Pennington Gap, VA

Dunn M. Pennington age 81, of the Woodway community passed away on Wednesday March 2, 2011 at Ridgecrest Manor in Duffield, VA. He was a lifelong resident of Lee County, the son of the late Merven John Pennington and Audrey Alena Dunn. He was employed with Rogers Home Decorating in Pennington Gap. He, then became self-employed operating Pennington's Tropical Fish in Woodway, VA. He was a member of the Woodway Missionary Baptist Church.

Dunn was preceded in death by a son, Rick Pennington, one grandson, Dennis Charles Pennington and a sister Amy Joe Pennington Little.

Suvivors include his loving wife of 63 years, Wilma Pennington of Woodway,VA Two daughters, Alena Pennington Garrison and husband, Gary of Pennington Gap, VA. Denise Pennington Burgin and husband, Eric of Gaffney, SC. Three sons, John Dunn Pennington and wife, Helen of Kingsport, TN, Bill Merve Pennington of Bristol, TN, Michael John Pennington and wife, Sylvia of Woodway, VA. 14 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, one sister, Mary Elizabeth Rogers of Pennington Gap, VA.

Family will receive friends from 6 until 8:00 p. m. on Friday March 4, 2011 in Sturgill Funeral Home with services following with Rev. Ed Woodard officiating.

Graveside services will be held on Saturday, March 5, at 1:00 p. m. in Cecil-Fry Cemetery in Pennington Gap. Pallbearers will be sons -in- law, grandsons, and great grandsons.

Peggy Whited Ayers, 73 of Rogersville, TN was born in Inman, Va. on Saturday, March 27 1937 and passed away Friday, March 4, 2011 in Lexington Ky. She was the widow of Les Ayers and was a retired registered nurse.

In addition to her husband, she is preceded in death by her parents, Leonard and Jennie Whited.

Peggy is survived by her daughter Tonya (Andrew) Coleman; sons Keith (Mamie) Ayers, Donald (Evelyn) Ayers and Leslie Ayers; sister, Patricia (Henry) Kressee; grandsons, Gene, Jerry Lee, Leslie Aaron, Jacob, James, Jerome, Rodney, and Donleonard; granddaughters, Jadeyn and Meghan; special niece Tanvia (Randy Stephens) Kressee, nephew Timothy (Tammy Kahrig) Kressee; great-nephews Justin Chambers and Trent Carroll; and great-nieces Hannah and Hiley.

The funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM Sunday, March 6, 2011 at the Province Funeral Home Sanctuary in Pennington Gap, Va. with Gary Williams officiating.

Burial will follow at Lee Memorial Gardens in Woodway, Va.

Visitation will be from 1:00 PM Sunday until the time of the service.

Dryden, VA

Martha Kate Livesay age 76, passed away Friday, March 4, 2011 at Holston Valley Hospital in Kingsport, TN. She was born and raised in Blackwater, VA, the daughter of the late George Wesley and Cora Roberts. She had been a resident of Dryden since 1970. She was a retired cook of Pennington High School and Pennington Middle School for 24 years. She was a member of the Powell Valley Rebeccah Lodge #50.

Martha loved to fish, travel and square dance. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Harold Lester Stewart, second husband, Harmon Roy Livesay, sisters, Ollie Roberts, Sarah Roberts, Lillie Roberts, Cora Roberts, Edna Roberts and Grace Roberts: brothers, Charles Roberts, Calvin Jessee Roberts, Thurman Roberts, George Albert Roberts and Louis B. Roberts.

Survivors include one son, James Wesley Stewart and wife, Robin of Greeneville, TN. one daughter, Kathy Parsons and husband Mike of Pennington Gap, VA. One step-son, Mitchell Livesay and wife, Sally of Speedwell, TN.. One brother, Morris Roberts of Blackwater, VA. Two sisters, Ina Duff of Pennington Gap, VA, Evelyn Maples of Kingsport, TN. Special niece, Mary Schauer of Pennington Gap, VA.

Family will receive friends on Monday, March 7, from 6 until 8:00 p. m. at Sturgill Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be conducted at 8:00 P. M. with Rev. Bob Richards officiating.

Wilmer Glen Parsons, a resident of the Big Hill Community, Rt. 3 Pennington Gap, Va. was born in the Millers Chapel area of Jonesville, VA. Friday, May 27, 1927 and passed away on Friday, March 4, 2011 at the age of 83 years. He was preceded in death by his wife, Loretta Moore Parsons, a son, Billy Glenn Parsons and several brothers, sisters, nieces and nephews. He was a retired coal miner and farmer and was a veteran of the US Army, serving during WW ll.

