Shaun Belcher of Jonesville, Va. was born in Pennington Gap, Va. on Monday, December 23, 1968 and passed away at the Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport, TN. at the age of 41 years. He had lived in Lee County, Va. his entire life. Shaun was a member of the Miles Masonic Lodge in Jonesville, Va. and was of the Christian Faith.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Adrian and Grace Cloud Belcher.

Shaun is survived by two brothers, Donnie Cloud and wife, Gloria of Indianapolis, In. and Tim Belcher and wife, Stacey of Pennington Gap, Va., three sisters, Joyce Lawlis and husband, Dillard of Whiteland, In., Carla Crowder of Church Hill, TN. and Ada Cook of Jonesville, Va. and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral service will be held at 8:00 PM Monday, August 16, 2010 at the Province Funeral Home Sanctuary in Pennington Gap, Va. with Paul Davis, Jr. officiating.

Visitation will be from 6:00 PM Monday until the time of the service.

The graveside service will be at 11:00 AM Tuesday, August 17, 2010 at Lee Memorial Gardens in Woodway, Va.

The family and friends are asked to meet at the funeral home at 10:15 AM Tuesday to go to the cemetery.

Lillian Virginia King, 69, of Rose Hill, Virginia passed away Wednesday evening at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport, TN.

She attended Silver Leaf Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, J.D. King; parents, Elbert and Ethel Wilder; and brothers, Clarence and Curtis Wilder.

She is survived by:

One son and daughter-in-law: Darrell and Patricia King of Big Stone Gap, Virginia

One daughter and son-in-law: Lana K. and Roger Davis of Rose Hill, Virginia

Five Grandchildren

Two Step-Grandchildren

Four Great Grandchildren

Two brothers: Burl Wilder and wife, Beulah of Rose Hill, Virginia and R.C. Wilder and wife, Virginia of Norwood, Ohio

Danny Wayne Garrett a resident of the Rawhide Community of Keokee, Va. was born in Norton, Virginia on Wednesday, April 30, 1952 and departed this life on Monday, August 23, 2010 at Heritage Hall in Big Stone Gap, Virginia. He was 58 years old. He lived most of his life in Lee Co. and was a very talented person at many occupations and of the Holiness Faith. He was preceded death by a brother, Michael Garrett and one niece, Drema Garrett.

Danny is survived by his father and mother, Clarence and Wilma Wells Garrett. Four brothers, Kerry Garrett and wife Jennifer of Pennington Gap, Va., Steve Garrett and wife Dorothy, of Keokee, Va., Ronald Garrett and wife Lori of Keokee, Va. and Carter Garrett and wife Marie of Keokee, Va. Two sisters, Shelia Young and husband James of Big Stone Gap, Va. and Sandra Collins and husband Gary of Big Stone Gap, Va. Also, 13 nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be held at 1:00 PM Thursday in the Sanctuary of the Province Funeral Home in Pennington Gap, Va. with Rev. Bobby Wells officiating.

Burial will follow in the Gates Cemetery in Keokee, Va.

Visitation will be from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM Wednesday.

Kenneth P. Ayers, 68, of Ewing, Virginia, passed away Monday, August 23, 2010.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William Robert (Bill) Ayers and Fannie Lynn Eldridge Ayers and one sister, Jane Bledsoe.

Gracie Marie Cooper, a resident of the Right Hand Poor Valley Community, Rt. 1 Pennington Gap, Va. was also born in Right Hand Poor Valley on Saturday April 12, 1947 and departed this walk of life on Tuesday August 24, 2010 at the Lee Regional Medical Center in Pennington Gap, Va at the age of 63.

Gracie Marie had been a Seamstress and had lived in Lee County her entire life and was a member of the Pentecostal Church of God in Pucketts Creek. She is preceded in death by one daughter, Crystal Cooper. Her parents, Clarence and Myrtle Gibson and one granddaughter, Peyton Harris. She is survived by one son, Bobby Lynn Cooper of Jonesville, Va. Four daughters, Elizabeth Ann Johnson of Pennington Gap, Va, Kista Renee Freeman of Wise, VA., Gwendolyn Denise Cooper of Pennington Gap, Va and Trayce Lynn Cooper of Dryden, Va. Nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Two brothers, Clarence Howard Gibson of Pennington Gap, Va and Richard Gibson of Big Stone Gap, Va. One sister, Patricia Gibson of Pennington Gap, Va and several nieces and nephews.

