Wilma Jean (Hartsock) Stapleton of Pennington Gap, VA was born in Lee County on Tuesday, May 23, 1967 and went to be with the Lord on Thursday, April 25, 2013 at the Wellmont Lee Regional Medical Center in Pennington Gap at the age of 45 years. She had worked as a seamstress for a sewing factory, a homemaker and her grandkids were the love of her life. She was also of the Christian faith.

Wilma was preceded in death by her parents, Gene and Menda Ellie Hartsock. Paternal grandparents, Nathan and Bertha Hartsock. Maternal grandparents, Lawrence and Mae Castle. One brother, Robert Wayne Hartsock and one nephew, Richard Allen Hartsock. She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Bertha Hartsock and Jeffery Bridges. One son and daughter-in-law, Jimmy and Jessica Stapleton. Three grandchildren, Chyanne Bridges, Menda Bridges and Nicholas Stapleton. Six brothers, Lester Castle and wife, Dorothy of Woodway, VA. Mike Hartsock of Lee County, VA. Donald Hartsock of Pennington Gap, VA. Ricky Hartsock of Indianapolis, IN. Darrell Hartsock and wife, Audrey of Pennington Gap, VA and Matthew Hartsock and wife, Brenda of Jonesville, VA. Special friend, Gary Berry. Also many nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Monday, April 29, 2013 in the Province Funeral Home Sanctuary in Pennington Gap.

Burial will follow at Lee Memorial Gardens in Woodway, VA.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Visitation will be held from 6:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. Sunday, April 28, 2013. Thelma Long Neal, 78, of Rose Hill passed away Friday, May 3, 2013 at Tri State Health and Rehabilitation Center in Harrogate, TN.

Jonesville, VA

Lorene Terry, 99, passed away Sunday (May 5, 2013) at Lee Health and Rehabilitation Center in Pennington Gap, VA.

She had lived in Lee County most of her life and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Jonesville. She was a lifetime member of the Lee County Community Hospital auxiliary and served 25 years as a volunteer. She was a member and past worthy matron of Powell Valley Chapter #13 Order of the Easter Star in Pennington Gap, Virginia. She was a member and past noble of the Lee Rebekah Lodge #33 of Jonesville, was a member of Mountain Empire Older Citizens (MEOC). She was crowned senior citizen queen of the Lee County Fair.

She credits her longevity to living right pleasing God.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Hillery Terry; daughter, Wanda Noe; parents, John and Lillie Mae Carroll; three sisters, Gaynelle Baumgardner, Edith Bolin and Mildred Smith; two brothers, John B. Carroll, Jr. and James E. Carroll and two grandchildren.

She is survived by:

2 daughters: Marlene Mott of Columbus, OH and Drucilla Wolliver of Eustis, FL

3 sons: Douglas Terry and wife, Dolores of Eastlake, OH, Gary Terry and wife, Sue of Concord, OH and Phillip Terry of Peoria, Arizona

Anita Young Taylor

Anita Young Taylor, 60, died peacefully on May 4, 2013 at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina.

She was a lifelong resident of Ewing, Virginia and was employed by the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers for 18 years.

She was preceded in death by her father, Wheeler Young; her mother, Anna Mae Young; and sisters, Lois Browning and Johnna Young.

Surviving are:

Her husband of 42 years: John R. Taylor of Ewing, Virginia

Son: Kenneth Taylor and wife, Jennifer of Wake Forest, North Carolina

Her two precious grandchildren: Benjamin and Abigail Taylor

Siblings: Fred Young, Bill Young, Dennis Young, and Judy Young

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Arney-Mullins Funeral Home in Rose Hill, Virginia.

Joseph Michael Klass of the Woodway Community in Pennington Gap, VA was born Tuesday, June 26, 1928 and passed away Wednesday, May 8, 2013 at the Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport, TN at the age of 84 years. He had been an auto mechanic and a volunteer fireman with the Kingston Penn Fire Dept., he aslo loved to fish.

Joseph was also a Veteran of WWII and a member of St. Johns in Pennsyvania and the Holy Spirit Church in Lee County, VA. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lorraine Klass, parents, Alex and Mary Klass and several brothers and sisters.

Joseph is survived by two sons, Joseph Klass and wife, Donna and Richard Klass and wife, Paula all of PA, and a loving daughter, Patricia Bledsoe and husband, Kenny and their children, Allen and Joe all of Pennington Gap, VA, ten grandchildren and three great-grandchildren and one brother, Edward Klass and wife, Josephine and their four children all of Livingston, TX.

