 14, 2009) at Wellmont Lee Regional Medical Center in Pennington Gap, Virginia.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Pearl Pauley; her husbands, Tommie Lakins, Joe Haley, and John L. Brock; son, Earl Charles Lakins; eleven brothers and sisters; and two great-grandchildren.

Cora was a lifelong resident of Lee County and a member of the Cedar Hill Christian Church.

Cora was preceded in death by her parents, Will and Nettie Fee; five brothers and two sisters.

Mark Hines of Jonesville, Va. was born here in Lee Co. on Friday, May 28, 1962 and passed away unexpectedly at his home on Friday, May 15, 2009 at the age of 46. He was a retired LPN and lived most of his life in Lee Co.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Barbara Gioscio. Mark is survived by his father, Roy Hines of Jonesville, Va. and step-mother, Irene Hall of Kingsport, Tn. His fiance, Elaine of the home. Step-daughter, Christy Wilder of Chesterfield, Va. Step-brother, Kent Osborne of Blackwater, Va., Half brother, Tony Hines of Blackwater, Va. Sister, Kimberly Wichman of Indianapolis, Ind., Step sister, Penny Wallen of Kingsport, Tn. Grandchildren, Corey, Nikki & Joey Wilder all of Chesterfield, Va. and Cadence Lambert of Kyles Ford, Tn. Also, several nieces, nephews and his beloved cat, Rufus.

A funeral service to honor and remember the life of Mark will be held at 8 oclock Thursday, May 21, 2009 in the Sanctuary of the Province Funeral Home in Pennington Gap, Va. with Mark Tabor officiating. Visitation will be from 6 oclock Thursday until time of the funeral. The graveside service will be held at 11 oclock Friday in the Woodward Cemetery in Jonesville, Va. A lifelong resident of Lee County, she was a member of the First Baptist Church of Jonesville, Virginia.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Denis “Sodie” Parkey; her father, Tillman J. Carroll; her mother, Gladys Roberts Collier; two sisters, Bobbie Mathis and Letha Brock; and one niece, Nate Pence.

George I. Matlock, of Rose Hill, VA passed away Tuesday, June 2, 2009 at Holston Valley Medical Center at the age of 86.

George lived in Rose Hill all of his life. He was a retired farmer and a clock & watch repairer. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He was of the Baptist faith & read his Bible daily.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William & Elizabeth Debusk Matlock and brothers, Neal, Noel & Dewey Matlock.

Mary H. Gillis of Jonesville, Virginia, passed away Thursday (June 4, 2009) at the Wellmont Lee Regional Medical Center in Pennington Gap, Virginia at the age of 97 years.

She was a member of the Mulberry Covenant Church, where she taught the adult Sunday School class for many years. She was also a member of the Lee Regional Medical Center auxiliary for 30 years.

Mary was a graduate of Lincoln Memorial University, where she was valedictorian, and earned her Masters degree from the University of Tennessee. She taught in the Hancock County School System and also in St. Petersburg, Florida, where she retired.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John D. Gillis, Sr.; her parents, Joseph and Elizabeth Pendleton Hopkins; two brothers, Shirley and Ezra Hopkins; and one sister, Leona H. Southern.

Surviving are:

One son: John D. Gillis, Jr. of Jonesville, Virginia

Foster child: Terry Gillis of Stover, Missouri

Niece: Elizabeth Yeary and husband, Doyle of Ewing, Virginia

Nephews: Joe Southern and wife, Goldie of Sneedville, Tennessee and Don Southern and wife, Peggy of Atlanta, Georgia
