Jonesville, VA

Forrest “Ed” Hall, 75, of Jonesville, Virginia born August 16, 1935 in Lee County, peacefully passed away in his home on Friday, April 15, 2011.

Ed was a simple man and always wanted to be known as a truthful person no matter what the cost.

Ed was born and raised in Rose Hill, VA and went on to serve in the United States Air Force during the Berlin Crisis. He worked as a pressman at McCall Corporation of Dayton, Ohio, and a lineman for Powell Valley Electric. He was the owner and operator of several service stations in Ohio and Rose Hill, VA.

He was a long time merchant of Lee County as owner and operator of Ed’s Grocery and True Value Hardware, where he retired after 35 years of committed service to his community.

Ed was a lung cancer survivor. He enjoyed bluegrass music, camping, and spending time with his family and taking adventurous excursions with his dear friend Robert Estes.

He was a member of Mt. Olive Christian Church and faithfully attended Millers Chapel United Methodist Church with his wife until the end.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Lola Nida Hall; his sister, Loretta; and brothers, Jim, Gene and Colby “Bud”.

He is survived by:

His devoted wife of 53 years, Arline; beloved son, Dwight and wife Jackie; the apple of his eye, granddaughter, Alexandra “Ali” of Beverly, WV; and step-grandson, David Cline of Eastampton, NJ.

Siblings, Audrey Johnson and family of Oakridge, TN, Drucilla and husband Lawrence Hensley of Rose Hill, VA; Rosealee Hall of Chicago, IL, Barbara Hall and family of Fountain City, TN, Joyce Hall and family of Rochelle, IL and Robert Hall of Kingsport, TN.

In-laws, Quentin “Tub” and wife Faye Speck, Irene Garrett and family, all of Morristown, TN, Don Speck and spouse Mary of Kodak, TN, Aubra Paul Dean and family, Charlie Speck and wife Marie and family, Mrs. Betty Williams and family, Tracy Lynn Garrett and family all of Jonesville, VA and many more nieces and nephews that he loved dearly.

Visitation will be Monday starting at 5:00 p.m.

Funeral will be at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Lisa McLaughlin and Rev Wayne Rader officiating.

Burial will follow at Miller’s Chapel Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Millers Chapel United Methodist Church or Millers Chapel Cemetery.

Amy Garrett Carter a resident of Jonesville, Va. was born in Harlan, Ky. on Saturday, May 8, 1976 and passed away on Thursday, April 14, 2011 at the age of 34 years. She was preceded in death by her father, Willard Garrett, grandparents, Johnny and Martha Turner Garrett. She was a housewife and lived in Lee Co. her entire life and was of the Baptist faith.

Amy is survived by her mother, Mellissa Marshall of Big Stone Gap, Va., her husband, Tim Carter of the home, one son, Dalton Timothy Carter also of the home and one sister, Amanda Garrett of Big Stone Gap, Va. and one nephew, Dylan Brian Laster. She is also survived by a special cousin, Jessica Crabtree and special friend, Renae Hammonds Skidmore.

The funeral will be held at 3:00 PM Tuesday, April 19th. 2011 in the sanctuary of the Province Funeral Home in Pennington with Dr. Kenneth Ellis officiating.

Visitation will be from 2:00 PM Tuesday until time of the service. Burial will follow at the Millers Chapel Cemetery in Jonesville, Va.

Margie Lee Beach, a resident of Appalachia, Va. was born here in Lee County, Va. on Sunday, August 7, 1932 and passed away on Tuesday, April 19, 2011 at the Lee Regional Medical Center at the age of 78. She was preceded in death by her husband, Homer Beach, her parents, Charlie and Rosa Poteet Bryant and two sisters.

Margie was a housewife, a foster grandparent and had lived most of her life in Lee County and was of the Baptist faith. She is survived by one son, Scott Beach of Appalachia, Va. and one daughter, April Hubbard of Appalachia, Va.

Margie is also survived by three grandchildren, Erin Beach, Jessica and Kelsey Hubbard, one brother, Lloyd Bryant, three sisters, Lorene Smullens of Maryland, Virginia Burke of Jonesville, Va. and Louise Brooks of Kettering, Ohio. Also, special niece, Betty Jean Boldman and several other nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be held at 8:00 PM Thursday, April 21, 2011 with Garrett Lee officiating.

Visitation will be from 6:00 PM until time of the service.