Wilmer is survived by one son, James Parsons and wife Karen of Pennington Gap, Va. Three daughters, Lorene Dennison and husband, Benny of Pennington Gap, Va., Helen Jones and husband, Robert of Big Stone Gap, Va. and Joyce Rhoten and husband, Andy of Kingsport, Tn. and 12 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be held at 8:00 PM Monday, March 7, 2011 with Pastor David Salley officiating.

Visitation will be from 6 until time of the service on Monday.

The graveside will be held at 11:00 AM Tuesday at the Powell Valley Cemetery in Dryden, Va.

Thelma Slemp Bays
(March 12, 1925 - March 6, 2011)

Thelma Slemp Bays, of Jonesville, Virginia, passed away Sunday, March 6, 2011 at the age of 85 years. She was born on March 12, 1925 in Lee County. She was a member of Hubbard Springs Christian Church.

Thelma was a retired federal employee for the United States Army at Fort Benjamin Harrison in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Thelma and her husband, Crofton Bays, were residents of Noblesville, Indiana for 28 years before retiring to Lee County in 1988.

Thelma was preceded in death by: Crofton Bays, her husband of 60 years; her parents, Maude Blanken and William B.H. Slemp; her sister and brother-in-law, Dorcas and Wilson Eldridge; and her brother, William Gale Slemp.

Thelma is survived by her two children: daughter, Linda Lunsford and husband Bill, of Beaver Dam, Kentucky; and son, Crofton Bays, Jr. (Mac) of Lexington, Kentucky. She is also survived by one devoted sister-in-law, Jean Slemp, of Jonesville, Virginia.

The family will have visitation on Wednesday, March 9, 2011 at Hubbard Springs Christian Church beginning at 10:00 a.m. with funeral services following at 11:00 a.m. Reverend Dr. Kenneth Ellis will be officiating.

Burial will immediately follow at Hubbard Springs Christian Church Cemetery.

Barbara Jean Fleenor of Big Stone Gap, Va. was born in Benedict, Va. on Wednesday, July 24, 1935 and passed away Monday, March 7, 2011 at the Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport, TN. at the age of 76 years. She had lived in Illinois for several years and the past nine years in Wise County, Va.

Barbara was a homemaker and of the Pentecostal Faith. She was preceded in death by her parents, Roy and Omalee Rutherford.

Barbara Jean is survived by her husband, Gene Fleenor of Big Stone Gap, Va., two sons, Ronald Gene Boes of Newman, Ga. and Ed Boes of Wisconsin, one daughter, Deborah Boes of Illinois, one step-son, Scott Fleenor of Portsmouth, Oh., numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren, three brothers, Roy Kenneth Rutherford, Raymond Rutherford and Danny Joe Rutherford all of Indiana and three sisters, Anna Mae Wagoner, Genevia Thompson and Darlene Williams all of Indiana.

William Rivers

William Rivers, 59, of Ewing, Virginia, passed away Tuesday (March 8, 2011) at the Wellmont Lee Regional Medical Center in Pennington Gap, Virginia after a long battle with cancer.

Will was a lover of life and was a faithful member of Old Arthurs Chapel Church. He loved God most of all. He loved to sing in church and had a desire to serve God no matter where he was or what his circumstance. He loved to use his God given talent to carve wood to help others and loved to fish. He was an inspiration to all of those who truly knew him. He is gone, but never forgotten.

He was preceded in death by his father, Joseph Rivers; his grandparents, Margaret and Charles Cain; and his aunts and uncle, Mary Wilson, Joe Cain, Pearl Cain, and Bessie Turner.

June Amelia Wright Parsons age 86, of Jonesville, Va. was born in Inman, VA on Tuesday, June 17, 1924 and passed away Tuesday, March 8, 2011 at Heritage Hall in Big Stone Gap, Va., with recently discovered cancer. She was a graduate of St. Charles High School, formerly worked at Piggly Wiggly, was a homemaker and of the Baptist Faith. She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Parsons whom she married July 31, 1943, her parents, Robert Walter and Ada Richardson Wright, brothers, Ben, Kyle and Jim Wright, one sister, Doris Pennington and half sister, Hazel Pippin.

June is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Hershel and Teresa Parsons of Gastonia, NC, sisters, Wilma Cooper of Pennington Gap, Va. and Eula Roberts of Woodway, Va. and special relative, Ruth Surber of Pennington Gap, Va.

George Emory Marcum, 91, of Ewing, Virginia passed away Friday (March 11, 2011) at Welmont Lee Regional Medical Center in Pennington Gap, Virginia.

George was born in Ewing, Virginia June 21, 1919 and had worked as a carpenter’s helper.

