Boyd Stewart Jr.
(September 1, 1938 - January 6, 2013)

Pennington Gap, VA Boyd Stewart, age 74 known by most people as Junior, fell asleep on January 6, 2013 and woke up in the arms of his Savior after a long-courageous 14 year battle with Cancer.

Junior was one of the friendliest and funniest men that you could ever meet and was an inspiration to many through his strong will and encouragement even in his own time of sickness. He never met a stranger. He worked hard all of his life and was an excellent provider for his family. He was known by many as the "Sears Repairman" for 25 years. He raised his family in church and was faithful to the House of God, where he served the Lord for many years. During his retirement years "He loved to stir up trouble" at McDonalds, Hardees, and B J Motors where he had many friends. He was preceded in death by his father, Boyd Stewart, Sr., his mother, Hallie Stewart: One brother, R.L. Stewart, and one sister, Ruth Cosby. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Joyce Stewart of the home. One daughter, Penny Fleenor and husband, Joe, one son, Shane Stewart and wife April of Jonesville, VA. He had four very special grandchildren that kept him going through all the tough times: Adreanne Bailey, Jacob, Micah and Jaydan Stewart. One step-granddaughter, Jessica Fleenor. He had a very special friend, Doug Parkey whom he loved like a son, and a host of many other friends and relatives.

Family will receive friends from 5 until 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 8, 2013 at the Sturgill Funeral Home in Pennington Gap, VA with service to follow with Pastor Josh Osteen. Special music will be provided by John and Maegan Rhaeside and Ronnie McFarland.

Burial will be on Wednesday, January 9, 2013 at 11:00 a. m. in the Powell Valley Cemetery in Dryden, VA.

In lieu of flowers, Junior asked for memorials be made to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, P.O. Box 2151, 501 St Jude's Place, Memphis, TN 38101-2151. Edward Holmes of Keokee, VA was born in Lee County, VA on Tuesday, October 24, 1939 and passed away Monday, January 7, 2013 at the Lee Regional Medical Center in Pennington Gap, VA at the age of 73 years. He retired as a coal miner and was a member of the Hoover Hill Church. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Holmes, father and mother, Willie Holmes, Sr. and Pearl Homes, three sisters Goldy Collins, Janie Johnson and Louise Pippin and one brother Willie Holmes, Jr. Edward is survived by his wife, Shirley Holmes of the home, one son, Charles Ray Holmes of Keokee, VA, one brother, CB Holmes and wife, Patty of Keokee, VA, two sisters, Martha White and husband, John of Keokee, VA and Rosalee Shaver and husband, Bobby of Richmond, VA.

The funeral service will be held at 8:00 PM Thursday, January 10, 2013 at the Province Funeral Home Sanctuary in Pennington Gap, VA with Bruce Brewer officiating.

Visitation will be from 6:00 PM Thursday until the time of the service.

The graveside service will be at 11:00 AM Friday at the Holmes Cemetery in Keokee, VA.

Opal McDowell Surber
(December 11, 1910 - January 8, 2013)

Ewing, Virginia:

Opal McDowell Surber was born on December 11, 1910, in Somerset, Kentucky and went to be with the Lord on Tuesday (January 8, 2013).

She was the oldest of twelve children born to George and Pearl(Fortner) McDowell. She was preceded in death by her parents, nine siblings, one grandchild, and her husband, Welzie B. Surber.

Survivors include four children: Nancy (Robert) Gibson of Ewing, Virginia Joy (Dennis) Fox of Ewing, Virginia Karl (Mary) Surber of Atlanta, Georgia John (Barbara) Surber of Jonesville, Virginia Seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren

She is also survived by two sisters: Lillie Chumley, Speedwell, Tennessee and Edwena Jennings, Tazewell, Tennessee; a sister-in-law, Juanita McDowell and many nieces, nephews and special friends.

Although Mrs. Surber’s life began in Somerset, KY., it also included nine years as a child with her family in Richland, OR, and as a young adult in Claiborne County, TN. Except for three years in Oak Ridge, TN. during World War II, the family home has been in Ewing, Virginia since 1940.

Mrs. Surber was a devoted wife, dedicated mother, caring educator and devout Christian. She was a member of Morgan Memorial United Methodist Church, Rose Hill, VA. where she taught Sunday School for many years.