The graveside service will be held at 11: AM Friday at the Ball cemetery, Jonesville, Va.

Family and friends are asked to meet at the funeral home at 10 oclock to go to the cemetery. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Frankie Oaks of Huber Heights, Ohio was born in Pennington Gap, Va. on Saturday, April 3, 1943 and passed away Sunday, April 17, 2011 at the Hospice of Dayton at the age of 68 years.

Frankie had been a homemaker and of the Baptist Faith. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Oaks in 2001, her parents, Franklin and Ellen Haynes Lewis and several brothers and sisters.

Frankie is survived by her daughter, Carolyn Ellis and husband, Johnnie of Huber Heights, Oh., one granddaughter, Bridget Nicole Ellis of Huber Heights, Oh., one grandson, J.D. Ellis and wife, Sarah of Huber Heights, Oh., two great-grandchildren, Jackson and Lilly Ellis both of Huber Heights, Oh., one sister, Opal Burden of Pennington Gap, Va., two sisters-in-law, Georgia Thompson of Big Stone Gap, Va. and Irma Bush of Dayton, Oh., one special niece, Barbara Jones of Pennington Gap, Va. and several other nieces and nephews.

Derryl Short of Duffield, Va. was born in Ft. Worth, Texas on Tuesday, May 11, 1943 and passed away, Thursday, April 21, 2011 at the Disabled American Veterans Medical Center in Mountain Home, TN at the age of 67 years.

Derryl was a Veteran of the US Navy during the Vietnam War and was a disabled Veteran. He was also of the Baptist Belief. He was preceded in death by his wife, Judy Short in 1996, his parents and one brother.

Derryl is survived by his brothers and sisters-in-law, father-in-law, Ollie W. Freeman of Dryden, Va. and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral service will be held at 8:00 PM Saturday, April 23, 2011 at the Province Funeral Home Sanctuary in Pennington Gap, Va. with Michael Gunn officiating.

Visitation will be from 6:00 PM Saturday until the time of the service.

The graveside service will be at 1:00 PM Monday, April 25, 2011 at the Freeman Cemetery in the Big Hill Community of Pennington Gap, Va.

Charles Creed (Buck) Maness was born on Sunday, December 13, 1936 in Lee County, Va. and went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Thursday, April 21, 2011 at the age of 74 years. Mr. Maness was a Christian, a Veteran of the US Army and a retired truck driver. He was preceded in death by his parents, Creed and Mae Maness, two brothers and one sister.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Judith Ann Maness, two daughters, Kimberly Maness and husband, Eugene Waddell and Brittany Maness all of Dryden, Va., sons, Charles W.C. Maness and wife, Angie of New Tazewell, TN and Carl Edward Maness and fiancé, Kim McKinney of Indiana.

Mabel Adean Branson
(July 2, 1939 - April 22, 2011)

Mabel Adean Branson, 71, went to be with her Lord and Savior Friday morning (April 22, 2011) at the Claiborne County Hospital in Tazewell, Tennessee.

A daughter of the late Clyde and Cleo Wolfe, she had lived most of her life in Lee County, Virginia, with the last few years at Tri-State Health and Rehabilitation Center in Harrogate, Tennessee. She was a member of Speaks Chapel United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Herman Branson on January 23, 2010.

Surviving are:

One daughter: Kathy Dixon of Middlesboro, Kentucky

One son: Barry Branson of Roanoke, Virginia

One granddaughter: Amy Dixon of Middlesboro, Kentucky

Two brothers: Esta and Frank Wolfe, both of Vinton, Virginia

Several nieces and nephews

Fred Lee Blaylock
(August 11, 1937 - May 2, 2011)

Fred Lee Blaylock, 73, of Ewing, Virginia, passed away Monday (May 2, 2011) at his residence.

He grew up in Lee County, Virginia, lived in Lansing, Michigan for 28 years, and retired to Lee County 19 years ago. He was retired from General Motors and was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He attended Mount Zion Baptist Church and was a member of the Mount Zion Singers and the D.A.V.

Fred was preceded in death by his father, Gillis Blaylock; his mother, Glessie (Pace) Blaylock; two brothers, Freeman Blaylock and Morrison Blaylock; and one sister, Dorothy Jerlene (Blaylock) Williams.

