Mary Hope Lowe

Rose Hill, VA

Mrs. Mary Hope Parkey Lowe, 80, formerly of Rose Hill, Virginia passed away Saturday, September 5, 2009, at the Ridgecrest Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation in Duffield, VA.

A lifelong resident of Lee County, Mrs. Lowe was a faithful member of the Rose Dale Baptist Church. She was a member of the Rose Hill Rebekah Lodge #8, serving for 14 years as secretary. She was also a Past Nobel Grand of the lodge.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James “Jim” Lowe; one daughter, Jean Ann Lowe Maggard; one son, Bobby “Bob” Lowe; and parents, Jess and Grace Hounshell Parkey.

She is survived by seven children:

Bruce Lowe and wife Charlotte of Roanoke, VA, Danny Lowe and wife Sherry of Rose Hill, VA, Kyle “Eddie” Lowe and wife Pam of Gibson Station, VA, Richard Lowe and wife Dee of Montrose, MI, Randy Lowe of Rose Hill, VA, Jason Lowe of Rose Hill, VA, and Janet Austin and husband Jeff of Rose Hill, VA

15 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren

The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, September 8, 2009 at Arney- Mullins Funeral Home in Rose Hill. A Rebekah service will be held at 8:00 p.m. Tuesday with funeral service to follow with Rev. Dennis Jones officiating.

Graveside service will be at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at the R. P. Thomas Cemetery in Rose Hill.

Those wishing to go to the cemetery in procession are asked to meet at the funeral home at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday.

OLIVER LEE, 74, of Rose Hill, Virginia passed away Tuesday, September 08, 2009, at Bristol Regional Medical Center, Bristol, TN.

He was a lifelong resident of Lee County and was a member and deacon of the Pinnacle View Primitive Baptist Church. He served in the US Army at Fort Knox, KY and Neosha, Missouri during the Korean War.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jerry K. and Maude Pittman Lee; two brothers, and five sisters.

He is survived by:

Daughter, Kathi Fawcett and husband John of Elkton, VA

One grandson, Andy Hensley and wife Alesha of Ewing, VA

Robert “Bob” Walker, 52, of Rose Hill, Virginia, passed away Tuesday (September 8, 2009) at the Middlesboro Appalachian Regional Hospital in Middlesboro, Kentucky.

He was a lifelong resident of Lee County, Virginia.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Leo and Elsie Walker; nephews, Johnny and Shannon Walker and infant son of Roma Scott; maternal grandparents, Sampson and Lilly Hensley; and paternal grandparents, George and Bertha Walker.

Morrison Monday, 81, of Tazewell, Tennessee, was born November 30, 1927 and passed away Tuesday, September 8, 2009 at his residence in Tazewell, Tennessee.

He had been a resident of Hancock County most of his life. He was a farmer and a member of the Alanthus Hill Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lila Lowee Monday on July 12, 2009; his parents, Oscar and Mary Monday; and one brother, Arthur (Bud) Monday

Billy “Buster” Wayne Woliver age 66 of Jonesville, Va. was born in Lee County, Va. on Sunday, April 4, 1943 and passed away suddenly on Tuesday, September 8, 2009 in Pennington Gap, Va. He was an equipment operator for Glass Machinery and was of the Christian Faith. He was preceded in death by his infant son Jeffrey Scottie Woliver, his wife Carolyn Gilliam Woliver and his parents Burl and Gladys Haynes Woliver.

James Rocky Johnson age 51 of Jonesville, Va. was born in Lee County, Va. on Saturday, November 16, 1957 and passed away Sunday, September 6, 2009. He worked as a Prison Guard for the Wallens Ridge State Prison System and was a former employee of Russell Lumber Co. for many years.

James was a graduate of Flatwoods High School and served in the National Guard and the U.S. Air Force and he was a member of the McConnell Chapel Church. He was preceded in death by his father Curtis Johnson, paternal grandparents James Hugh Johnson and Dora Fox Johnson and his maternal grandparents Robert L. Hall, Sr. and Ruth Stapleton Hall. He is survived by his mother Billie Sue Hall Johnson of Jonesville, Va., one son William Curtis Johnson of Jonesville, Va., step-daughter Ashton Smith of Jonesville, Va., three aunts Nell Johnson Hammond of Cape Carteret, NC, Verta Johnson of Jonesville, Va. and Alice Hall Noe of Jonesville, Va., one uncle Robert L. T. J. Crumley, 76, was born February 25, 1933 and went to be with the Lord on Sunday, September 13, 2009 at Lee Regional Medical Center in Pennington Gap, Virginia after a brief illness.