The family will receive friends on Friday, January 11, 2013, from 5PM until 8PM at Arney-Mullins Funeral Home, Rose Hill, VA. The funeral service will be on Saturday, January 12, 2013, at 11AM at Morgan Memorial United Methodist Church, Rose Hill, VA. with the Rev. Norman Clark officiating. Burial will follow in the Jones Cemetery, Ewing, VA.

The body will lie in state one hour prior to services.

Kyle Edgar Thomas, 72, of Jonesville, Virginia, passed away Tuesday (January 8, 2013) at the Wellmont Bristol Regional Medical Center in Bristol, Tennessee.

A resident of Lee County, Virginia for most of his life, he was of the Baptist faith.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Dewey and Ruby Thomas; one brother, Morgan Thomas; one sister, Helen Sullivan; and one step-son, Terry Hunter.

Pennington Gap, VA Jack Evans, age 72 of the Woodway Community passed away Thursday, January 10, 2013 in the Johnson City Medical Center. He was a lifelong resident of Lee County, the son of the late Cecil and Maxie Evans. He was a former car salesman for Lee Ford in Pennington Gap and was retired from Powell Mountain Coal Company as a supply clerk. He was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church and was also a member of the Masonic Lodge for several years. He is preceded in death by his son, Jeff: sister, Sue Reed and brothers: Randall, Lonnie and Jerry Evans. He is survived by his wife, Shirley Evans of the home. Daughters: Jill Evans of Pennington Gap and Jade Evans Herndon and husband, Don of Johnson City, TN. Grandaughters, Jackie Neff and husband, Chris and Samantha Evans of Jonesville,VA. Theda Jewell Stapleton of Dryden, VA was born in Bonny Blue, VA on Tuesday, November 21 1934 and passed away Friday, January 11, 2013 at the Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport, TN at the age of 78 years. She retired as an R.N. Supervisor at the Green Hill Nursing Home. She was also a member of the Church of God. She was preceded in death by her husband, Sam Stapleton, daughter, Sandra Lewis Stapleton, father, Jess Cleveland McAlister, mother, Nannie Mae McAlister, sisters, Virgie and Cleo, brothers, Bill and Johnny McAlister, brothers-in-law, Charles and Frank.

Theda is survived by one son, Daryl Wayne Stapleton, daughters, Teresa Stapleton McConnell and husband, Stacy, Rita Rogers and husband, Claude, son-in-law Doug Lewis, brothers-in-law, Hobert and Hubert and sister-in-law, Rita Nagle and brothers, Bob and David McAlister.

Loraine Yeary Cole of Jonesville, VA was born Thursday, October 29, 1931 on Wallens Creek and passed away Thursday, January 10, 2013 at Heritage Hall in Big Stone Gap, VA at the age of 81 years. She had worked in the produce department of the West Town Super Market. She was also a member of the Church of God of Prophecy in Jonesville, VA. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Henry Ishmael Yeary and Elmer Cole, an infant daughter, grandson, James Yeary, Jr., parents, Roy and Martha Combs, brothers, Holbert and Sam Combs, sister, Catherine Smith.

Vergia Lee Shepherd Riddle, age 89 of Dryden, VA was born in Keokee, VA on Thursday, May 17, 1923 and departed this life on Sunday, January 13, 2013 at her home in Dryden. She was a homemaker and a member of Sigma Baptist Church. She also enjoyed scrapbooking and making crepe paper flowers. She was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel H. Riddle; infant son, Timothy, grandson, Tony Shubert, sister, Stella Chestnut, brother, Samuel Shepherd, and parents, Robert and Mamie Shepherd.

Vergia is survived by one son, Terry Riddle and wife, Brenda; five daughters, Faye Bocock, Zelma Shubert, Carol Brown and husband, Larry, Kathy Peters and husband, Paul, all of Dryden; Theresa Sankbeil and husband, Bill, of Beckley, WV. Vera Victoria “Vicky” Harber, age 44 of St. Charles, VA was born in Detroit, MI on Wednesday, December 25, 1968 and passed away Sunday, January 13, 2013 at the Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport, TN.

Vicky loved 4-wheeling, hunting ginseng and swimming and she was of the Baptist Faith. She was preceded in death by her father, C.W. Parsons, grandparents, Bill and Vera Robbins and Wheeler and Millie Parsons and one infant brother, Jeffrey Alden Parsons.