Gracie Marie will be very sadly missed by family and friends.

Funeral services for Gracie will be held at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, August 28, 2010 in the Province Funeral Home Sanctuary in Pennington Gap, Va. with Rev. Jim Ewing officiating.

Burial will follow at the Powell Valley Cemetery in Dryden, Va. Family members will serve as pallbearers.

Alvis Hatfield, 88, of LaFollette, Tennessee, passed away Thursday (August 26, 2010) at St. Mary’s Medical Center in LaFollette, Tennessee. He was a retired tool and die worker in Detroit, Michigan. He was a member of the Church of God of Cleveland, Tennessee.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Bonnie Hatfield; his parents, Tom and Lizzie Hatfield; and one brother, Gillis Hatfield.

Surviving are:

Mrs. Thelma Annette Yother, age 53, of Resaca, GA, passed away on Friday, August 27, 2010 at the residence. She was a member of the Sugar Valley Baptist Church.

Thelma was preceded in death by her parents, Robert Ray Ely and Hattie Bernice Ely.

Survivors include her husband, Chris Wayne Yother of Resaca, GA; son, Jeremy Wayne Yother of Resaca, GA; daughters and sons-in-law, Christy and Shawn Mullinax of Chatsworth, Brittianey and Chris Patterson of Manhattan, KS; grandchildren, Madison and Garrett Mullinax; brother and sister-in-law, Rev. Thomas and Irene Ely of Pennington Gap, VA; sister and brother-in-law, Lois and Allen Higdon of Conasauga, TN; aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins also survive.

Funeral services will be 3:00 P.M. Sunday, August 29, 2010 at Sugar Valley Baptist Church with the Rev. Mitch Phillips and the Rev. Lee Ingram officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

Dryden, VA George Crabtree, age 63 passed away on Friday, August 27, at Lee Regional Medical Center. He was a lifelong resident of Lee County, the son of the late J. E. and Kate Bledsoe Crabtree. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Leta Faye and Linda Kay Crabtree.

Survivors include; One sister Dorothy Whitt, Chilhowie,VA, six brothers; Leonard Crabtree, Pennington Gap, VA, Ken Crabtree, Jonesville, VA, Danny Crabtree, Jenkinsburg, GA, Frank Crabtree, Pennington Gap, Larry Crabtree, Dryden, VA, Ed Crabtree, Jonesville, VA. 13 nieces and nephews and other family members.

Mary LeMarr Davis
(June 11, 1919 - August 30, 2010)

Mary LeMarr Davis passed away Monday (August 30, 2010) at the Middlesboro Appalachian Regional Hospital in Middlesboro, Kentucky.

Mary was a very loving and sweet wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She enjoyed gardening, her family, and her church. Her long life was spent caring for others and we will all miss her very much.

She was preceded in death by her parents, J.P. and Hassie LeMarr; one brother, Roy LeMarr; and one sister, Hazel Fee.

Surviving are:

Her husband of 70 years: Paul Davis of Rose Hill, Virginia

One son: James L. Davis and wife, Carolyn of Rose Hill, Virginia

Vern Scott of the Monarch Community in St. Charles, Va. was born in the Rock Lick Community on Saturday, July 19, 1924 and passed away Thursday, September 2, 2010 at the Heritage Hall Nursing Home in Big Stone Gap, Va. at the age of 86 years. She had lived in Lee County, Va. her entire life.

Vern was a homemaker, a member of the Pocahontas Lodge, Morning Star Council #5 of St. Charles, Va. and a member of the Beacon Light Baptist Church in Monarch. She was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd Scott and one son, Donald Scott. Six brothers, George, Floyd, Dave, Elmer, Theodore and Buford Thomas. Four sisters, Ketsia Sage, Elsie Reynolds, Hafford Willis and Margaret Bell.

