Pearl Edgar Clifton, of the Beech Springs Community of Jonesville, Va. was born in the Hubbard Springs Community of Jonesville on Tuesday, March 1, 1921 and went to be with the Lord on Sunday, February 5, 2012 at the Lee Nursing and Rehab in Pennington Gap, Va. at the age of 90 years. He was a crane operator at Armco Steel for 7 years in Middletown, OH., a self-employed carpenter for several years which he enjoyed very much. He worked for Lanningham Oil Co. for 20 Years in maintenance repair and was a retired farmer which he loved to do. He was also a member of the Chances Chapel United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Mary Hensley Clifton. Three brothers, Henry, Berry and Mack Clifton. Two sisters, Margaret Hensley and Bertha Ingle and son-in-law, Dennis Marcum. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Pauline Clifton of the home. Two daughters, Linda Stafford and husband Clarence of Jonesville, Va. and Penny Marcum, also of Jonesville, Va. 6 grandchildren, Lisa Lewis and husband Travis of Chilhowie, Va. Debbie Woliver and husband Mark, Jody Stafford, Tammy Marcum and Jason Marcum and wife Regina all of Jonesville, Va. and Matthew Marcum and wife Mary Helen of Rose Hill, Va. 14 great-grandchildren. One sister, Dealie Click of Bellglade, FL. and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 8:00 P.M. Wednesday, February 8, 2012 in the Province Funeral Home Sanctuary in Jonesville, Va. with Rev. Fred Cagle and Tracy McPherson officiating.

Visitation will be from 6:00 P.M. Wednesday until time of services. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Thursday, February 9, 2012 at Lee Memorial Gardens in Woodway, Va.

Family and friends are asked to meet at the funeral home at 10:00 A.M. Thursday to go to the cemetery. Family will serve as pallbearers. Cherie Shay Nevaeh Calhoun of the Sand Lick Community in St. Charles, Va. was born in Norton, Va. on September 7, 2011 and passed away Saturday, February 4, 2012 at her home at the age of 5 months. She was preceded in death by her grandmother, Barbara Mooneyhan in 1995 and her great-grandmother, Lily Calhoun in 2011.

Cherie is survived by her parents, Raymond Lee Calhoun and Linda Jeanette Mooneyhan of the home, three brothers, Jordan Calhoun, Jeffery Holt, Jacob Calhoun and several cousins.

The funeral service will be held at 8:00 PM Tuesday, February 7, 2012 at the Province Funeral Home Sanctuary in Pennington Gap, Va. with Rev. Bill Hughes officiating.

Visitation will be from 6:00 PM Tuesday until the time of the service.

The graveside service will be at 1:00 PM Wednesday at the Calhoun Cemetery in the Sandlick Community.

Alice W. Roop, 95, of Kingsport, Tennessee and formerly of Jonesville, Virginia, passed away Monday (February 6, 2012) at Asbury Place in Kingsport, Tennessee.

She was born in Jonesville, Virginia, but had made her home in Kingsport for the past 22 years.

She was a member of Bowling Chapel United Methodist Church in Jonesville, Virginia.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Alton T. Roop; her parents, John T. and Media Warner; three brothers, Roe Warner, Bill Warner, and Joe Warner; and one sister, Gaynelle Bowen.

Surviving are:

Her daughter: Helen Chadwell and husband, Gene of Kingsport, Tennessee

Two grandsons: Rick Chadwell of Kingsport, Tennessee and Roger Chadwell and wife, Susan of Kingsport, Tennessee

Two great-grandchildren: J.T. Chadwell of Asheville, North Carolina and Whitney Chadwell of Kingsport, Tennessee

Several nieces and nephews

Dryden, VA Fannie May Sturgill, age 89, passed away Wednesday morning, February 8, 2012 in Holston Valley Hospital in Kingsport. She was born in Duffield, VA, the daughter of the late William H. and Gladys Rasnic Robinette. She was a member of Blue Springs Church in Stickleyville. She was preceded in death by her husband, Chester Sturgill, one son, Richard Earl Sturgill, two sisters, Emma Grills and Elgie Baumgardner, two brothers, L.E.Robinette and Elmer Robinette.

Survivors include, daughters, Emma Jean Haynes and husband, Sam, Dryden, VA, Linda Millsap and husband, Bob , Dryden, VA, Laura Fannon and husband, James of Stickleyville, VA, Joyce Marshall, Morristown, TN, Irene McGinnis, Dryden, VA. Sarah Ann Helen Mullins of the Sugar Run community of Jonesville, Va. was born on Saturday, August 8, 1931 in Roda, Va. in Wise County and passed away on February 11, 2012 at the Wellmont Lonesome Pine Hospital in Big Stone Gap, Va. at the age of 80 years. She was a resident of Lee County her entire life and was a housewife and was of the Pentecostal Faith. She was preceded in death by her husband, Carson Mullins in 1981. One son, Carson Jr. Mullins. Two brothers and two sisters. Also her parents, Henry and Nellie Bennett Holcomb.

