Hassie M. Osborne, 69, of Rose Hill passed away Monday (November , 2010) at Holston Valley Medical Center.

She was a lifelong resident of Rose Hill and a member of Rose Dale Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, J.R. Osborne, Jr.; parents, Jack & Maude Pauley; 2 brothers; 5 sisters; step son, Larry Osborne.

Surviving are:

One son: Trevor Osborne and Ashley Jones of Rose Hill, Virginia

Three daughters: Robin Eads and husband, Joe of Spring City, Tennessee; Karen Keck and husband, Sidney of Tazewell, Tennessee; and Michelle McCoy and husband, Mark of Spring City, Tennessee

One step-daughter: Judy Montgomery and husband, Bill of Lawrenceville, Georgia

Graveside services will follow the service in the Osborne Cemetery in Rose Hill, Virginia.

James Roger Brooks
(October 13, 1961 - November 8, 2010)

James Roger Brooks, 49, of Rose Hill passed away unexpectantly on November 8, 2010.

He was born to James & Ester Brooks on October 13, 1961 in Kingsport, TN.

Roger was a lifelong resident of Lee Co. and a member of 1st Baptist Church of Ewing.

He had many hobbies such as being an assistant basketball coach in his son’s youth league, boating, fishing, camping, working on cars, and he has probably fed most of Ewing at one time or another.

He is preceded in death by his father James Brooks & grandparents, H.T. & Virginia Brooks and Beulah Durham.

Artenia “Tina” Madden a resident of the Kemmerer Gem Community, was born in St. Charles, Va. on Saturday, May 23, 1938 and passed away Tuesday, November 9, 2010 at the Providence Park Hospital in Novi, MI at the age of 72 years. She had lived in Lee County, Va. most of her life and the past month in Michigan with her daughter.

Artenia was a homemaker and of the Baptist Faith. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bryan Madden, parents, Leondous and Roxie (England) King.

Artenia is survived by four sons, Ronald Pranger and wife, Pam of Taylor, MI, Joseph Pranger and wife, Shirley of San Antonio, TX, Mitch Bronz of Jonesville, VA and Robert Corbin and wife, Dina of Wichita, KS, two daughters, Terry Marvin and husband, Larry of Canton, MI and Gerri Jones and husband, Lee of Dalton, GA. Ten grandchildren and five great-grandchildren and one brother, Leon C. King of St. Charles, Va.

The funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM Friday, November 12, 2010 at the Province Funeral Home Sanctuary in Pennington Gap, Va. with Rev. Roy Corbin officiating.

Jimmy Johnson, Sr. of Jonesville, Va. was born in Pennington Gap, Va. on Sunday, September 7, 1941 and passed away Thursday, November 11, 2010 at his home in Jonesville, Va. at the age of 69 years. He had lived in Lee County, Va. his entire life.

Jimmy retired as a carpenter and was of the Baptist Faith. He was preceded in death by his parents, Hobert and Mattie Johnson, three sisters, Mrytle Lawson, Bernice Carter and Lois Paxton and one brother, Everette Johnson.

Jimmy is survived by his wife, Fannie Johnson of the home, one son, Jimmy JL Johnson, Jr of Pennington Gap, Va., one daughter, Kathy Neal and Bruce Ely of Stickleyville, Va., two grandchildren, Brandi Loren Neal of Stickleyville, Va. and Madison Gabby Johnson of Pennington Gap, Va. and two sisters, Ressie M. Carter of Dayton, Ohio and Gladys Woodard of California.

Sherry Lynn Johnson Harris, 35, of Gate City, Virginia and formerly of Lee County, Virginia, passed away Thursday (November 11, 2010) at the Wellmont Hospice House in Bristol, Tennessee after a long battle with cancer.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Gate City, Virginia.

She was preceded in death by her father, Dean Johnson.