Surviving are:

His wife: Ruth Blaylock of Ewing, Virginia

Two sons: Audie L. Blaylock and wife, Lori of Garrett, Indiana and Eldon R. Blaylock and wife, Laura of St. Augustine, Florida

Vera Hampton of Jonesville, Va. was born in Lee County, Va. on Saturday, November 24, 1928 and passed away Thursday, May 5, 2011 at the Lee Regional Medical Center in Pennington Gap, Va. at the age of 82 years.

Vera and her husband, Earl returned to Lee County 23 years ago after living in Florida for several years. She was a homemaker and a member of the First Baptist Church in Jonesville, Va. She was preceded in death by her parents, Lee and Minnie Newman Sharp and one brother, Hubert Sharp.

Vera is survived by her husband, Earl Hampton of the home, one son, Stephen Hampton of Jacksonville, Fl., one daughter, Dianne Shackelford of Camden, Oh. and four grandchildren, Courtney Hampton, Heather Paynter, Matthew Shackelford and Andrew Shackelford and one great-granddaughter, Cara Paynter.

Vera is also survived by one brother, Sam Sharp and wife, Libby of Nickelsville, Va. and one sister, Selma Poe of Jonesville, Va.

Rev. Bradley Ray Yeary, a resident of Woodway, Va. was born in the Big Hill Comm. on Sunday, October 14, 1923 and departed this life on Friday, May 6, 2011 at the Lee Regional Medical Center in Pennington Gap, Va..He was 87 years old. He was preceded in death by his parents, Conley Trigg & Mattie Woliver Yeary, one infant daughter, Darlene Yeary, 2 brothers, Thomas and Everett Yeary, 2 sisters, Cassie Ward and Lena Bryant.

Bradley served in the US Navy during WW II on the USS Boyd. He has been a minister for the past 59 years, and Pastor of the Woodway Church of God for 35 years where he was a member and also helped organize the Chaplains for Lee Regional Hospital.

Bradley is survived by his wife, Wanda Burkhart Yeary of the home. Two sons, Dennis Yeary and wife Margarett of Castlewood, Va., Larry Yeary and wife, Shirley of Woodway,Va. One daughter, Helen Jones and husband, Howard of Woodway, Va. He is also survived by 7 grandsons, Donnie, Kevin, Matthew, Andrew, Bradley, David and Brian, 6 great-grandchildren and 1 sister, Maudie Edens of Cleveland, Ohio and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be held at 1:00 PM Sunday in the Woodway Church of God in Woodway, Va. with Pastor Cliff Ely officiating. He will be taken to the church one hour before services. Burial will follow in Lee Memorial Gardens, Woodway, Va. Grandsons will serve as pall bearers.

Tipton T.J. Jackson Noe of the Ocoonita Community in Jonesville, Va. was born on Thursday, September 2, 1920 in Lee County, Va. and passed away Saturday, May 7, 2011 at the Lee Regional Medical Center Center in Pennington Gap, Va. at the age of 90 years. He retired as supervisor with the Ford Motor Co. after 25 years. He was a member of the VFW Club and a Veteran of the US Army during W.W.II as a Supply Sergeant. He was preceded in death by his parents William H.C. and Cora Mullins Noe, seven brothers and three sisters.

T.J. is survived by one son Tipton Jackson Noe, Jr. and wife, Vanessa of Dearborn, Mi., four daughters Cora McGinn of Arab Al., Barbara Golden and husband, Victor of Guntersville, Al., Linda Tawil and husband, Bassom of San Antonio, TX and Cynthia Burgan and husband, Charles of Jonesville, Va., nineteen grandchildren, forty one great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Fannie E. Eldridge, 72, of Rose Hill, Virginia, passed away Monday (May 9, 2011) at the Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport, Tennessee.

A lifelong resident of Lee County, Virginia, she was of the Baptist faith.

Edward Pleasant, a resident of Pennington Gap, Va. was born in Pennington Gap on Saturday, February 1, 1947 and passed away Sunday, May 8, 2011 at the home of his daughter, Melissa Williams, at the age of 64 years. He had worked as a carpet installer and was of the Baptist Faith. He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Iona Pleasant, brothers, Willard Pleasant and Melvin Pleasant and one sister, Delora Ruth Pleasant.