Sandra Maxfield Burchell, (Granny) age 70 of Rose Hill formerly of Dryden, VA passed away on January 18, 2013 at her home. She was retired from Frontier Health. Sandra was of the Baptist faith; she was a loving mother, grandmother, sister and aunt. She was preceded in death by her parents, Gray and Lucy Maxfield, sister, Geraldine Artrip, brothers, Ronnie and Doug Maxfield.

Sandra is survived by three daughters, Freda Hill and husband, Rodney of Pennington Gap, VA, Angie Fee and fiancé, Ron Deel of Coeburn, VA, Christy Lee and husband, Dale of Rose Hill, VA. One brother, Wayne Maxfield of Big Stone Gap, VA. 7 grandchildren, Eric Hill and wife, Ashley, Jonathan Hill, Bradley Fee and fiancé, Whitney Lane, Trevor Fee, Tasha Fee, Kimberly Lee and Kamryn. Betty Phyllis Hess Clark, of the Big Hill Community, went to be with the Lord on January 18, 2013 at her residence after a long illness. She was born on Monday, August 7, 1944 in Stickleyville, VA and was of the Baptist faith. She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Demie Hess. Three brothers, Harold, Clifford and Hughie Hess and one granddaughter, Autumn Clark. Also two brother-in-laws, Herman Adams and Robert Mullins.

Surviving is her husband, Billy James Clark of the home. Three daughters, Barbara Scalf and husband Layton of Johnson City, TN. Demie Olinger and husband Oscar Spurlock of Rose Hill, VA and Regina Spivey and husband David of Jonesville, VA. Two sons, Marvin (Doug) Clark, Sr. and wife Rachel of the Big Hill and Gene Clark and wife Christie of Jonesville, VA. 5 grandchildren, Joseph Yeary, Amber Clark, Brandon Clark, Christopher McQueen and Brittany McQueen. Dorothy Edwards of Pennington Gap, VA was born in Lee County, Va on Thursday, August 4, 1921 and departed this walk of life on Saturday, January 19, 2013 at the Wellmont Lee Regional Hospital in Pennington Gap at the age of 91 years.

Dorothy enjoyed sewing and cooking for all of her family and had retired where she had worked in a children’s home. She was also a member of the First Baptist Church in Pennington Gap. She was preceded in death by her husband, Sheron Edwards and her parents, Mac and Mabel Stapleton. She is survived by two brothers, Carl Stapleton and wife, Edwina and Wayne Stapleton and wife, Mary, both of Tampa, FL. Two sisters, Imogene Garcia and husband, Jerry and Ella Chadwell and husband, David, also of Tampa, FL. She is also survived by a host of nieces and nephews and many other friends and family.

Funeral services will be held at 8:00 P.M. Tuesday, January 22, 2013 in the Province Funeral Home Sanctuary in Pennington Gap with Josh Osteen officiating.

Ida Lucille Collins of Jonesville, VA was born in Ewing, VA on Sunday, December 16, 1923 and passed away Monday, January 21, 2013 at Heritage Hall in Big Stone Gap, VA at the age of 89 years. She had worked in a factory making computers and was a member of the Free Pentecostal Church in Rose Hill, VA. She was preceded in death by her parents, Steve and Catherine Daniels, step-son, Bill Long and five sisters and five brothers.

Ida is survived by her step-sons, Howard Long and wife, Thelma of Wayne, MI, Ralph Long and wife, Peggy of Kentucky, step-daughter, Jannette Prater of Harrogate, TN, daughter-in-law, Ann Southgate of Michigan, twelve grandchildren and several great grandchildren, one sister, Polly Long of Michigan and several nieces and nephews.

Ewing, Virginia:

Herbert Sewell Yeary, age 84, of Ewing , Virginia, passed away on Wednesday (January 23, 2013,) at the Middlesboro Appalachian Regional Hospital in Middlesboro, Kentucky.

Mr. Yeary was a lifelong resident of Lee County and a retired truck driver. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Ewing, Virginia. He also served in the United States Army.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Cohleen (Brooks) Yeary, parents, Wiley and Hannah Yeary; six brothers: Tip, Lonnie ,Lawrence, Hubert, Curtis, Sherman and two infant brothers; one sister: Hazel Williams.

