Hazel M. Hensley Harber of Jonesville, Va. and formerly of Rose Hill, Va. was born in Lee County, Va. on Tuesday, October 11, 1932 and passed away Sunday, January 1, 2012 in Pennington Gap, Va. at the age of 79 years.

Hazel retired as a Cafeteria Employee at the Elydale School and was a member of the Corner Stone Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents P. Hensley and Massie Hensley, two brothers Burgess M. Hensley and Burt Hensley, Sr. and one infant sister.

Hazel is survived by one sister-in-law, Celesta Hensley of Hubbard Springs, Va., one niece, Betty Grable of Jonesville, Va., two nephews, Burt Hensley, Jr. and Jackie Hensley and wife, Terry all of Hubbard Springs, Va., one great-niece, Amanda Muncy and husband, Kevin of Jonesville, Va. and one great-great-nephew, Jackson Dennis Muncy of Jonesville, Va.

Visitation will be from 12:00 noon Friday until the time of the service.

The funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM Friday, January 6, 2012 at the Province Funeral Home Sanctuary in Jonesville, Va. with Rev. Brian Gunter officiating.

Burial will follow at the Clifton Cemetery in the Hagan Community.

Richard Allen Ryan of Jonesville, Va. and formerly of Indiana was born Richmond, In. on Thursday, August 6, 1959 and passed away Sunday, January 1, 2012 at the Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport, TN at the age of 52 years. He had lived 48 years in Indiana and retired from Natural Beauty Greenhouse as a nursery foreman where he loved raising roses.

Richard was also a member of the Fleenors Chapel Missionary Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his father, Roy Dale Ryan, grandparents, Elmer and Elsie Ryan and Viola Bolinger and Erwin Bolinger.

Richard is survived by his mother, Ruby L. Livesay of Jonesville, Va., a special friend William Crider, Jr. of Rose Hill, Va. and several aunts and uncles.

The funeral service will be at 8:00 PM Wednesday, January 4, 2012 at the Province Funeral Home Sanctuary in Jonesville, Va. with Bud Eldridge and Rev. Aaron Stapleton officiating.

Visitation will be from 6:00 PM Wednesday until the time of the service.

The graveside service will be at 11:00 AM Thursday, January 5, 2012 at the Wilder Cemetery in the Steep Rock Community of Jonesville, Va.

Alanzo Patton Pat LaForce, 67, died Sunday, January 1, 2012 at Holston Valley Medical Center after a courageous battle with cancer. He was a resident of Lee County, Va. most of his life. For many years he operated a custodial and handyman service in the area but his true love was farming including raising tobacco and cattle. Most recently he was known for selling his farm raised produce throughout the Jonesville area. He also loved to golf and was a proud member of the Preston Masonic Lodge No. 47. He was also a member of the Friendship Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, Elijah and Mary Eppie LaForce; brothers, Johnny LaForce, Boyd Bowen, Earl LaForce, Tavis LaForce, sister, Barbara LaForce Murray, and two infant siblings.

Surviving are: Daughters: Patty Sumpter, and husband, Allan of Jonesville; Michelle Gray and husband, David of Elizabethton, TN; and Kim Slover and husband, Dan of Madison, Ohio. Grandchildren: a very special grandson, Patrick Sumpter and his fiancé, Christus, Kaitlyn Sumpter, Sarah Sumpter, Micah Gray, and Garren Gray. Great-Grandchildren: Emma Sumpter and DeLaney Glass. Brothers and sisters: Mrs. Jean Scott, Mr. Dan LaForce, Ms. Sue Baker, Mrs. Ruth Zimmerman and husband, Mel, Mr. Jack LaForce and wife, Judy, Mr. Larry LaForce and wife, Judy, Mr. Paul LaForce, and Mr. Kip LaForce and wife, Sue. Several nephews and nieces that he loved as much as his own children. Also surviving is his fiance, Ms. Sandra Wade of Jonesville and her daughter, Amy Goodman and husband, Rick and their children Breanna and Kaylee who referred to him as Pepaw.