Vern is survived by her children, Becky Scott Hale and husband, Richard of Indianapolis, In., Fay Scott Mayes of Monarch and Kenneth Scott and wife, Beverly of Kingsport, TN., special granddaughter, Kelle Newman and husband, Chris of Jonesville, Va. and grandchildren, Chris, Patrick, Hope, Rich, Rachel, April, Brock, Matt, Amanda and Ashley, Lance, Devin, Daniel, McKenzie, Amber, Mason, Whitney, Rhylee, Madison and Lucas, one sister Bonnie Bartley of Indianapolis, In. Jonesville, VA

Gaither Graham Jerrell, 84, of the Flatwoods Community of Jonesville, Virginia passed away Friday (September 3, 2010) at Lee Regional Medical Center in Pennington Gap, Virginia.

Gaither was a lifetime member of the Flatwoods United Methodist Church, a member of the United Methodist Women, and a member of the Flatwoods Ruritan Club. Gaither taught school at the Flatwoods Elementary School and retired from the Lee County School System.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ulyss Jerrell; parents French and Nannie Barber Graham and an infant brother, Rex.

She is survived by:

Son, Bernard (Bernie) Jerrell and wife, Judy, of Jonesville, Virginia

Two sisters, Manerva Watson and Geneva Willis both of Jonesville, Virginia

Three nieces, Mickey Cluseman, Charlotte Brooks and Nancy Britton all of Jonesville, Virginia

One Nephew, Mike Willis of Jonesville, Virginia

Alice Luella Wells, died April 18, 2010 in Woodbridge, Virginia.

Alice was born Alice L. Weaver in Harlingen, Texas on October 31, 1929. She met her husband, Willard “Bond” Wells of Jonesville, Virginia during World War II in Brownsville, Texas. They were married in 1948 in Denver, Colorado. During their marriage they lived in Kansas City, Denver, Livingston, Texas, Merrillville, Indiana and Woodbridge, Virginia. Bond pre-deceased Alice in 2008 and is buried in the Hyden Cemetery 4 miles east of Jonesville on Route 58.

Alice is survived by her sisters, Betty and Vera, children; Deborah Kay Hardy and Willard Bond Wells Jr., grandchildren; Charles Bond Roberts, Cara Marie Wells and Willard Bond Wells, III, and great-grandchildren, Cameron Roberts and Emma Wells.

Graveside memorial and service to be held at Hyden Cemetery 4 miles east of Jonesville on Route 58 on Wednesday September 8th at 10 am. with Gary Perdue officiating.

Hazel Russell, age 92, of New Jersey for the past six years and formerly of Jonesville, Virginia passed away Saturday (September 4, 2010) in New Jersey.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Hascue D. Russell; her parents, Art and Susie Terry Robbins; and seven siblings, Eula Speck, Mary Bledsoe, Ruby Eagle, Edna Williams, Ralph Robbins, Ford Robbins, and Houston Robbins.

He had been a resident of Lee County, Va. most of his life. Curtis was a retired coal miner a member of the UMW of A and a member of Church of God in Big Stone Gap, Va. He was preceded in death by his wife, Bessie Allen, one daughter, Ophelia Bailey, parents, Claude and Ellen Allen, brothers, Ernest, Ray and Preston Allen and sisters, Laura Stevens, Pansey Woods, Willie Mae Cox and Joyce Lewis.

Curtis is survived by three sons, Steve Allen of Woodway, Va., Lannie Allen of San Antonio, TX. and Claude Wayne Allen of Tampa, Fl., one daughter, Sheila Martin of Dryden, Va. and twelve grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.

Walter Buck Moore of the Right Hand Poor Valley Community in Pennington Gap, Va. was born in Lee County, Va. on Tuesday, November 7, 1933 and passed away at the Lee Regional Medical Center in Pennington Gap, Va. on Friday, September 10, 2010 at the age of 76 years. He had been a resident of Lee County most of his life.