Sarah is survived by two sons, Thomas Raymond Mullins and wife, Georgette of the Sugar Run community of Jonesville, Va. and David Mullins and wife, Vicky of Winterville, NC. Belle Brown Shoemaker, 94, of the Hickory Flats community of Pennington Gap, VA went to be with the Lord on Monday, February 13, 2012. She was born in Hickory Flats, the daughter of the late Corbett and Grace Myers Brown. She received her Bachelor of Science degree from Union College and retired from the Lee County School System after 27 years of teaching. She was a member of the Mt. Carmel Baptist Church in Woodway, VA. She was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Frank Shoemaker, and two sisters, Oza Melzoni and Faye Myers. She is survived by her four children, James F. Shoemaker and wife Jane of Collinsville, VA, Corbett Shoemaker and wife Brenda of Surfside Beach, SC, Grace Mooney and husband Michael of Pennington Gap and David Shoemaker and wife Judy of Kingsport,TN. 12 grandchildren, 30 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

William Clyde Brown, age 87, passed away on Tuesday, February 14, 2012 at Lee Nursing and Rehab Center. He was born in St. Charles, VA, son of the late William Bradley and Susie Garrett Brown. He was a WWII Veteran, served in the US Army. He was a retired coal miner, and a member of UMWA District 28. He was a member of the Pennington Gap Baptist Church for over 80 years. He was preceded in death by his wife Ruth Pauline Brown, two sisters, Georgia Grace and Ruby Dixon and brother, Elmer Brown. Survivors: One daughter, Joyce Mack and husband Steve of Dryden, VA. Grandchildren: Doug Gilliam, Danville, IN, Buddy Gilliam and wife Sissy of Big Stone Gap, VA, Willie Gilliam and wife Tiffany of Dryden, VA, on step- granddaughter, Steffanie Sala and husband Gary of Mountain City, TN, twelve great grandchildren, one sister, Pauline Payne of Texas.

Pennington Gap,VA

Claude B. Ely, age 94, passed away on Tuesday, February 14, 2012 in Lee Regional Medical Center. He was born on June 10, 1917 in the Robbins Chapel area of Lee County. He was the son of the late Marion and Maggie Hobbs Ely.

Mr. Ely served in the U.S. Conservation Corp prior to serving in the U.S. Navy during WWII.

Mr. Ely worked as a merchant and auto dealer for a number of years before serving and retiring as Deputy Treasurer of Lee County. Mr. Ely served on the Town Council of Pennington Gap and as Mayor for several years. He was an active member of The First United Methodist Church of Pennington. He has also been a member of the Local Masonic Lodge for over 60 years. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lorene Johnston Ely, also by 4 brothers and 2 sisters.

Survivors include:One daughter, Joyce Hobbs and husband, David of Westchester, OH: One son, John Paul Ely and wife, Elizabeth of Franklin, TN. 4 grandchildren,3 great grandchildren. One sister, Lois West, Norwood OH. Several neices and nephews.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, February 18, at The First United Methodist Church in Pennington Gap from 1:00 until 2:00 p.m. with funeral services following with Rev. Roger Mathess and Rev. Clifford Ely officiating.

Lee Cloud of the Big Hill Community in Pennington Gap, Va. was born in Keokee, Va. on Monday, March 14, 1932 and passed away Wednesday, February 15, 2012 at his home on Big Hill at the age of 79 years. He was a retired farmer and loved to farm and especially loved to coon hunt.

Lee was also of the Pentecostal Faith. He was preceded in death by his parents George Washington and Jona Wynn Cloud, seven brothers and four sisters.

Lee is survived by his wife of 56 years, Nona Cloud of the home, one son, Michael Cloud of St. Joseph, Mo., five daughters, Sharon Driggers of St. Josephs, Mo., Linda Thompson and husband, Ronald of Indianapolis, In., Bonnie Skidmore and husband, William of Jonesville, Va. and Charlotte Grace, husband, Jerry of Union Star, Mo. and Jona Danberry and husband, Terry of Pennington Gap, Va., 22 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Allen Michael Gilliam of the Right Hand Poor Valley Community in Pennington Gap, Va. was born in Warren County, Va. on Sunday, June 17, 1994 and passed away Wednesday, February 15, 2012 at his home at the age of 17 years. He had lived in Lee County for the past three years.

Allen was a Senior at Lee High School in Ben Hur, Va., and was of the Christian Faith. He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Karen Baker and his aunt, Tysha Gilliam.

Robert Lee Britton, 81, of Rose Hill, Virginia passed away Saturday (February 18, 2012) at his home.