Services will be held at Friendship Baptist Church, Jonesville on Thursday, January 5th, at 8:00 PM with Rev. Fred Cagle and Rev. Dempsie Mullins officiating.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 PM at the church.

Burial will be in the family cemetery on Flatwoods Road on Friday, January 6th at 11:00 AM.

Those who wish to attend are asked to meet at the cemetery at 10:45 AM Friday.

James Pettey
(December 31, 1922 - January 2, 2012)

Dryden, VA James Robert Pettey was born on December 31, 1922 in Alexandria, VA and departed this life on January 2, 2012 at his home in Dryden, VA.

James, affectionately known as Jack to his friends and family, was a loving father, grandfather, great grand father, great-great grandfather and brother. He was a long-time member of the Catholic Church. He fought in WWII and the Korean War and retired from the Navy in 1980 as a Master Chief Petty Officer after spending 37 years of dedicated service to his country. He also retired in 1980 after many years of service in the Research Equipment Development Department of the Walter Reed Army Medical Center.

James was preceded in death by his loving wife of 62 years, June Griggs Pettey, his father, Charles Ernest Pettey, his mother, Hallie Augusta Johnson Pettey, one infant son, James Robert Pettey, Jr., one daughter, Rita Michelle Pettey, 3 sisters, Charlotte Evelyn Yowell, Hallie Margaret Pettey, and Frances Mildred Dixon, 2 brothers, Charles Gorman Pettey and William Edward Pettey. Those who will miss him dearly are his daughter and son in law, Drucilla and Ron Witt of Fredericksburg, VA; 2 sons and daughters- in law, Michael and Marnie Pettey of Dryden, VA and Charles and Carolyn Pettey of Pennington Gap, VA; 2 sisters, Mary Jean Jack of Silver Spring, MD, and Barbara and Jack Aitcheson of Alexandria, VA; 11 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren, 3 great great grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, and extended family and friends.

The family will celebrate James' life on Wednesday, January 4 at the Sturgill Funeral Home from 5 until 7:00 p.m.

Memorial service will be at 7:00 p. m. with Father Tim Drake officiating. His earthly body will be laid to rest beside his dear wife in the Powell Valley Cemetery in Dryden, VA at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 5.

Reba Glass Sadler, 82, of Jonesville, Virginia, passed away Monday (January 2, 2012) at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport, Tennessee.

A lifelong resident of Lee County, Virginia, she was a member of Millers Chapel United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Cecil G. Sadler; her daughter, Betty Williams; and her parents, Haburn and Milphea Glass.

Surviving are:

Son-in-law: Lowell Williams of Jonesville, Virginia

One grandson: Mori Williams and wife, Terri of Princeton, West Virginia

Two great grandchildren: Landon and Lauren Williams

Three brothers: Everett Glass of Goldsboro, North Carolina; Don Glass of Jonesville, Virginia; and Max Glass of Danville, Virginia

Gale Harris, 71, of Jonesville, Virginia passed away Monday (January 2, 2012) at Johnson City Medical Center in Johnson City, Tennessee.

She had lived in Lee County for the last thirty years. She attended Faith Baptist Church.

She was a retired medical office manager for Dr. Jai K. Varandani.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jimmy Ray Harris and parents, Clyde E. Lacey and Isabelle Vest Lacey.

She is survived by:

2 sisters, Penny Rush of Georgetown, Indiana and Kathy Bentley and husband, Paul, of Rapid City, South Dakota

Two step children, Valarie Davis and Danny Harris both of Dayton, Ohio

Alfred Rhea Edens, 81, of Ben Hur passed away January 3, 2011.

He served in US Marine Corp.

Jimmie Coy Smith of Jonesville, Va. was born in Lee County, Va. on Saturday, April 12, 1930 and passed away Tuesday, January 3, 2012 at the Veterans Hospital in Mountain Home, TN at the age of 81 years.

Jimmie was a Veteran of the U.S. Army during the Korean War and he loved Karoke, Dancing and antiques. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jimmie Smith and Kate Andis and one brother, Harold Andis.