Buck retired as a carpenter and was of the Baptist Belief. He was preceded in death by an infant son, Richard Anthony Moore, his parents, Elmer and Freesia Cooper Moore and two brothers, Wayne Keith and JC Moore.

Buck is survived by his wife, Ruby Gibson Moore of the home, one son, Donnie Moe Moore of Jonesville, Va., two daughters, Belinda Hensley of Jonesville, Va. and Cindy Moore Tritt of Pennington Gap, Va., eight grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren, two brothers, Bill Moore of Monrovia, In. and Colin Moore of Ben Hur, Va., six sisters, Azalene Ridings of Pennington Gap, Va., Barbara Sue Ridings of Dryden, Va., Alice Faye Whited of Pennington Gap, Va., Alta Akers of Chesapeake, Va., Brenda Ewing of Pennington Gap, Va. and Regina Robbins of Woodway, Va. and several nieces and nephews.

Daisy Cawood Tabor, 97, of Rose Hill, Virginia and formerly of Harlan, Kentucky, passed away Sunday (September 12, 2010) at the Middlesboro Appalachian Regional Hospital in Middlesboro, Kentucky.

She was a member of Friendship Baptist Church of Ewing, Virginia and the Club of the Family of God.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Green Berry Cawood and Cora Roop Cawood; two brothers, James A. Cawood and Herbert C. Cawood; and one sister, Ethel Cawood.

Surviving are:

One son: James George Orris Tabor, Jr. of Middlesboro, Kentucky

Three grandchildren: Ashley Tabor, Kathy Adkins, and Tammie Bolden

Three great-grandchildren

Larry Woliver of Flanary Bridge Rd. in the the Flatwoods Community, Jonesville, Va. was born in Lee County, Virginia on Thursday, July 22, 1944 and passed away Saturday, September 11, 2010 at his home at the age of 66 years. He had lived in Lee County most of his life.

Larry retired as a superintendent of highway construction and a coal mine equipment operator, he was a Veteran of the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War and he attended the Victory Freewill Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Chuck and Virginia Miles Woliver and one grandson, Steven Rutledge.

Larry is survived by his wife, Margarete Woliver of the home, four sons, Stephan Woliver and wife, Jennifer of Belmont, NC, Chad Woliver and wife, Angel of Stow, Oh., Brian Woliver and wife, Melissa of Dryden, Va. and Gary Vaughan and wife, Sandy of Jonesville, Va., one daughter, Melody Cress of Jonesville, Va., ten grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Larry is also survived by four brothers, Loren, Johnny, Quintin and Bruce Woliver, and five sisters, Carolyn Asbury, Donna Werner, Pat Morrison, Martha Willis, Sheila Neff and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral service will be held at 8:00 PM Tuesday, September 14, 2010 at the Province Funeral Home Sanctuary in Pennington Gap, Va. with Rev. Bill Moore officiating.

Visitation will be from 6:00 PM Tuesday until the time of ther service.

The graveside service will be at 11:00 AM Wednesday at Lee Memorial Gardens in Woodway, Va.

Janice Hall Burgin, a resident of Pennington Gap, Va. was born in Harlan, Ky. on Saturday, April 21, 1945 and passed away Saturday, September 11, 2010 in the arms of her son, David, at his home at the age of 65 years. She had been a lifelong resident of Lee County, Va.

Jan live for God and by his will as a member of Victory Freewill Baptist Church where she served as the piano player. A Christian since childhood, she was a devoted mother to her only child, David Woodard, his wife Kayla, and a perfect grandmother to Aliah Rhea Woodard. Her prayers was that Aliah be an Honor Vessel to the Lord. She was preceded in death by her parents, Burly & Sudie Hall. Four Siblinigs, Alta Mae Abner, Jean Blanken, Ethel Ridings and Robert Bob Hall.

Janice also left another great love behind, a minature registered poodle named Lucky Creation of Christ Woodard. He had lived with her since birth. She is also survived by two brothers, Howard Hall & wife, Myrna of Dryden, Va., Ronnie Hall & wife, Pam of Richmond, Va., also, two sisters, Christine Edens of Dryden, Va. Ann Hall Gilbert & husband, Bob of Richmond, Va. and several nieces and nephews.