He was preceded in death by parents, White and Minnie Smith Marcum; three sisters, Blanche Stanley, Kathline Yeary and Jean Marcum; and three brothers, Shuler, Benton and Lewis Marcum.

Gaines A. Farmer of Jonesville formerly of Haysi passed away on March 12, 2011 at Lee Regional Medical Center.

He was retired from Budd Co. in Detroit MI and was a member of the VFW in Hazel Park MI.

Gaines was a member of Beech Grove Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Emmet and Virgie Farmer and a brother, Finis Farmer.

Robert C. Adams, 89, of Dryden, Virginia, went to be with the Lord March 13, 2011, at Johnson Willis Hospital in Chesterfield, Virginia. He was born November 28, 1921 in Horry County, South Carolina and the son of Nathan and Florrie Adams. He was the oldest of seven children. He was preceded in death by two wives, Frances Adams and Winnie Adams, brother, Dick Adams and sister, Llalane Barker. He was a World War II Veteran and P.O.W., recipient of four bronze service stars and many other campaign medals. His service to his country was served in Normandy, North France, Ardennes, and Rhineland from December, 1943 to December, 1945. He was a retired coal miner.

Robert was survived by: Daughters, Frances Nickodam and Rhonda Cox; sons-in-law, Charles Nickodam and Sherman Cox; Brothers, Nathan Adams and Jackson Adams; Sisters, Eleanor Smallwood and Susan Keen; Grandchildren, Don and Angela Hopper, Anthony and Amanda LeRocca, Mark and Beth Cox, and Aimee Cox; Great-grandchildren, Katie Hopper, and Jimmy Hopper; Four step-daughters and one step-son.

Service will be held Thursday, March 17 at Province Funeral Home in Pennington Gap, VA.

Dryden, VA

Georgia Parsons Edens age 90, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, March 16, 2011 at Lee Nursing and Rehab Center. She was born in Scott County, VA, the last surviving member of the late Palmer and Mary Alice Wilson Parsons. She had lived in the Dryden area most of her life, was a member of the Dryden Baptist Church. She was a member of the Powell Valley Rebekah Lodge # 50.

Georgia had worked in the cafeteria at the Dryden School, Old Lee General Hospital, and later the Lonesome Pine Hospital in Big Stone Gap, VA. She loved gardening and attending her flowers. She was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer Edens in 1964. Twin Brother, George Parsons, sister, Ora Belcher and daughters, Lucille Barker and Frances Oaks.

Survivors include one daughter; Charlotte Collins and husband, Jack of Jonesville, VA. Two sons; Gerald Edens of Dryden, VA. Larry Donald Edens of Jonesville, VA. 12 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild. Many nieces and nephews and a host of friends. Ellen Isom Belcher Lemar, a resident of the Left Hand Poor Valley Community, Rt. 1 Pennington Gap, VA was born in Bonny Blue, St. Charles, VA, on Tuesday, April 24, 1928 and passed away on Friday, March 18, 2011 at the Lee Regional Medical Center in Pennington Gap, VA, at the age of 82. She was a housewife, loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and sister. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Herbert Buddy Belcher, second husband, Sammy Lemar, her parents, Sam & Cora Raleigh Isom and one brother, Sam E. Isom. She has lived in Lee Co. most of her life and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Pennington Gap, VA.

Ellen is survived by one daughter, Rosharon Blevins of Woodway, VA. Three sons, Roger Belcher and wife, Sharon of Taylor, Michigan, Randy and Don Belcher, both of Pennington Gap, VA. Her grandchildren, Melissa, Shannon, Angie, Robbie, Cari, Kristi, Randalene, Ronnie, Derek and Alisha. Her great-grandchildren, Justus, Joshua, Chelsea, Anjoulee, Faith, Skyler, Olivia, K.K, Hannah and Caleb.

Ellen is also survived by 6 brothers, Willard Isom and wife, Shirley of Detroit, MI, Charles Isom and wife, Karen of Dearborn Heights, MI, Alvin Isom and wife, Phyllis of Pennington Gap, VA, David Isom and wife, Pat of Howell, MI, Phillip Isom and wife, Lorraine of Ormond Beach, FL and Gary Isom and wife, Portia of Willington, Ohio. She is also survived by one sister, Elizabeth Ritchie and husband, Ewel of Taylor, MI. Several nieces and nephews and a host of loving friends.

The funeral will be held at 1:00 PM Monday in the Sanctuary of the Province Funeral Home in Pennington Gap, Va. with Paul Davis, Jr. officiating.