He retired as a brick mason and was a Veteran of the US Army during the Korean War and of the Freewill Baptist belief. He was preceded in death by his parents, Barney William and Virginia Olinger Duff, one son, Darrell Duff and one sister, Delores Duff. Jackie is survived by two daughters, Vivian A. Duff of Brazil, IN and Jackie Lynn Miller and husband, Jessee of Indianapolis, IN, six grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren, one brother, Barney Duff of Keokee, Va. and two sisters, Connie Duff of Keokee, Va. and Freda McClellan of Dayton, OH.

Hampton Hamp Cowan was born in Lee County, Va. on Tuesday, April 22, 1924 and passed away Wednesday, January 4, 2012 at the Heritage Hall Nursing Home in Big Stone Gap, Va. at the age of 87 years.

Hamp was a resident of St. Charles, Va. his entire life. He retired as a coal miner and a mechanic.

Hamp loved collecting guns as a hobby and was of the Baptist Faith. He was preceded in death by his parents, Garfield and Margie Oliver Cowan, one brother, Clinton Cowan and three sisters, Hazel Hester, Bernice Medley and Josie Vaughn.

Hamp is survived by one brother, Charles Grant Cowan of St. Charles, Va. and one sister, Daisy Baldwin of Pennington Gap, Va. and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Cranzy and Leona Wilder Dillman; two brothers in-law, Dale Medina and Junior Britton, One brother, James Dillman. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Barbara Britton Dillman of the home. 5 sons and 2 daughters: James Dillman and wife Michelle of Woodway, VA, Franklin Dillman of Pennington Gap, VA, David Dillman and wife Melissa of Stickleyville, VA. Keith Ewing age 19 of Pennington Gap, Va. was born in Big Stone Gap, Va. on Sunday, September 6, 1992 and passed away Saturday, January 7, 2012 in Pennington Gap, due to a car accident. He was a 2010 graduate of Lee High School, he worked as a cashier in the video department of Food City and was a member of the First Baptist Church in Pennington Gap. He was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Lacy Ewing and Jerry Hatley, Sr.

Keith is survived by his parents, Greg Fonz and Dannette Hatley Ewing of Pennington Gap, Va., special brother, Bub Tyler Ewing of the home, his grandmothers, Doris Hatley of Pennington Gap, Va., Bernetia Ewing of the Big Hill Community, special aunt, Misty Hatley of Dryden, Va., special cousin, Kayla Hatley of Dryden, Va., best friend, C.J. James H. Hensley, 56, of Ewing, Virginia, passed away Thursday (January 12, 2012) at St. Mary’s Hospital in Knoxville, Tennessee.

He attended Arthurs Chapel Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Ohma Hensley; one daughter, Katrina Joelene Hensley; and two brothers, Ernie and Roy Bussell.

Lilly May Ricker of St. Charles, Va. was born in the Stone Creek Community on Friday, March 25, 1921 and went to be with the Lord on Thursday, January 12, 2012 in Surgoinsville, TN. at the age of 90 years. She was a housewife and was a member of the First Baptist Church in St. Charles. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Ricker in 1999. Her parents, Andrew and Addie Harris Napier. Two brothers, Olin Farmer and Steve Napier and one sister, Roxie Farmer. She is survived by five daughters, Addie Jane Fleenor of Pennington Gap, Va., Alma Parsons and husband Walker of Surgoinsville, TN., Sandra Flanary Napier of Pennington Gap, Va., Esther Boyce and husband Thomas of Kingsport, TN. and Claretta Cox of St. Charles, Va. 18 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great grandchildren. Also one sister, Molly Lyttle of Noblesville, IN. and 7 nieces and 4 nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 8:00 P.M. Saturday, January 14, 2012 in the Province Funeral Home Sanctuary in Pennington Gap with Dr. Charles Barrier Officiating.

Visitation will be held from 6:00 P.M. until time of services Saturday.

Graveside services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Sunday, January 15, 2012 at the Pennington Memorial Cemetery on hwy 421 Harlan Road.

Warren Lawson of Duffield, Va. was born on Thursday, February 18, 1965 in Brownsburg, IN. and passed away on Friday, January 6, 2012 at his home at the age of 46 years.