He is survived by one son, Terry Edward Yeary of Harrogate, Tennessee; several nieces and nephews and two special cousins, Ethel Chadwell and Vester Dempsey.

Visitation will be from 5pm – 7pm on Friday (January 25, 2013) at the Arney-Mullins Funeral Home Chapel in Rose Hill, Virginia. Funeral to follow at 7:00pm in Arney-Mullins Funeral Home Chapel.

Ovella went to be with the lord on January 26, 2013. She grew up in VIC and Bonny Blue, Virginia. She retired from Bridgestone/Firestone where she worked for over 27 years. She was a member of New Life Christain Church in Noblesville, Indiana. She loved bowling and was a member of the Women's Bowling League. She is survived by daughter, Yvonne Carol Coffman of Delaware, Ohio. Two grandaughters, Heather Kirby (Steve Kirby) of Alexandria Indiana and Rebecca Brown (Travys Brown) of Delaware Ohio. Greatgrandchildren, Mazlin Kirby, Nevaeh Brown, Braylon Brown and Bryson Brown who will join us this summer. Brothers, Jimmy Fleenor, Olan Fleenor and Johnny Fleenor. Sisters, Louise and Shirley Harber. Many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by husband, Herschel Gibson, Parents, George and Edith Fleenor, Brother David Fleenor and Sister Marie Sharp.

Services will be at Province Funeral Home in Pennington Gap, Virginia with visitation on Tuesday, January 29th from 5-8:00 PM and Services on Wednesday at 11:00 AM with Doug Gibson officiating.

Leonard E. “Lightning” Shell, 83, of Jonesville, Virginia, passed away Tuesday (January 29, 2013) at the Wellmont Lee Regional Medical Center in Pennington Gap, Virginia.

A resident of Lee County, Virginia for most of his life, he was a member of Faith Baptist Church in Jonesville, Virginia. Leonard was retired from VDOT and served on the Board of Directors for Farm Bureau.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Joann Shell; his parents, John and Nellie Shell; daughter-in-law, Sheila Shell; an infant daughter, Cynthia Ann Shell; one brother, Walter Shell; and one sister, Ruby Shell.

Surviving are:

One son: Henry Shell and fiancé, Peggy of Jonesville, Virginia

Two daughters: Alice Poteet and husband, Danny of Richmond, Virginia and Nancy Shell of Richmond, Virginia

Mary Brewer of age 86 of Chattanooga, TN was born in Lee County, VA on Friday, April 2, 1926 and passed away Sunday, January 27, 2013 at Hospice Care in Chattanooga. She was a retired cook and was a member of the Mt. Zion Baptist Church and enjoyed quilt making and what-nots. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ed Brewer, son, Bobby Brewer and parents, Gene and Lizzie Mullins.

Ardath Jo Green died February 1, 2013 in Henrico Co, VA. Jo was born on June 24, 1923 in Lee County, VA. She was preceded in death by her parents, John Wallace and Etta Susan Ellison Green, brother, Frederick H. Green. She is survived by special friends, Barbara and Jim Owens and other extended family. Beginning her Navy service during World War II, duty stations included Hunter College, NY; Bainbridge, MD, Norfolk, VA Naval Station; Naval Station, Pensacola, FL; Naval Air Station Memphis, TN. Obtaining the rank of Chief Petty Officer, Jo cherished the opportunities for service that the Navy provided.

Jo and a Miss Baker were the first women to be sworn in as Waves in the Norfolf Naval District of the United States navy. Jo retired after serving 24 years. She was a member of the Richmond Virginia Chapter CDXVII Century, Bermuda Hundred Chapter NSDAR, and a host of other organizations. She was a member of the Sycamore United Methodist Church, Prince George, VA.

Military graveside services will be held at Lee Memorial Gardens in Woodway, VA at 11:00 a. m. February 7, 2013 with Rev. Roger Mathess officiating.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William David (Bud) Baldwin. Her parents, Garfield and Margie Cowan. Also four sister, two brothers and a half sister. She is survived by two sons, Don Baldwin and wife, Eula Faye of Woodway, Virginia and David Baldwin and wife, Rose Mary also of Woodway, Virginia. Juanita Marcum Carroll, 83, of Jonesville, Virginia, passed away Tuesday (February 5, 2013) at the Lee Health and Rehab Center in Pennington Gap, Virginia after a short illness. She resided with her granddaughter, Renee Marcum Flanary and Josh Marcum Smith.