Mr. Klass was cremated and memorial service will be held in Kingston, PA at a later date. Province Funeral Home of 42098 E. Morgan Ave. Pennington Gap, VA is in charge of the local arrangements.

She had been a homemaker and a member of the Calvary Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Rufus Stewart, her parents, Ben and Pearl Harber, and brothers Orbin, Fred, Eugene, Billy Joe and Everett Harber and sisters, Pauline Daniel and Marie Howard.

Ilene is survived by one son, Greg Edens, one daughter, Regenia Massey and husband, Steve, four grandchildren, Nathan Edens, Jennifer Edens Evans and husband, Eric, Chris Massey and Jonathan Massey and wife, Lisa, and four great-grandchildren, Claire and Marianne Evans and Taylor and Lauren Massey, sisters Doris Ann Brown and husband, William T. and Stella Payne, brother-in-law, Harmon Daniel and many nieces and nephews.

Amy Lynn Hughes age 42, of the Skaggs Hill Community of Pennington Gap, VA was born in Harlan, KY on Monday, November 16, 1970 and passed away Thursday, May 9, 2013 at the Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport, TN. She was the Valedictorian at Keokee High School Graduating Class of 1989.

Amy had worked for the U.S. Postal Service as a mail carrier servicing Route 3 and was a member of the Victory Apostolic Church in Pennington Gap, VA. She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Flora Davis and Martin Davis and Curtis Rowe.

Amy is survived by her husband, Jamie Hughes of the home, her children, Ethan Harley Hughes and Madison Paige Hughes both of the home, her parents, Charles (Bert) and Alma Davis of the Scaggs Hill Community, one sister, Mary Kilgore and husband, Bobby of Church Hill, TN, her grandmother, Ruby Depew of Pennington Gap, VA and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and other family and friends.

Wilma Morefield of Harrogate, TN was born in Douglas, GA on Wednesday, March 29, 1933 and passed away Saturday, May 11, 2013 at the U.T. Hospital in Knoxville, TN at the age of 80 years.

Willa had been a military wife, a homemaker and was of the Baptist Faith. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, George Morefield, Sr. and one son, Gregory Lee Morefield.

Dryden, VA Marion Clarkston age 92 passed away peacefully at his home on Thursday May 16, 2013. He was a lifelong resident of Lee County and was a Veteran of WWII serving in the United States Army. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Rejeanna Quillen.

Survivors include his wife: Hortense Clarkston, two daughters: Marilyn Hill and Dorinda Haynes. 7 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.

The family will receive friends on Friday, May 17, from 5 until 7 at Sturgill Funeral Home in Pennington Gap.

Military graveside services will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday morning in the Clarkston-Kilgore Cemetery in the Seminary community with Rev. Pennington Gap, VA

Pauline (Lucy) Scalf was born March 18, 1928 in Inman, VA to the late Charles and Jessie Willis Scalf. She departed this life at the age of 85 on May 17, 2013. She lived all her life in Lee County, VA. She was a joy to all who knew her. She loved having visitors; her face would always light up to see her family. Her hobby was "knitting", pulling the rubber out of elastic.

Pauline is survived and dearly loved by her cousin, Ruth Willis Clark who was like a second mother to her and had resided with her for the past 18 years. Ruth's children who considered her their sister, Gail, Mary Jane, Carolyn, Joann, Kathy, Phyllis, Ruby, Dennis and Diane and a host of other cousins.

Family will receive friends on Sunday, May 19, from 1 until 2:00 p.m. with funeral services following with Michael Gunn officiating.

Max Chance, age 84, died at home Tuesday morning.He was born in the Flatwoods community on May 25, 1928, the son of Charles and Dollie Beatrice Kyle Chance. He loved Lee County, Va. and had many close friends and family there; and his heart always belonged to Lee County. He attended and was a lifelong member of the Flatwoods Methodist Church. He was an army veteran and served during the Korean War.

Max graduated from Flatwoods High School and enjoyed attending his high school reunions each year. He received a bachelor’s degree from Lincoln Memorial University and a Master’s degree from Ball State University, Muncie, Indiana.

Max worked for several years in the engineering department for Avco Corporation at Cape Canaveral, Florida where he worked on sending NASAs first rockets into space. He taught high school and coached cross-country and basketball in Indiana at Hamilton Southeastern before moving his family to Lee County where he taught at Flatwoods High School. One of his greatest joys was coaching men’s varsity basketball, baseball and cross-country. But an even greater passion was knowing and working with the individuals that played on these teams. He took a personal interest in his players and considered many to be like family. He ended his teaching career at Lee High School.