Hundreds knew Jan by the store she owned in Woodway for 17 years with her ex-husband, Pete Woodard (Petes Grocery) and 4 more years as Jans Grocery. She later worked as a Home Health Care worker caring for the elderly. Jan was loved and adored by everyone that knew her, by her family, her church family, her in-laws, friends, store customers, and neighbors alike. She dedicated her life trying to make others happy and by senior citizen homes among other places.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Wednesday in the Sanctuary of the Province Funeral Home in Pennington Gap, Va. with Rev. Ray Robbins officiating.

Visitation will be from 12 noon Wednesday until time of the service.

Burial will follow at the Ingle Cemetery on Rt. 58 in Rose Hill, Va.

Everette Glen Gilbert

Glen Gilbert, 91, Stickleyville, VA, passed away peacefully Tuesday September 14, 2010 at home surrounded by his family after a brief illness. He was born in the Wallens Creek community on 1/13/1919 to Cam and Ressie Gilbert.

He is an army veteran of World War II and a retired farmer. Glen loved the outdoors, horses, dogs and antiques. He loved whittling and made gifts for his many friends and family members. He was Wallens Creek’s unofficial historian, story teller and a mischievous prankster who never missed an opportunity to play a practical joke on one of his friends. He loved holding court in his breezeway. Glen was a devoted Christian and a member of Wallens Creek Covenant Church.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 64 years, Zelda Bledsoe Gilbert. Their home was a center of activity, where family and friends always felt welcome for a meal and a cup of coffee. After a meal Glen would always ask if you wanted some cherry pie, and then tell you he didn’t have any.

He was also preceded in death by his parents Cam and Ressie Gilbert; brother Vestal and sisters Zelma Gilbert and Hattie Helbert; infant son Dennis Gilbert and great-grandson Jake Anderson.

Glen is survived by one son Kenneth Gilbert and wife Peggy of Powell, TN; two daughters Glenda Anderson and husband Bob of Oakdale, MN and Ruth Ann McElroy and husband Danny of Stickleyville, VA; foster sons Gerald Jessee and wife Michele of Jonesville, VA and Joe Wyatt and wife Dorena of Dryden, VA.; grandchildren, Rick (Lori) Anderson, Kurt (Barb) Anderson, Julie Anderson Riley, Mark (Jill) Gilbert, Brent (Rachel) Gilbert, and Jennifer McElroy; foster grandchildren, Morgan and Cameron Jessee; Melissa, Christopher, Ashley and Carrie Wyatt; great-grandchildren, Jayna and Nicholas Anderson; Karli and Zeldie Anderson; Hunter, Braeden and Sidney Riley, Preston, Jack and Lucy Gilbert, and Zelda, Max and Theodore Gilbert. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews and close friends.

The family will receive friends Friday, Sept. 17, 2010 at 5:00-8:00 PM at Sturgill Funeral Home, Pennington Gap, VA. Joseph C. (Joe) Poteet, age 61, passed away Tuesday (September 14, 2010) at his home in the York Community of Jonesville, Virginia.

He was of the Baptist faith and had attended Pond View Church. He worked for a mobile home dealer in Kingsport, Tennessee for many years and was a former employee of the Town of Jonesville prior to his death.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert W. Poteet and Lou Marcum Poteet and one sister, Mildred Poteet Willis.

Surviving are:

Two sisters: Mary Ruth Williams of Jonesville, Virginia and Wilma Janette Easterly of Kingsport, Tennessee

One daughter: Rochelle Roberts of Wise, Virginia

Randy Steven Pridemore, 53, died on Sun, September 19 unexpectedly.

He was born Aug 16, 1957 in Ewing, VA. Randy retired from LFUCG Division of Corrections after 19 years of dedicated service. Prior to pursuing his career in law enforcement, he attended Eastern Kentucky University and was a member of the ROTC. After retiring from Law Enforcement, he operated his own home improvement business.