Surviving are:

Her mother: Mary Johnson of Johnson City, Tennessee

Three children: Miranda Nicole Harris, Dalton Kole Smith, and Kassie Marie Evans, all of Gate City, VA

One brother: Chris Johnson of Gate City, Virginia

Two nephews: Freddie Hamilton of Gate City, Virginia and Tommy Johnson of Gate City, Virginia

Josie Rhoten Gibson, a resident of Kingsport, Tn. was born in Lee Co., Va. on Saturday, July 14, 1923 and passed away on Thursday, November 11, 2010 at the Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport, Tn at the age of 87 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Will Rhoten, and daughters, Ruth Ely, Wilma Rhoten and one still born daughter, and several brothers. She was a homemaker and has lived in Tennessee for the past 20 years.

Josie is survived by four sons, Andy Rhoten and wife, Joyce of Kingsport, Tn, Woody Rhoten and wife, Brenda of Kingsport, Tn., Clyde Rhoten and wife, Betty of Mt.Carmel, Tn. and Donnie Gibson of Kingsport, Tn. Also, two daughters, Milligay Rhoten of Weber City, Va. and Barbara Middleton and husband, Rick of Kingsport, Tn. She is also survived by 14 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and one sister, Bessie Lewis of Ben Hur, Va. Also, a special friend and care giver, Crystal Gibson.

Betty Davis Eagle, 80, of Jonesville, Virginia, passed away Sunday (November 14, 2010) at the Lee Health and Rehabilitation Center in Pennington Gap, Virginia.

A lifelong resident of Lee County, Virginia, she was a member of York United Methodist Church in Jonesville, Virginia and was a retired school teacher’s aide with the Lee County School System.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, Bobby Bonham and J.R. Eagle; her parents, John and Lucille Davis; one sister, Natheta D. Poteet; one brother, Johnny Davis; and one grandson-in-law, Randy Orick.

Wendell Lee Scott, a resident of Rose Hill, Va. was born in Pennington Gap, Va. on Friday, July 31, 1942 and passed away on Sunday, November 14, 2010 at the Appalachian Regional Hospital in Middlesboro, Ky at the age of 68 years. He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred Scott and Ocie McMellan and one brother, Jerry Scott. He retired from the Lee Co. School System after serving 40 years as a bus driver. He has lived in Lee Co. most of his life and was of the Baptist faith.

Wendell is survived by his wife of 29 years, Joyce Scott of the home. One daughter, Regina Seabolt and husband, Randy of Rose Hill, Va. and 1 grandaughter, Hannah Seabolt of Rose Hill, Va. Also, 1 brother, George Walter Scott of Tazewell, Tn., 3 cousins, Arnold Hensley of Jonesville, Va. Boyd Lee “Dave” Stamey of the Wagner Town Community in St. Charles, Va. was born in North Carolina on Monday, May 17, 1926 and passed away Sunday, November 14, 2010 at Lee Nursing and Rehab in Pennington Gap, Va. at the age of 84 years. He had been a resident of St. Charles for 35 years.

Boyd retired from Williams Auto Parts, was a Veteran of the U.S. Navy and was of the Methodist Faith. He was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Hargus Stamey, one son, Gary Stamey, one daughter, Donna Barnes, step-son, Leonard Sprouse, parents, Roby and Flora Maltby Stamey and two brother and two sisters.

Pennington Gap, VA Iris Garrett age 86, of Left Poor Valley Community passed awy on Wednesday November 17, 2010.She was a lifelong resident of Lee County the daughter of the late James E. and Annis Ball Gilbert. She had been a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Pennington Gap since 1948.She was preceded in death by her husband, Herman K. Garrett on March 4, 1987, two sons: Jackie R. Garrett and Bobby Lee Garrett, daughter-in-law Mary Ann Garrett and granddaughter, Ramona Garrett.

Surviving are two sons: Paul K. Garrett and wife Sandra, and David Garrett all of Pennington Gap, VA. Four grandchildren, Paul Garrett Jr., Sherry Denise Garrett Bowling,Vicki Garrett Alsup, Lacy Garrett Greear, and four great grandchildren.

Harry Field, Jr.
(September 16, 1922 - November 18, 2010)

Harry Field, Jr. of Ewing formerly of Detroit, MI, passed away November 18 at Lee Regional Medical Center.