He lived most of his life in Lee County, was retired from Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), was of the Pentecostal faith and was a veteran of the Korean Conflict.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Coraine Britton; 2 sons, Wilfred Britton and Garry Britton; 3 brothers, Phil Britton, Art Britton and Frank Britton; mother, Ludy Britton and father, John Britton.

He is survived by:

4 sons: Jack Britton, Frank Britton and Bobby Britton all of Rose Hill, Virginia and Pete Britton of Harrogate, Tennessee

James (Jim) Witt age 85, passed away Saturday, February 18, 2012 in Johnson City, TN. He was a resident of Pennington Gap, VA but had lived many years in Baltimore, MD where he retired from AT&T. He served his country during WWII and was born November 8, 1926.

Jim was preceded in death by his wife, Helen, mother, Margorie Sexton, brother, Curtis Witt and sister-in-law, Gerlinde Witt. He is survived by his loving sister, Pauline Taylor of Pennington Gap, VA and his brother, Charles Sexton of Marion, IN, and many nephews and nieces.

Ocie was a homemaker and of the Baptist Faith. She was preceded in death by her father, Hubert L. Gibson, grandparents, Emmitt and Maurine Gibson and Frank and Mae Gibson, two brothers, Ralph and Tommy Gibson and one special cousin, Annie Gibson.

Ocie is survived by two daughters, two brothers, Tony Gibson and wife, Sarah of Pennington Gap, Va. and J.D. He was a member of Friendship Baptist Church of Jonesville.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Jeannette Rorrer and parents, William Rorrer & Monnie Belcher Rorrer.

Elsa Rhee Hensley Grabeel, of Rose Hill, Virginia, passed away Sunday (February 26, 2012) at the Wellmont Lee Regional Medical Center in Pennington Gap, Virginia.

A resident of Lee County, Virginia for most of her life, she was a founding member of Rose Hill First Baptist Church and was a 63 year member of Cumberland Chapter 170 of the Order of the Eastern Star.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Sanders Grabeel; her parents, Gill and Martha Hensley; an infant son, James Robert Grabeel; and two brothers, Byrd Hensley and Lester Hensley.

Deanna Rutherford Deskins of Pennington Gap, Va. was born in St. Charles, Va. on Sunday, April 6, 1941 and passed away at her home in Pennington Gap, Va. on Tuesday, February 28, 2012 at the age of 70 years. She moved from Lee County in 1957 and returned in 1992.

Deanna was a homemaker and of the Baptist Faith. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jerry Deskins, one son, Petie Kromberg, parents, Neal and Bonnie Rutherford, brother, Gene Rutherford and sister, Joan Dillinger.

Deanna is survived by three daughters, Michele Deskins, Deanna Kromberg and Kristie Mason all of Pennington Gap, Va., one son, Tim Kromberg, seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, two brothers, Randell Rutherford of Flatrock, Mi. and Gail Rutherford of Redford, Mi. and one sister, Greta Alsup of Pennington Gap, Va.

Quentin Gene (Tub) Speck 78 of Morristown passed away Friday, March 2, 2012 at Morristown-Hamblen Healthcare Systems. Mr. Speck retired from American Enka after 37 years and was an underage veteran of the US Army.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Bud and Eula Speck; brother, Sanford Speck; sisters, Virginia (Flipo) Garrett and Sue Dean.

He was born December 4, 1938 at Galax, Virginia to the late Fred Miller Bennington and Anna Laura Rhudy Bennington. He was a member of Jonesville First Baptist Church, an avid Virginia Tech fan, and a member of the Monogram Club and Independence Masonic Lodge #129.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Maggie Poteet Shelton, sister, Theda Mae McConnell and first wife, Julia Pankow Shelton. Survived by his loving wife and soul mate, Martina "Marti" Mabelitini Shelton, sister, Ruth S. Akridge, East Stone Gap, VA, brothers, Charles "Jack" Shelton and wife Barbara, Frederick, OK., Judge William R. Shelton, Chester, VA., special nieces, Zella Faye Ferrell, Oakwood, OH., Martha M. "Snook" was an Army Air Force Co-Pilot, World War II Veteran and a graduate of Lincoln Memorial University, Harrogate, TN. He established and served as president of Shelton Insurance Agency for 54 years. During his insurance career he received numerous awards, including Man of the Year, which was featured in an article in Life Magazine, and the President's Award.

Shelton's civic involvement included the following: president of the Lee Airport when it first started in 1963; president and chairman of the board of the Lee County Cedar Hill Country Club; president and chairman of the board of the Lee County Community Hospital. He was instrumental in getting the new hospital built in Lee County.