Randy was an avid runner and participated in several marathons. He also enjoyed hiking and camping with his son, Jacob.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Jeanette and dear son, Jacob. Also surviving are his mother and step-father, Leona and Walter Brock, Ewing, VA; a brother, Michael Pridemore (Linda) and their three children, Bristol, TN; a sister-in-law, Pam (Gregg) Loope and their four children, Lexington; a mother-in-law, Karen Squires, MN; a father-in-law, Larry (Terry) Walsh, Greensburg, KY; and many other family and friends.

Johnnie Clyde Overton Chambers, Devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and friend, departed this life to be with her Savior Wednesday, September 22, 2010.

Johnnie was born Friday, June 6, 1913 to the late, Emma and Tipton Overton of Hancock County, TN. She was predeceased by her husband, Willard Chambers, parents, Tipton and Emma Snodgrass Overton and five sisters. She was a member of Friendship Baptist Church for over sixty years where she was very active in the WMU.

Johnnie also taught Sunday School and VBS for many years in her beloved church. She leaves to cherish her memory three daughters, Judith Trapp (Harold) of Oak Ridge, TN, Sylvia Pouncy of Bessemer, Al. and Sharon (Paul) Burton of Hampton, Va., her son, Gary and special daughter-in-law, Marsha Chambers of Jonesville, Va., grandchildren, Robin Bielich, Traci Larwence, John Pouncy, Alison Jansen, Bert Burton and Justin Chambers. She is also survived by eleven great grandchildren along with numerous nieces and nephews.

A celebration of her life will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, September 25, 2010 at Friendship Baptist Church with Rev. Fred Cagle officiating.

Visitation will preceded the service at 1:00 at the church.

Internment will follow on her beloved farm near the Ewing-Chambers Cemetery in front of the Friendship Church.

Two sisters: Mary Jo Smith of Pennington Gap, Virginia and Mabel Edwards of Rogersville, Tennessee

The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday at the Arney-Mullins Funeral Home in Jonesville, Virginia.

Funeral services will follow in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Don Jones officiating.

Graveside services will be conducted at 10:00 a.m. Saturday in Lee Memorial Gardens in Woodway, Virginia.

Those wishing to attend are asked to meet at the cemetery prior to services.

Fred Garrett
(July 21, 1927 - September 29, 2010)

Fred Garrett, 83, of Jonesville, Virginia, passed away Wednesday (September 29, 2010) at the Wellmont Lee Regional Medical Center in Pennington Gap, Virginia.

A resident of Lee County, Virginia for most of his life, he was a member of Plain View Baptist Church in Jonesville, Virginia. Fred was a farmer and Co-Owner of Pennington Auto Sales, Inc. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy.

He was an avid hunter, fisherman, and farmer. He helped start the softball league in Jonesville in 1970.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Louisa Garrett; his dad, Harrison Garrett; step-mother, Eunia S. Garrett; four sisters, Mildred G. Fee, Daisey Terry, May G. Lowe, and Mable Garrett; and one brother, Lawrence Garrett.

Surviving are:

Wife: Juanita H. Garrett of Jonesville, Virginia

One son: Steve Garrett and wife, Debbie of Jonesville, Virginia

Three daughters: Sue G. Watson and husband, Larry of Maryville, Tennessee; Nancy G. Marsee of Jonesville, Virginia; and Lisa Gerald and husband, Larry of Christiansburg, Virginia

Seven grandchildren

Nine great grandchildren

One brother: Frankie Garrett of Jonesville, Virginia

Two sisters: Hazel G. Roop of Jonesville, Virginia Billie Sue Hyder of Jonesville, Virginia

The family will receive from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Saturday at the Jonesville First Baptist Church.

Funeral services will follow at 7:00 p.m. with the Rev. Mike Humfleet and the Rev. Carlos Wolfe officiating.

Military graveside services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Sunday in Lee Memorial Gardens in Woodway, Virginia with military rites by the VFW posts of Big Stone Gap, Norton, and Coeburn along with the Virginia National Guard Honors Team.

Those wishing to attend are asked to meet at the cemetery prior to services.