He was in the Air Force during the World War II era and he navigated the B17 Bomber.

Mr. Field later worked for Wilson Automation as an electrical engineer.

He was a member of the Rose Hill Church of God.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Nondis Rose Spencer Field, two sons, Richard James Raye & Harry Field III; brothers, Art & Fred Field.

Fannie Morris Rutherford, a resident of Pulaski, Va. where she has made her home for the past several years, was born in Jonesville, Va. on Sunday, December 24, 1911 and went peacefully to be with her Lord on Friday, November 19, 2010 at the age of 98 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Jim Rutherford, her parents, John and Lizzie McConnell Morris, her brothers, Harrison, Edgar and Odie Morris, her sisters, Otsy Wood, Pearl Valentine and Rosa Rutherford, her granddaughter, Sandra Nester, grandson (twin) Billy Haynes, son-in-law, Bob Haynes.

Fannie attributed her long life to clean living and serving the Lord. She was a Christian from her youth. She was an avid lover of flowers, loved reading when she was able, especially her bible. She will be greatly missed by family and friends and was loved by all. She lived many years in Jonesville, Va. before going to Pulaski, Va. she was a homemaker, a long time member of the Rebecca Lodge in Jonesville, Va. and Rose Hill, Va. She was a member of the Occonita Freewill Baptist Church in Jonesville, Va. but last attended the New Hope Missionary Baptist Church in Pulaski, Va.

Fannie is survived by 4 sons, Morris Rutherford and wife, Billie of Pontiac, Mich., Bill Rutherford and wife, Louise of Pulaski, Va., Dale Rutherford of the home (Pulaski,Va.) Harold Rutherford and wife, Jewell of Powell, Tn. 2 daughters, June Nester and husband Talmage of Pulaski, Va., Wanda Woodard and husband Ed of Jonesville, Va. 10 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and 6 great-great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be held at 1:00 PM Monday in the Sanctuary of the Province Funeral Home in Pennington Gap, Va. with Rev. L.J. Ellis officiating.

Burial will follow in the McConnell Cemetery in Jonesville, Va. Visitation will be from 6:00 PM until 9:00 PM Sunday at the funeral home.

Michael William Elliott, a resident of Jonesville, Va. was born in Pennington Gap, Va. on Wednesday, June 3, 1964 and passed away in Jonesville, Va. on Saturday, November 20, 2010 at the age of 46 years. He was preceded in death by his father, Oren Howard Elliott, Jr. a brother, Christopher Elliott, paternal grandparents, Howard & Elsie Elliott, maternal grandparents, Mable Sheffield and William James Harris. He was a construction worker, lived all his life in Lee Co. and was of the Baptist belief.

Mike is survived by his daughter, Christy Teffeteller and husband, Aaron of Mt. Carmel, Tn. His mother, Faye Elliott of Jonesville, Va. One sister, Vicki Stallard of Dryden and one brother, Howard Elliott, III of Woodway, Va.

THOMAS E. HUNLEY, 49, of Rose Hill passed away unexpectedly due to an accident on November 22, 2010.

He attended Friendship Independent Missionary Baptist Church.

Thomas was a member of the Thomas Walker Rescue Squad.

He also was a reserve deputy with the Lee County Sheriff Dept.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Patty Hunley and grandpa, Tom Ketron & Flora Ketron-Rice and Lydia & Alonzo Hunley.

Wilma Melilna Garrett of Keokee, Va. was born in Stonega, Va. on Saturday, February 28, 1931 and went to be with her Lord on Sunday, November 21, 2010 at her home in Keokee at the age of 79 years. She had been a resident of Lee County, Va. most of her life.

Alaphare Lewis of Pennington Gap, Va. was born in Harlan County, Ky. on Thursday, August 18, 1932 and passed away Sunday, November 21, 2010 at the Lee Regional Medical Center in Pennington Gap, Va. at the age of 78 years. She had been a resident of Lee County for the past 38 years.