Max retired from teaching and coaching and spent time with his wife, children, and grandchildren. He loved traveling and visiting friends and family in his little red mini-cooper. Max lived life to the fullest and enjoyed his many conversations with his friends. He was very proud of his daughters, Susan and Debbie, and especially his grandchildren. Max will be deeply missed and always loved by his family.

Survivors include his two daughters, Susan Chance Chipouras and husband, Jim of Charlotte, N.C. and Debbie Chance of Morristown, Tn. four grandchildren, John and Steven Chipouras, Katie and Sarah Branham; and many dear friends, loving nieces and nephews and family. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marie Beaty Chance and his parents, Charles and Dollie Chance. Three brothers, Jack, Robert and Pete, one infant sister, Margaret, and one nephew Petie Chance.

Visitation will be at Province Funeral Home beginning at 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Friday, May 24 with the funeral following at 7:00 p.m., Friday with Rev. Greg Cartwright officiating.
The graveside service will be held at 11:00am Saturday, May 25 in the Chance-Edds Cemetery in Chance's Chapel.

Family and friends are asked to meet at the cemetery at 10:45am Saturday for the service. Pearl J. Cox, age 93, of Kingsport, TN went to be with the Lord On Sunday, May 26, 2013 at Church Hill Health Care and Rehab.

Pearl graduated from LMU in 1937 with a Bachelor of Science Degree. She taught school in Lee County, VA for 27 years before retiring.

Pearl was preceded in death by her parents, John Wesley and Margaret Vesta Shular Johnson: her husband, Raymond Cox: loving daughter, Jayne Ann Cox Johnston: sisters: Frances Johnson and June Brown: and brother, Carl Johnson. Kenneth Boyd Ingle on May 26, 2013, God in His Infinite Wisdom saw fit to call Kenneth B. Ingle to his Heavenly Home. He was born in Pennington Gap, the son of the late Herman and June Ingle. Kenneth had worked many years as a truck driver in the construction business.

Survivors include: his wife, Irene Wallace Ingle of Occonita. Two daughters: Alisha and husband Jackie Hall of Pennington Gap, VA. Amanda and husband Tom Phillips of Jonesville, VA, One son, Kevin Ingle and wife, Diane of Pennington Gap, VA. Roy Glenn Watson of Jonesville, VA was born in Jonesville on Wednesday, April 6, 1932 and passed away Tuesday, May 28, 2013 at the Lonesome Pine Hospital in Big Stone Gap, VA at the age of 81 years. He was a graduate of Jonesville High School. He loved camping, gardening and building things.

Roy retired as a police officer for the town of Jonesville and was in the U.S. Army for 22 years where he was a Sergeant First Class and served in Okinawa. When he was discharged, he then went into the National Guard where he served as mess sergeant for a number of years. He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Cleo Watson and one brother, James Watson, Jr.

Roy is survived by his beloved and devoted wife, Barbara Watson of the home, one daughter, Teresa Watson of Jonesville, VA and one granddaughter, Savanna Parsons of Jonesville, VA. He is also survived by one brother, John Doyle Watson and wife, Priscilla of Hunnington Beach, CA, two sisters, Gladys Anderson of Jonesville, VA and Susie Watson of Kingsport, TN, special nieces, Linda Anderson and Donna Ingle, special nephews, Brandon and Austin Ingle and Randall Kimberlin, special sister-in-law, Nancy Kimberlin and special friend, Fuzz Cluesman.

A graveside service will be held at 10:30 AM Friday, May 31, 2013 at the Watson Family Cemetery on Rt. 70 in Jonesville, VA with Paul Davis Jr. officiating.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Pearl Clifton, great-grandson, Grayson Marcum, parents, Marion and Ida Spangler, two brothers, Earl Spangler and Glen Spangler, sister, Monette Carroll and a son-in-law, Dennis Marcum.

Pauline is survived by two daughters, Linda Stafford and husband, Clarence and Penny Marcum all of Jonesville, VA. Her grandchildren, Lisa Lewis and husband, Travis, Debbie Woliver and husband, Mark, Jody Stafford, Tammy Marcum, Jason Marcum and wife, Regina all of Jonesville, VA and Matthew Marcum and wife, Mary Helen of Rose Hill, VA, fifteen great-grandchildren, one brother, Ray Spangler and wife, Lorene of Ohio, two sisters, Ruby Jaynes of Rose Hill, VA and Edith Turner of Knoxville, TN and several nieces and nephews.

Gary L. Taylor, age 56, of Kingsport, Tennessee, formerly of Dryden, Virginia, born January 1, 1957 in Pennington Gap, VA and passed away Monday, May 27, 2013 at Indian Path Medical Center following a long battle with lung disease.