Warren was a Timber worker. He was preceded in death by his father, Albert Lawson. He is survived by his mother, Francis Roach of Jasper, Va. One son, Daniel Hilton of Tennessee and one daughter, Heather Lawson of Tennessee. Also, one brother, Nathan Shane Lawson of Duffield, Va. and lots of friends and relatives.

Phil Hall Gilliam of Stickleyville, Va. was born in Lee County, Va. on Friday, October 8, 1965 and passed away at his home Saturday, January 14, 2012 at the age of 46 years. He was a hard worker, loved the outdoors, hunting and fishing.

Phil was a welder and of the Baptist Faith. He was preceded in death by his father, Guy Gilliam in 1998, his grandparents, Coy and Gertrude Gilliam and Clyde and Cora Belle Hall.

Phil is survived by two sons, Jason Gilliam and Corey Gilliam and adopted son, Adam Gross all of Stickleyville, Va., his fiancé, Denise Carroll of Stickleyville, Va., mother Nell Gilliam of Stickleyville, Va., one sister, Bridgette Dorton and husband, Jackie of Woodway, Va. and three nieces, Courtney Dorton, Holly Dorton and Savannah Dorton and one nephew, Caden Cochran all of Woodway, Va.

A lifelong resident of Lee County, Virginia, she was a member of Sarepta Baptist Church in Blackwater, Virginia.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel O. Robinette; her parents, Odie and Maude McConnell Allen; four brothers, Charlie, Clifford, Ramey, & Roosevelt Allen; and one sister, Hattie Allen Bledsoe.

She was born in Lee County, the daughter of the late John B. and Velira Riddle Napier. She retired as a nurse at the old Lee General Hospital. She was a member of Belcher's Chapel Church. She was preceded in death by sisters, Jennie Moore,and Beatrice Greer, by brothers, George Napier, Joe Napier, and Robert Napier and several neices and nephews. She is survived by her niece and caregiver, Wilma Poteet of Jonesville, VA and other nieces and nephews and her church family. Her extended family on the Cumberland Wing of the Lee Nursing and Rehab Center.

Dryden, VA Tommy Forester, age 69 passed away Monday morning January 30, 2012 in Holston Valley Hospital in Kingsport, TN. He began a long career in the grocery business starting with Piggly Wiggly Store during High School. He then worked for Rainbow Bakery and managed several grocery stores including Cas Walker's and Piggley Wiggly before opening Toms Fruit and Vegetable Market retiring in 2006. He was a member of the Dryden Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce Shepard Forester, his parents, Thomas LeRoy (Dick) Forester and Kathleen Templeton Forester.

Survivors include one daughter, Pam Giles and husband, John, 2 grandchildren, Mandy and Jordan Giles all of Big Stone Gap, VA. 2 sisters, Catherine Fee and husband Jack of Rossville, GA, Carol Carroll of Jonesville, VA. 1 brother, Jeff Forester of Pennington Gap, VA. Daniel Frederick Nugent, 87, of New Tazewell, Tennessee, passed away Sunday (January 29, 2012) at his home. He was preceded in his death by his wife, Ida Mildred Depew Nugent; two daughters, Mary and Leslie Ann; a brother, Robert and two sisters, Dolly and Wanda.

Dan was born in North Tonawanda, New York. He worked as a tradesman as his career including honorable service with the U.S. Army in the European theater during World War II.

Survivors include his two stepsons, Robert Reid of Mims, Florida and Lawrence Reid of Westminster, Maryland, numerous nieces and nephews, and his grandchildren by his daughter, Leslie Ann Leofsky.

Funeral services will be conducted at 8:00 p.m. Tuesday in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Charles H. Long officiating.

Graveside services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday in the Fee Cemetery in Rose Hill, Virginia. Family and friends are asked to meet at the funeral home at 10:00 a.m. to go to the cemetery in procession.

Nephews will serve as pallbearers.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to Arney-Mullins Funeral Home, P.O. Box 98, Rose Hill, VA 24281 to help with funeral expenses.