He was preceded in death by his father, Lon Crumley; mother, Dollie Crumley; and daughter, Patricia Edds

He lived his whole life in Lee County, was a tobacco farmer and dedicated employee of Laningham Tire Company and was co-owner of West Pennington Tire Company where he retired after 48 years in the tire business. He loved his family, fishing, and tinkering with lawn mowers in his spare time. He enjoyed talking with and helping others with anything they brought for him to work on. He will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.

He is survived by:

Dollie Wilson, 87, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, September 15 at the Claiborne Co. Hospital in Tazewell, TN. She was born in Rose Hill on April 23, 1922 to the late Charles Harrison (Todd) & Mossie Pauley Edds. She was a homemaker and a life long resident of Rose Hill. She was of the Christian faith.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Levi Wilson in 2003; an infant brother, William Charles Edds; son-in-law, Walter Junior Fletcher.

Vida was of the Baptist Faith and was a member of the Locust Grove Baptist Church in Disney, Ky. She was preceded in death by her first husband Willard Clive Holman, second husband Lee Hartsock, one son Jimmy Ray Holman, one daughter Betty Lou King, her parents Henry and Sible (Morelock) Cloud, one brother Vance Cloud and three sisters Evelyn Bryant, Redella Galloway and Eileen Franklin.

Wandaleen B. McNiel
(February 24, 1928 - September 25, 2009)

Wandaleen B. McNiel, 81, of Jonesville, Virginia, passed away Friday (September 25, 2009) after a courageous battle with cancer.

Wandaleen was born in Lee County on February 24, 1928. She was a member of Lone Branch Baptist Church. She attended Radford University and taught school at Beech Grove for two years. She was employed by Powell Valley Electric Company for several years retiring in 1990.

Wandaleen was very involved in her church and community. She served as an officer on various committees in WMU, Lone Branch Baptist Church, and The Care at Powell Valley Electric Company.

She was a great and loving friend to all who knew her. To know her was to love her. She will be missed so much.

Wandaleen was preceded in death by her husband, Hubert C. McNiel; her parents, James C. and Bess M. Burchett; twin sister, Kathleen; infant sister, Roberta; and one brother, Robert.

She is survived by nieces, nephews, cousins, and many, many friends and loved ones.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Sunday at the Arney-Mullins Funeral Home in Jonesville, Virginia.

Funeral services will be conducted at 7:00 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Jerry Murphree officiating.

Graveside services will be conducted at 10:00 a.m. Monday in Lee Memorial Gardens in Woodway, Virginia. Those wishing to attend are asked to meet at the cemetery prior to the time of service.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Lone Branch Baptist Church memorial fund, c/o Debbie Burchett, Route 1 Box 314, Jonesville, VA 24263; the Lee County Rescue Squad; or the charity of your choice.

Sudie A. Ward, age 68, of Stickleyville, VA. went to be with the Lord on Saturday, September 26, 2009. She was born in Blackwater, VA. on Monday, September 30, 1940.

Sudie graduated from Rye Cove High School and had lived in Lee County most of her life. She was of the Pentecostal faith and enjoyed reading the Bible, gardening and cooking. She was preceded in death by her father and mother, Errette and Della Giles.

Sudie is survived by her husband, Bill Ward, Jr. of Stickleyville; two daughters, Sandra Parsons and husband, Bob; Sue Young and husband, Robert all of Stickleyville; two sons, Errette and wife, Paige of Stickleyville; Marty and wife, Kara of Fredericksburg, VA.; four grandchildren, Aaron Young, Shelby Ward, Molly Ward and Ellie Ward; one sister, Willie (Udell) Eagle and husband, Lyle of Gray, TN.; one brother, Forrest Giles and wife, Peggy of Blackwater; an uncle, J.C. Berry of Kettering, Ohio and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

The funeral will be held at 8:00 P.M. Tuesday in the Sanctuary of Province Funeral Home in Pennington Gap.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 P.M.Tuesday evening until time of service.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Wednesday at Wards Family Cemetery in Stickleyville.

Family and friends are asked to meet at 10:00 A.M. to go to the cemetery.

Hazel Ruth Montgomery Yeary Gaddis, of White Pine, Tennessee, born June 13, 1918, went to be with the Lord on September 27, 2009 at Heritage Center Nursing Care after a long illness.

She was of the Christian faith and loved flowers.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Willie and Lilly Montgomery; sisters, Mary Stanley and Sharon Pond; brothers, Marshal, Howard, and Arvel Montgomery; daughter, Beulah Longworth; her husband of 39 years, Thomas Yeary; and her husband of 25 years, Cleo Hal Gaddis.