Edward is survived by his wife, Rebecca Pleasant of the home, two sons, Edward Pleasant and William Pleasant both of Pennington Gap, Va. and one daughter, Melissa Williams of Pennington Gap, Va., seven grandchildren, two brothers, William Pleasant of Woodway, Va. and Clayton Pleasant of Dryden, Va. and six sisters, Sue Baird of Woodway, Va., Bobbie Mullins of Pennington Gap, Va., Wilma Jean Brooks of Pennington Gap, Va., Mary Alice Eldridge of Sparta, N.C., Patricia Davidson of Big Stone Gap, Va. and Shirley Mae Hopkins of Pennington Gap, Va. Georgia Lorene (Lo) Bishop Tankersley, 89, Dryden, Va. went home to be with her Lord on May 9, 2011.

Lorene was born in Wise County, and moved to Dryden in 1959. Her life was a witness for God and service to others. She poured her heart and life into her husband, her children and her grandchildren, and had a positive impact on the lives of many who feasted at her table.

She was preceded in death by Lawrence Tankersley, her husband of 63 years; a daughter, Barbara (Bobbie) Tankersley Broussard; her parents, Joseph and Ida Miller Bishop; five brothers: Foster, Clyde, Deb, Ken and Claude (Dutch) Bishop and a sister, Marie Bishop Sullivan. She is survived by son, Joseph (Joe Bud) Tankersley and wife, Norma of Dryden; daughter, Trena Miller and husband, Lonnie, Little Rock, AR, and son, Foster (Ram) Tankersley and wife, Cindie, Abingdon; brother, Herbert Bishop, Gueydon, LA; sister, Margaret Gibson, Appalachia; twelve grandchildren, eighteen great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, four special sisters-in-law, many nieces, nephews, friends, and her neighbors: in the Cumberland Wing of Lee Health and Rehabilitation Center.

Vernon Smith, a resident of the Harlan Road Community of Pennington Gap, Va. was born in Elys Creek, Ky. on Thursday, February 24, 1921 and passed away at the home of his daughter, Brenda in Kingsport, Tn on Tuesday, May 17, 2011 at the age of 90 years. He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Nora Miller Smith Hendricks, 2 brothers, Cecil and Arnold Smith and 2 sisters, Lola Smith and Reba Horner.

Vernon worked in construction as a pipe fitter, and was a veteran of the US Army during WW II and was a P.O.W. He was of the Baptist faith. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather.

Vernon is survived by his wife of 64 years, Virginia Thompson Smith of the home. 2 daughters, Brenda Kennedy of Kingsport, Tn. and Linda Sheets and husband Darrell of Kingsport, Tn and his children, Marie Lawson, Houston Sheets and William Sheets of Rogersville, Tn. 2 Grandchildren, Kristen Kennedy of Bishop, Va. and Dean Kennedy of Kingsport, Tn. 3 brothers, Curtis and Bobby Smith of Pennington Gap, Va. and Taylor Smith of Oak Ridge, Tn. Gaynelle Price, 81, of Jonesville, Virginia, passed away Wednesday (May 18, 2011) at the Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport, Tennessee.

A resident of Lee County, Virginia for most of her life, she was a member of Faith Baptist Church in Jonesville, Virginia. She had spent over 25 years in the restaurant business in the Jonesville area. She was a member of the 46’ers and was an avid bowler.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Harrison and Maude Morris; one sister, Juanita Morris; two brothers, Johnny and Bill Morris.

Jonesville, VA

Arvel C.(Benji) Parsons, passed away in Lonesome Pine Hospital in Big Stone Gap, VA on Thursday, May 19, 2011. He was born in Lee County, Va, the son of the late Benjamin Harrison and Bertha S. Parsons. He played baseball in the Old Mountain League.

Decorated with the Purple Heart, Sgt. Parsons served in two wars: Three Campaigns in Northern Italy in WWII and also in Korea. He worked for General Motors in Indianapolis, IN for several years and resided in Lee County for the past 45 years. He was a member of the Mountain Hoedowners Square Dancers.

Arvel was preceded by his sister, June Parsons. Survivors include his nephew, Darrell Musick and wife, Judy, great niece ,Holly Musick all of Berea, KY.

There will be no formal visitation at the funeral home.

Military honors and burial will be conducted on Thursday, May 26, in the Mountain Home National Cemetery in Johnson City ,TN. at 11:00 A. M.