A longtime resident of Lee County, Virginia, Gary was a former coal miner and truck driver, most recently driving for Gus Hill Trucking Company, Hillsville, Virginia, until his health declined. He was an avid classic car enthusiast, owning several of his own and working on several others. He was a collector of Hot Wheels and model cars. He was preceded in death by his parents, Dora Belle and Walter Taylor, birth mother, Lola Taylor, all of Dryden, Virginia, and sister Rama Jean Kegley of Glen Burnie, Maryland He is survived by his wife, Rosemary Taylor and granddaughters, Katlynne; Lacey; and Marissa, all of the home. Daughter Keila Taylor. Daughter Cynthia Taylor Robbins and husband, Christopher of Kingsport. Granddaughters, Jasmine Camille and Doraleigh Isabella Robbins of Kingsport and three step-grandchildren, Bret Blevins, Josh Robbins, and Adam Robbins. Adopted daughters, April Dawn Lawson, of Johnson City, TN and Tina Marie Lewis of Woodway, VA. Grandchildren, Matthew Wesley Lawson, of Johnson City, Tennessee, and Miriam, Adrian, and Diego Estrada of Woodway, Virginia. One sister, Betty Bowen, of South Carolina. Special nephew, Ted Kegley of Washington State. He is also survived by his K9 companions Jet, Molly, and Bruno. He was also known as Dad and Papaw to countless others over the years. Walter ( Jay W.) McFarland of Gate City, Virginia and formerly of Ben Hur, Virginia was born in Ben Hur on Wednesday, February 2, 1944 and passed away on Friday, May 31, 2013 at his home in Gate City after a courageous battle with cancer at the age of 69 years. He was retired from commercial maintenance and had worked at Holston Valley Hospital. He was also a U.S. Navy Veteran and was of the Baptist faith.

Walter was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Fannie McFarland and one brother, Jimmy McFarland. He is survived by his loving wife of 31 years, Wanda McFarland of the home, one son Walt McFarland of Indianapolis, Indiana and two step-sons, Scott Bailey of Johnson City, Tennessee and Terry Bailey of Denver, Colorado, three grandchildren and 2 step-grandchildren. He is also survived by one brother, J.T. Lawson of Rolla, Missouri and two sisters, Jean Teston of Jacksonville, Florida and Betty Sprinkle of Ohio.

Sue Baird of Woodway, VA was born in Occonita on Tuesday, November 1, 1938 and passed away on Friday, May 31, 2013 at the Johnson City Medical Center in Johnson City, TN at the age of 74 years.

Sue was a homemaker and a member of the Pentecostal Church of God in Pennington Gap, VA. She was preceded in death by two sons, Donnie Gale and Elmer Ray Baird, one daughter, Lethia Michelle Fields. Her parents, Curtis and Iona Pleasant and one brother, Edward Pleasant.

Sue is survived by her husband, Clayton Baird of the home. Two sons, Logan Wayne Baird of Bristol, VA and William Clayton Baird and wife, Katie of Dryden, VA. William Lee (Bill) Miller of Pennington Gap, VA was born in Pennington Gap, VA on Wednesday, March 14, 1945 and passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his loving family, on Monday, June 3, 2013 at the age of 68 years. He retired as a coal miner after 32 years and was a member of the UMWA Local #1405. He was a member of the First Christian Church. For Bill, God was first and because of that he showed great love to his family, friends and neighbors. He enjoyed cooking, gardening, carpentry work, fishing and hunting, and singing with the group Mended Hearts Quartet. He was a volunteer for the Pennington Gap fire department and an honorary member of the Lee County rescue squad both of which he served for over 20 years. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Lura Miller, one brother, Johnny Miller, sister, Sherry Ely and one nephew, T.J. Ely.

Pennington Gap, VA Alice Moore Barker, age 88, of Pennington Gap, VA went to be with the Lord on Friday morning, June 7, 2013 at Lee Nursing and Rehab Center in Pennington Gap after an extended illness. She was born in Pennington Gap on March 15, 1925 and was a lifelong resident of Lee County.

Alice worked at the Nuclear Plant in Oak Ridge, TN during WWII. Later she worked at the Lee Theater, was a sales clerk at May & Company Department Store, then worked as a telephone operator with the C&P Telephone Company in Pennington Gap. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and a loving sister. She was a member of Belcher's Chapel Baptist Church.

Alice was preceded in death by her parents: Worley and Ora Moore: Three sisters, Nettie Lee and Billie Marie Moore and June Moore McFarland and one brother, Jerry Moore. Three nephews and 3 brothers-in-law.