Jerry Ray Harless of the Woodway Community was born in Lee Co., Va. on Sunday, September 5, 1943 and went to be with his Lord, Sunday, September 27, 2009 at his residence at the age of 66 years. He had lived in Lee County, Va. his entire life.

Jerry worked in construction and was a member of the Woodway Baptist Church for 28 years. He was preceded in death by his parents Bud and Gladys Wilson Harless and three brothers Bobby Harless, Arnold Harless and Jimmy Harless.

Eugene McFarland 60, of Pennington Gap, Va. went to be with the Lord unexpectedly on Monday, September 28, 2009 at the Johnson City Medical Center. He was born in Lee County, Va. on Wednesday, August 10, 1949. He was a graduate of Virginia Tech University and worked as a Department Manager of Leggetts Department Stores and Belks Department Stores for over 30 years covering over four states, and as a manager with Eckerds Drug for a few years in Gastonia, NC. After being gone from Lee County, Va. for over 40 years he returned home in June of 2007 due to illness and resided at Lee Nursing Home for just over 2 years.

He became involved in many church ministries and held the monthly Memorial Services at the nursing home where he developed many lasting and memorable relationships with patients and staff members. He loved life to the fullest, playing golf with friends and family for years. He never met a stranger and was associated with the Optimist Club for Boys and Girls in Gastonia, NC. He was saved by the marvelous grace of his Lord Jesus Christ and shared his testimony often with everyone he could. He was a member of the First Christian Church in Pennington Gap, Va.

He was preceded in death by his father Jessie E. McFarland, grandparents Worley and Ora Moore and William and Sarah McFarland. Eugene is survived by his mother June Moore McFarland of Pennington Gap, Va., three brothers Richard and wife, Sandy of Pennington Gap, Va., David of Pennington Gap, Va. and Ronnie and wife, Barbara of Woodway, Va., two nephews John Edwards and wife, Anna of Tazewell, TN., Ryan McFarland of Bowling Green, Ky. and one niece Telitha Horton and husband, Jeremy of Jonesville, Va., several aunts, uncles and cousins and a large host of friends.

The funeral service will be held at 8:00 PM Friday, October 2, 2009 at the Province Funeral Home Sanctuary in Pennington Gap, Va. with Pastor Josh Osteen officiating.

Glen Robert Davis, age 68 of the Stickleyville community of Lee County, VA answered the call of his Heavenly Father and entered Heavens Gate Wednesday, September 30, 2009. He was a retired coal miner, having worked for Westmoreland Coal Company for over 23 years at Wentz Mines. He was a member of the UMWA Local Union # 1405. He was also a farmer who loved talking and visiting with the people. He attended Wallens Creek Covenant Church. Glen was a loving husband, dad, and grandpa.

He was preceded in death by his father Edgar Davis and mother Emmer Lambert Davis and an infant brother Ballard Davis.

Survivors include: his wife of 42 years, Betty Davis of the home. Daughter, Shelby Deel and husband Doug of Cincinnati, Ohio, sons, Chris Davis, Michael Davis and wife Christina of Stickleyville, VA. 6 Grandchildren, Megan Deel, Melinda Deel, Makayla Deel, Andrew Deel all of Cincinnati, Ohio. William Bill Miles of the Ridgeview Community of Jonesville was born in Lee County on Wednesday, April 21, 1943 and passed away Friday, October 2, 2009 at Lee Regional Medical Center in Pennington Gap at the age of 66 years.

Bill was a resident of Lee County most of his life where he was a retired service station operator. He was of the Methodist faith. He was preceded in death by his parents, Eck and Emma Lee Hall Miles; one brother, Joe Miles; and a sister, Dorothy Seabolt.

Bill is survived by his wife, Beulah Faye Miles of the home; one son, Dwight Dingus and wife, Bethanie of Rye Cove, VA.; five daughters, Teresa Kelly ODonnell and husband, Hugh of St. Paul, VA.; Alma Stout and husband, James of Advance, N.C.; Anita Creech and Allison Miles both of Jonesville; Mary Ann Williams and husband, Nathan of Jonesville; special Grandsons of the home, Brandon David Miles, Tyler W. Clayton was born in Rose Hill, Virginia and has family throughout Lee County, Virginia.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ora Elmer Shupe and Vinia Rhea Shupe; two brothers, Rex William Shupe and Clarence “Pete” Shupe; five sisters, Ruth Eunice Ely, Arizona Goins, Rest Lillian Shupe, Emily Allen and Sarah Elizabeth Johnson.