Loraine England Corbin was born Thursday, August 30, 1923 in Fork Ridge, TN, and went home to be with her Savior and Lord and for a grand reunion with her late husband, Roy S. Corbin on Monday, May 30, 2011 at 2:42 PM, at the Lee Regional Medical Center in Pennington Gap, Va. She resided in St. Charles all of her life, was a homemaker. She was a member of the Admant Baptist Church but attended the St. Charles Methodist Church, where her son Rev. Roy Corbin pastored, as long as her health permitted.

She leaves a legacy of assisting with the upbringing of many over the years besides her own children, Jerry (Judy-deceased) of Miamisburg, Ohio, Joyce Rogers (Bob) of Dryden, Rev. Roy Corbin (Ruth), of Hickory Flats, Janice Surber (Doug), of Miamisburg, Ohio and Robert Charles, (Dina), of Wichita, Kansas.

Loraine was blessed with 9 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great grandchildren, one sister, Shirley Elliott of Columbus, GA, 1 brother, Carl England of Coldwater, MI.and a host of many relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Gilbert and Allie England, five brothers, Eulass, Olen, Everett, Ardel, and Homer, three sisters, Roxie King, Evelynn England, and Anna Sue Gulliver.

The funeral service will be held at 7:30 PM Thursday, June 2, 2011 at the Province Funeral Home Sanctuary in Pennington Gap, Va. with Rev. Doug Surber and Rev. Roy Corbin officiating.

Visitation will be from 6:00 PM Thursday, until the time of the service.

The graveside service will be held at 1:00 PM Friday at Lee Memorial Gardens in Woodway, Va.

The family and friends are asked to meet at the funeral home at 12:15 Friday to go to the cemetery.

Reverend Charles L. Copeland, 76, of Maryville Tennessee, formerly of St. Charles Virginia died Monday May 30, 2011 in Maryville.

Born in St. Charles Virginia, he was the son of the late Everette and Bertha Copeland.

Reverend Copeland served his Lord as a minister in the United Methodist Church in the Holston Conference for 42 years serving churches in Southwest Virginia and East Tennessee. He retired in 1999 and made his home in Maryville Tennessee. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Lillian Garber, and 2 infant children. He is survived by his wife, Reita Copeland of Maryville, his daughter, Robin Copeland McCurry and fiancé, Terry Thomas of Friendsville Tennessee, 1 granddaughter, Jessica McCurry and 2 great-grandchildren, Zoi and Zane all of Maryville, a nephew, James Garber of St. Charles and one niece, Kelen Garber Wilson and husband, Reverend Emmett Wilson of Gate City Virginia. He is also survived by his beloved cat Boots.

Visitation will be on Wednesday June 1, 2011 from 5pm-7pm at McCammon Ammon Click Funeral Home in Maryville Tennessee.

Funeral services will be on Thursday June 2, 2011 at 2pm at Grissom Funeral Home in Cleveland Tennessee with Reverend Marvin Howard officiating.

Interment will be on Thursday at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens in Cleveland Tennessee.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Holston United Methodist Home for Children, 404 Holston Drive Greenville Tennessee 37743.

Anna Hester, 84, of Rose Hill went home to be with Jesus Sunday, June 05, 2011 at Lee Regional Medical Center.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Emil & Anna Jorde and husband, Edward Jackson Hester.

Frankfort, In/Rose Hill, Virginia

Mazil Cheek, 67, of Frankfort, Indiana and formerly of Rose Hill, Virginia passed away Tuesday, June 7, 2011 at St. Vincent Hospice, Indianapolis, Indiana.

She was born September 5, 1943 in Rose Hill to parents, John Morgan and Catherine Elizabeth (Martin) Cheek.

Mazil was a graduate of Thomas Walker High School. She had lived in Frankfort for 35 years, working at Federal Mogul for over 30 years. She enjoyed being with her family.

She is survived by:

Daughter: Lisa (Gilley) Lawson of Hamilton, OH

4 sisters: Louella (Roy) Ray of Rose Hill, VA; Benny Lou Gibson of Rose Hill, VA; Betty (Buford) Lemens of Rose Hill, VA; and Virginia (R C) Wilder of Cincinnati, OH

2 brothers: June Cheek of Rose Hill, VA and Jimmy (Pat) Cheek of Tennessee
6 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren

Visitation will be from 9 – 11 a.m. Saturday, June 11th at Arney-Mullins Funeral Home in Rose Hill. Graveside service will follow at the Cheek Family Cemetery, Rose Hill, VA.