Shelton is a member of the Foundation Board of Mountain Empire Community College, a member of the Powell Valley Shrine Club, and a member of the Kazim Temple in Roanoke. In 2008 he was named LMU'S Alumnus of the year. Shelton and his wife were honored with the dedication of Shelton Hall. Shelton was selected for the VCCS (Virginia Community Colleges and Schools) Chancellor's Award for Leadership in Philanthropy in 2009 and was inducted into the Mountain Empire Community College Foundation Hall of Honor in April 2009. Shelton was selected as the 2011 Grand Marshall of the 63rd Lee County Tobacco/Fall Festival. He was a long time member of the First United Methodist Church in Pennington Gap, VA.

Hilda Eileen Raines of Pennington Gap, Va. was born in Lee County on Thursday, January 24, 1935 and went to be with the Lord on Friday, March 16, 2012 at the Wellmont Lee Regional medical Center in Pennington Gap at the age of 77 years. She was a resident of Pennington gap most of her life and was a retired clerk for Eds Grocery. She was also of the Baptist Faith. She was preceded in death by her parents, Morgan and Beulah Benfield Terry. Three brothers, John, Andrew and Walter Terry and Grandparents, Harve and Lilly Benfield. She is survived by two sons, John Setchel and wife Linda of Odenville, Alabama and James Whiting of Richmond, Va. and 10 grandchildren. One brother, Bruce Terry of Virginia Beach, Va. and one sister, Doris Carroll of Dasher, Ga. Also several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Memorial services will be held at 7:00 P.M. Wednesday, March 21, 2012 in the Province Funeral Home Sanctuary in Pennington Gap with Rev. ??????? Officiating. Visitation will be held from 5:00 P.M. Wednesday until time of services. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Thursday March 22, 2012 at the Millers Chapel Cemetery in Jonesville, Va. Family and friends are asked to meet at the cemetery at 10:45 A.M. Thursday for the service. In Lieu of flowers, the family request that you make donations to a charity of your choice. Ada Virginia Miles of the Long Hollow Community of Rt. 3 Pennington Gap was born in Lee County on Friday, May 22, 1925 and went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, March 17, 2012 at the Bristol Regional Medical Center in Bristol, TN. at the age of 86 years. She is the last of her siblings. She had been a resident of Lee County all of her life and was a member of the Low View Baptist Church since 1952. She was preceded in death by her husband, Austin Miles in the year 2000. Her parents, Andrew Pendergraft and Lucretia Houndshell Pendergraft. Six brothers, Virgil, Elmer, Bill, Harve, Ira Calvin and Lee Pendergraft and two sisters, Sally and Rella Haynes. She is survived by two sons, Bruce Miles and wife Connie of Jonesville, Va. and Jackie Miles of the home. One daughter, Cathy Miles of the home. 4 grandchildren, Andy Miles and wife Shelly of Mt. Carmel, TN. and twins Samuel and Timothy Miles of Jonesville and Stephen Miles, also of Jonesville. Also several nieces and nephews and many friends.

Funeral services will be held at 8:00 P.M. Tuesday, March 20, 2012 in the Province Funeral Home Sanctuary in Pennington Gap with Rev. Carlos Wolfe, Carl Rogers and grandson Samuel Miles Officiating. Visitation will be held from 6:00 P.M. Tuesday until time of services. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, March 21, 2012 at the Millers Chapel Cemetery in Jonesville, Va. Family and friends are asked to meet at the Funeral Home at 10:00 A.M. Wednesday to go to the cemetery. Grandsons and friends will serve as pallbearers. David Bates of the Dot Community in Pennington Gap, Va. was born in New York on Saturday, December 30, 1950 and passed away on Sunday, March 18, 2012 at the Lee Regional Medical Center in Pennington Gap, Va. at the age of 61 years.

David had been the mayor of St. Charles, Va. about 25 years ago. He was retired and a Veteran of the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War and was also of the Baptist Faith. He was preceded in death by his parents, Leslie and Lucille Bates.

David is survived by his wife, Donna Bates of the home, one son, David Bates and wife, Shannon of Whitesburg, Ky. Four grandchildren, Kayleigh, Alex, Abigail and Jonathan Bates and special friend, Silas Shelburn.

David is also survived by his brothers, Bryan Bates of Florida and Dean Bates of New York, his sisters, Diane Scheiber and husband, Ken, Sue O Geen and husband, Charlie, Sandy Snell and husband, Danny and Shirlee Bates all of New York, Joyce Cottom and husband, Dean of Florida and Tracey Sittig and husband, John of North Carolina, his sisters-in-law, Patsy Scott of Virginia, Susan Brown of Texas, Jennifer Scott of Virginia and Gloria Jean Scott of Virginia and his brothers-in-law, Junior Scott and Terry Scott both of Virginia.

A memorial service will be held at 7:00 PM Thursday, March 22, 2012 at the Province Funeral Home Sanctuary in Pennington Gap, Va. with Dr. Charles Barrier officiating. And special singing by Crystal Huff.

Visitation will be from 6:00 PM Thursday until the time of the service.