A lifelong resident of Lee County, Virginia, she was a member of Russell Chapel United Methodist Church. She was also a member of the United Methodist Women’s Association.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Ernest and Mossie Johnson; her first husband, Oscar “Rat” Marcum; her second husband, Arden Carroll; one son, Steven Marcum; one brother, Lee Roy Johnson; and one sister, Leota Russell.

Margaret Ruth Bacon, age 80, of Rose Hill Virginia, passed away Saturday (February 9, 2013) at the Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport, Tennessee.

Ruth lived most of her life in Lee County, Virginia and was a member of Morley Memorial United Methodist Church. She was a Sunday School teacher and former president of Flatwoods Ruritan Club.

She was preceded in death by her parents, James Butler and Dora Mae Hounshell Greever and two infant sisters.

She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Morton C. Bacon; one brother, James Henry Greever; nephews, Douglas and George Greever, and one great-nephew, Chance Greever, all of California; three sisters-in-law and three brothers-in-law; several cousins, friends and very special friends, Mike and Becky Day.

Visitation will be Tuesday (February 12, 2013) from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Arney-Mullins Funeral Home in Rose Hill, Virginia.

Ewing, Virginia:

Beverly A. Wilson Cheek, 69, was called to her heavenly home early this morning (February 15, 2013). She always sang “Wonder What They’re Doing in Heaven Today”. She doesn’t have to wonder anymore.

She was a true woman of God who knew how to get a prayer through. She will be missed, but God needed another angel to watch over us.

She was preceded in death by her father, Emmitt D. Wilson,; her mother, Myrtle Bradford Wilson; sister Amalene Wilson and her brothers, Don and Lyle Wilson.

She is survived by her husband, Garland “Duck” Cheek of Rose Hill, Virginia; her son, Tim Cheek and wife Joy of Dryden, Virginia – the light of her life – her grandchildren, Kayley and Carsten Cheek of Dryden, Virginia; Her sister, Theresa “Trish” Wilson of Rose Hill, Virginia; her brothers, O’Neal and Shelby Wilson of Glenburnie, Maryland; Mark (Tony) and Gail Wilson of Tazewell, Tennessee; Kyle and Pam Wilson of Middlesboro, Kentucky; William “Cotton” and Rose Wilson of Taylor, Michigan; Tyrone and Delores Wilson of Ewing, Virginia; sister-in-law, Betty Wilson of Rose Hill, Virginia.

Visitation and her Homegoing service will be held Sunday (February 17, 2013) from 5:00pm -8:00pm. Service beginning at 8:00pm in the Arney-Mullins Funeral Home Chapel in Rose Hill, Virginia. Pastors Rev. Robert Charles Long and Rev. Michael K. Dalton will officiate.

Burial will be on Monday (February 18, 2013) at the Bradford-Daniels Cemetery in Rose Hill, Virginia. Those wishing to attend the graveside service are asked to meet at the funeral home at 1:00pm to go in procession to the cemetery.

Mary Margaret McQueen of Jonesville, VA was born Tuesday, March 7, 1939 and passed away Sunday, February 17, 2013 at the Lee Regional Medical Center in Pennington Gap, VA at the age of 73 years.

Mary had been a caretaker and of the Baptist Faith. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Buford Collins, second husband, Everett McQueen, parents, Shirley and Rose Hopkins, sister, Doris Faye Norman and one niece, Crystal Gail Norman.

Mary is survived by two brothers, Benny Hopkins and wife, Earthel of Jonesville, VA, Jim Hopkins and wife, Joyce of Evant, TX, two sisters, Jearleen Parker of Big Stone Gap, VA and Billy Marcum and husband, Ed of Rose Hill, VA and several nieces, nephews and friends.

The funeral service will be held at 8:00 PM Tuesday, February 19, 2013 at the Province Funeral Home Sanctuary in Jonesville, VA with Brother Jim Myers officiating.

Visitation will be from 6:00 PM Tuesday until the time of the service.

The graveside service will be at 11:00 AM Wednesday, February 20, 2013 at the ???????? cemetery.