She is survived by her loving husband of 55 years, Theodore Barker of Pennington Gap, VA, One son, Jeff Barker and wife Ann of, Dryden, VA. Two grandchildren, Desiree Alexander and fiance Kevin Satterfield and Chelsea Barker and fiance Richard Evans. Three grandsons, Jadon and Colton Alexander, and Bryson Evans all of Dryden, VA. Two brothers, J.C. Moore and wife, Agnes of West Carrollton, Ohio, Wayne Moore and wife Pat of Noblesville, IN. Bruce Ridings, age 78, of Spring City, Tennessee passed away Sunday, June 16, 2013 at his home after a lengthy illness. He was born November 8, 1934 in Pennington Gap, Virginia. Bruce loved car racing and enjoyed watching Nascar. He also had a love for horses. Bruce was a United States Army veteran who served his country proudly. He was a retired truck driver, last working for IML Trucking and AB Freight. He was also a member of the Teamsters Union Local Chapter 957. Preceded in death by his parents, Julius and Haley Pennington Ridings; brother, Billy Joe Ridings.

Wilma Beatrice Baker of the Left Hand Poor Valley Community in Pennington Gap, VA was born Wednesday, September 3, 1947 and passed away, Wednesday, June 19, 2013 at her home surrounded by family, at the age of 65 years. She retired as a CNA Med Tech and was a member of the Belchers Chapel Church. She was preceded in death by and infant son, David Baker, her parents, David and Beatrice Lancaster and one sister, Donna Ketron.

Wilma is survived by her husband, Auther Baker of the home, three daughters, Ruth Baker of Dryden, VA, Angie Sturgill and husband, Randall of the Left Hand Poor Valley Community and Tammy Baker of Dryden, VA, two grandchildren, Nicole Sturgill and Kiara Thomas, one brother, David (Toby) Lancaster and wife, Betty of Pennington Gap, VA and a special niece, Christie Ketron of Pennington Gap, VA.

A memorial service will be held at 4:00 PM Saturday, June 22, 2013 at the Province Funeral Home Sanctuary in Pennington Gap, VA with Paul Davis, Jr. officiating.

Sue Parkey Rosenbalm
May 26, 1930 - June 21, 2013

Sue Parkey Rosenbalm, Kingsport, TN and formally from Ewing, VA, entered into her heavenly home on Friday, June 21, 2013.

She was born May 26, 1930 at Ewing, VA, the daughter of the late Ikey Parkey and Gladys Noe Parkey. Mrs. Rosenbalm was a member of the Rose Hill Christian Church and was retired from the educational system in Lee County, having taught school at Thomas Walker High School, a counselor and principal at the Lee County Career and Technical Center.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Kyle P. Rosenbalm, and son, Stephen Rosenbalm.

Survivors include one sister and brother-in-law, Doris and Dwight Stiles; two nieces: Susan (Darrell) Cope and Tina (George) Montgomery; six great nieces and nephews, and seven great - great nieces and nephews. She also leaves a host of friends, church family and three wonderful caretakers: Geraldine Folden, Freda Salyers, and Rhonda Sands.

Visitation will be from 2 to 4 PM Sunday at the Robinette Funeral Home in Rose Hill, VA with services in the chapel at 4:00 PM with the Rev. Bryan Gunter officiating. Music will be provided by Betty Smith. Burial will follow the services at the Ewing Cemetery. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Rose Hill Christian Church or the Sue P. Rosenbalm Scholarship Fund at Union College.

Emma Rose Scott "Scotty" Oatts
May 13, 1919 - June 22, 2013

Emma Rose Scott “Scotty” Oatts, age 94, of Jonesville, VA, passed away Saturday, June 22, 2013 at Wellmont Lee Regional Medical Center. She was born on May 13, 1919 in Caldwell County, KY to the late Enoch Henry and Sadie Scott. She was a homemaker and a member of the First United Methodist Church of Jonesville. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Lewis H. Oatts, seven brothers and nine sisters.

Emma is survived by two sons, Lewis Scott Oatts and wife Sherry of Pennington Gap, VA and Shelby H. Oatts and wife Donna of Portland, OR, and four grandchildren, Nicholas Scott Oatts of St. Louis, MO, Spencer L. Oatts of Chattanooga, TN, Trevor Oatts of Portland, OR and Tannis Rose Oatts of Portland, OR.

Due to family members being out of town, the family will receive friends from 11 until Noon Saturday, June 29, 2013 at Robinette Funeral Home of Jonesville. The funeral service will follow at 12:00 noon with Rev. Layne Pennington officiating. The committal service and interment will follow in Lee Memorial Gardens. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to First United Methodist Church of Jonesville, 200 Church Street, Jonesville, VA 24263.