Alaphare was a homemaker and a member of the First Christian Church in Pennington Gap, Va. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Henry Lewis, parents, Daniel Boone Green and Luticia Cole Green, brothers, Gus Green, Arnold Green and J.B. Green, sisters, Estelle Carhart, Elenor Melvin, Ora Luckadoo and Camilla Ledford.

Alaphare is survived by two sons, Chester Lewis and Charles Peanut Lewis both of Kingsport, TN. Two grandchildren Kaela and Daniel Lewis, one brother Denver Green of Lake City, TN and one sister, Jean Moberly of Norris, TN.

The memorial service will be held at 1:00 PM Wednesday, November 24, 2010 at the First Christian Church in Pennington Gap, Va. with Bob Richards officiating.

Carl Bud Harber was born in St.Charles, Va. on September 22, 1941 and passed away on November 22, 2010 at the Bristol Hospice House in Bristol, Tn. at the age of 69 years... He was a retired coal miner and had lived most of his life in Lee Co.

Bud was preceded in death by a son, Wesley Carl Harber, his parents, Tee and Hattie Cottrell Harber, his brothers, Eugene, Clarence, Pearl and Ronald Harber, his sisters, Maggie H. Muse and Bernice Harber.

Bud is survived by one son, Terry Harber and wife, Vera Vicky of St. Charles, Va., daughters, Lisa Scalf and husband, James of Dot, Va., Lori Villanueva and husband, Rick of Vaccaville, Calf., and Vicki Harber and husband, Tim Tabor of Keokee, Va. Hattie Mae Treadway, a resident of the Long Hollow Community in Jonesville, Va. was born in Jonesville on Friday, June 29, 1928 and passed away Tuesday, November 23, 2010 at the Holston Valley Hospital in Kingsport, TN. at the age of 82 years. She had lived in Florida for about 50 years before coming back to Lee County. She was a 1947 graduate of Jonesville High School, Jonesville, Va.

Hattie retired from Florida Telephone as a service representative after 31 years of service and she was a member of the First Baptist Church in Jonesville. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Treadway, parents, Jim and Sallie Pendergraft Haynes, brothers, Tom Pendergraft, Hobert Haynes and Bob Haynes and sisters, Ruth Green and Barbara Gioscio.

Hattie is survived by one daughter, Brenda Lamb and husband, Wayne of Pennington Gap, Va., four grandchildren, Jordan, Sara, Matthew and April and two great-grandchildren, Ethan and Gavin and three sisters, Thelma Sword and Judy Hines both of Indianapolis, In. and Louise Rutherford and husband, Bill of Pulaski, Va. Also a host of nieces and nephews that were very dear to her.

Martha Ricker, a resident of Pennington Gap, Va. was born in the Pucketts Creek Community of Pennington Gap, Va. on Wednesday, April 10, 1929 and passed away Friday, November 26, 2010 at Welmont Holston Valley Hospital in Kingsport, Tn at the age of 81.

Martha was preceded in death by her parents, William and Eva Turner, her first husband, Johnny Garrett and second husband, Curt Ricker, sons, Willard and Wayne Garrett, brothers, Ellis, Bobby, Brack and Millard Turner, her sisters, Ruby Rogers, Mary Parks and Mable Dean. She has lived all her life in Lee Co. and was a member of the Friendship Baptist Church on Pucketts Creek.

Martha is survived by her daughters, Evelyn Miller of Noblesville, Ind and Betty Kimberlin of Pennington Gap, Va. and six step children, also eleven grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by two brothers, Willard and Burlin Turner both of Indiana, and one sister, Carrie Justice of London, Ky.

Funeral was at 12 noon Sunday with burial in Millers Chapel Cemetery, Jonesville, Va.

The funeral service will be held at 7:00 PM Tuesday, December 7, 2010 at the Province Funeral Home Sanctuary in Pennington Gap, Va. with Rev. Josh Osteen officiating.

Visitation will be from 5:00 PM Tuesday until the time of the service.

Burial will be Wednesday at Lee Memorial Gardens in Woodway, Va.

In lieu of a graveside service family and friends are asked to meet at the funeral home at 12:00 noon Wednesday. Condolences can be sent to the family at provincefuneralhome@earthlink.net