Ruth Fulton Hobbs, 90, passed away Saturday Morning, October 3, 2009 at Tri State Manor Nursing Home in Harrogate, Tennessee.

She was the daughter of the late Larren and Mary Fulton. She was a lifelong resident of Lee County and a member of the Rose Hill Christian Church.

She was a lifetime educator, having taught over forty years in Lee County Public Schools. She was a dedicate math teacher at Thomas Walker High School.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, S. C. Hobbs.

She is survived by her sister, Sue Fulton Dobson of Dublin, Virginia; several nieces and nephews; two special dedicated caregivers, Peggy Payne and Angie Carmony.

Calling hours will be 2 to 4 p.m. Monday at Arney-Mullins Funeral Home in Rose Hill.

Graveside committal service will be at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, October 6, 2009 at the Crockett-Ely Cemetery in Rose Hill, Virginia with Rev. James Jackson officiating.

Clarence Napier of the Stone Creek Community, Rt. 1, Pennington Gap, VA. was born on Wednesday, February 13, 1926 in Lee County, VA. and passed way Friday October 9, 2009 At the Bristol Regional Medical Center at the age of 83 years.

Clarence was a retired coal miner and was a member of the Admant Baptist Church in Stone Creek. He was a Veteran of the United States Army serving during WW II where his ship was sunk on Christmas Eve, December 24, 1943 and 800 fellow soldiers perished. He was a member of the Miles Masonic Lodge #165 in Pennington Gap. He is preceded in death by his parents Finley and Margaret Farmer Napier; one brother Claude Napier; five sisters, Roxie Pridemore, Carrie Rhea, Delora Cross, Hazel Caldwell and Maxine Daugherty.

Clarence is survived by his wife, Clara Jean Hatfield Napier of the home; one son, Randy Napier and wife, DeeDee of Woodway, VA.; one daughter, Sandy K. Napier Smith of Pennington Gap; three grandchildren, Charles Bodie Napier and wife, Sandi; Christie Napier, and Daina Owens and husband, Jeremy; seven great-grandchildren, Aaron and Megan Poe, Hunter, Tanner, Connor and Chloe Napier and Caylee Owens; one brother, Frank Napier and wife, Jean of Logansville, GA.; several nieces, nephews and many friends.

Funeral services will be held at 8:00 P.M. Monday, October 12, from the Sanctuary of Province Funeral Home with Dr. Kenneth Ellis and Merrick Bordelon officiating.

A military graveside service will be held at 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, October 13, at Lee Memorial Gardens in Woodway. Military rites will be conducted by the local V.F.W.s and the National Guard Honors Team.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers. Visitation for Clarence will be held from 6:00 P.M. Monday evening until time of services.

In lieu of flowers the family request donations be made to the Admant Baptist Church building fund. Jonesville, VA

Kevin Patrick Young, 48, of Jonesville, Virginia passed away Saturday, October 10, 2009 at his residence. He was born in Denver, Colorado, was a member of Jonesville First United Methodist Church where he was a lay speaker and a member of the choir.

He was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Willie Young and Lee Spinden; one uncle, David Young; mother-in-law, Beulah Ray and sister-in-law, Sheila Shell.

He is survived by:

Wife, Judy Ray Young, of the home

Father, Bill Young, Denver, Colorado

Mother, Sylvia Rewis of Rentz, Georgia

Two brothers and sister-in-law, Donald Young and Brenda, Firestone, CO and Bill Young, Georgia

One sister, Kathy Tschample of Georgia

Two grandmothers, Alta Young of Denver, CO and Irene Spinden of Fairbury, NE

One special uncle, Ken Young of Denver, CO

Two special aunts, Cora (Corky) Ballinger of Fairbury, NE and Bonnie Young of Auroro, CO.

Sister-in-law and brother-in-law Karen (Susie) and Jeff Ellison, Jonesville

Brother-in-law, Henry Shell, Jonesville, VA

Niece and husband, Sabrina and Brad Stouffer of Firestone, CO

Nephew, Logan Ellison, Jonesville, VA

Nephew and wife, Walter and Beth Shell, Pennington Gap, VA

Visitation will be 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, October 13, 2009 at Arney-Mullins Funeral Home in Jonesville.

Funeral service will follow at 8:00 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Layne Pennington officiating.

Graveside service and burial will be at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, October 14, 2009 at Millers Chapel Cemetery . Those attending the graveside service are asked to meet at the funeral home at 10:00 a.m. to go to the cemetery in procession.

Arney-Mullins Funeral Home of Jonesville is in charge of the arrangements.