Burial will follow at Lee Memorial Gardens in Woodway. Visitation will be at 11:00 AM until time of the service.

Coy D. "Monk" Cope of Jonesville went to be with the Lord at Carrington Place in Wytheville, Virginia on March 23, 2011 after a long illness.

He was born in and a life-time resident of Lee County Virginia.

He was the son of the late Mr. James B. Cope, and the late Mrs. Roxie Cope of Lee County.

He held a GED from the Flatwoods High School and had continuing education from the Virginia Department of Highways.

He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant daughter, Brenda Kay Cope; four brothers Hubert Cope, Earnest "Pig" Cope, Ronald Cope, and Harold Cope and five sisters, Norman Jean Cope, Lois Shell, Ticia Blevins, Emma Wilder, and Faye Wilder.

He was a Deacon and Member of Beech Grove Baptist Church of Jonesville, Virginia where he served and loved faithfully as his place of worship before he became too ill to attend.

He was retired from the Virginia Department of Highways as a Maintenance Superintendent and also loved to work as a farmer, especially with his favorite Black Angus cattle.

He is survived by his faithful and loving wife of 68 years, Mrs. Maxie Gollahon Cope, of whom he married on April 3, 1943, who is now a resident of Carrington Place in Wytheville, Virginia. Other survivors are a son, Rev. Gary Coy Cope and wife, Carolyn of Wytheville, VA; three grandchildren, Mrs. Melissa Cassell and husband, Paul of Wytheville, Ms. Tracy Gibson of Wytheville, and Rev. Stacy Coy Cope and wife, Sunshine of Pulaski, Virginia; six great-grandchildren, Michael Coy Cope, Joe Cope, Katie Gibson, Elizabeth Grace "Baby Beth" Cassell, Wes Montgomery and Will Montgomery; three sisters, Mrs. Mabel "Cotton" Wilder and husband Robert of Trinity, North Carolina, Mrs. Ruby "Boode" Cope, of Jonesville, VA., Mrs. Christine Wolfenbarger and husband, Paul of Talbott, TN and one brother, Carlos Cope of Horsham, PA.

She had been a resident of Jonesville, Va. for 28 years and Adger, Al. for the past four years. She had been a supervisor in the medical field and was a member of the First Baptist Church in Jonesville, Va. where she was a member of the WMU.

Agnes was preceded in death by her parents, Harmon and Alpha Wallen, brothers, Mack, Par Wallen and her twin sister, Mavis Martin.

Agnes is survived by two nephews, Sherrill Martin of Jonesville, Va. and Glen Googie Wallen of Adger, Al., two nieces, Sheila Martin of Jonesville, Va. and Ernestine Wallen of Somerset, Ky. and several grand nieces and nephews.

Jonesville, Virginia Zelma J.Russell, 75, passed away Friday (March 25, 2011) at Wellmont Lee Regional Medical Center in Pennington Gap, VA.

She was a lifelong resident of Lee County and a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Pennington Gap, Virginia. She had been a nurse for 44 years and had worked as Dr. Kelly Taylor’s nurse and also at Lee General Hospital. She was a member of the Virginia Rebekah Lodge and member of the Emergency Medical Disaster Relief Nurse team.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Andrew Jackson Johnson and Ida Faye Lambert Johnson.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Gracie Wallen, one brother, Fred Wallen and one brother-in-law, Elmer Bowen. She was preceded in death by her parents, Bill & Fay Snavely; papaws & mamaws, Mr. & Mrs. Rader Snavely and Mr. & Mrs. Carl Crossland.

(April 8, 1922 - April 14, 2011)

Ewing, Virginia

Dorothy Gilpin, 89, of Ewing, Virginia passed away Thursday, April 14, 2011 at Middlesboro Appalachian Regional Hospital.

She was a lifelong resident of Lee County, a merchant, owner and operator of Gilpin Grocery for 48 years and a member of First Baptist Church of Ewing, Virginia.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Clyde C. Gilpin and parents, Floyd and Ola Dean Saylor.

She is survived by:

Daughter, Tonja Nord, Alabaster, AL

Four sisters, Florence Cox, Irene Cottrell and Joy Bolinger all of Harrogate, TN and Lila Brook, Kokomo, IN

A host of relatives and many, many friends

Visitation will be 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Saturday, April 16, 2011 at Arney-Mullins Funeral Home in Rose Hill, Virginia.

Funeral service will follow at 7:00 p.m. Saturday in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Mike Humfleet and Rev. David Wade officiating.

Graveside service will be at 1:00 p.m. Sunday, April 17, 2011 at the Jones Cemetery in Ewing.

Those attending the graveside service are asked to meet at the cemetery.
