The Soviet Union entered the Olympic tournament as heavy favorites, having won every ice hockey gold medal but one since 1956, the lone exception being the gold won by the United States team in Squaw Valley, California, in 1960.
In head-to-head matchups against the United States the cumulative score over that period was 28-7.
In exhibitions that year, Soviet club teams had gone 5–3–1 against National Hockey League (NHL) teams, and a year earlier the Soviet national team had routed the NHL All-Stars 6–0 to win the Challenge Cup.
Of the 20 players who eventually made the final USA Olympic roster, Buzz Schneider was the only one left over from the 1976 Olympic team.
The last exhibition game was against the Russians in Madison Square Garden on February 9, 1980. The Soviets crushed the Americans 10-3.
Of the 20 players on the US team, 12 eventually played in the NHL. Five of them went on to play over 500 NHL games, and three would play over 1,000 NHL games.

Yah, yah we know.
We also know the US team was the only undefeated team in the tournament and they beat the Czechs 7-3 before the beat the Soviets.
So,was the whole thing a miracle?
They were clearly the second best team in the tournament and they had a hot goalie who upset the Russians.
That's all there is to it.
This years team is no different. They are not the best team but if the goalie stays hot, they will at least win a medal.

How's that differ from any other hockey tournament? That's how teams win them. It doesn't diminish the fact that that it was the biggest win/upset in US hockey history. What's up with that?

Posted February 25th, 2010 09:01 AM IP We also know the US team was the only undefeated team in the tournament. (This is untrue)
In group play, in their first game against favoured Sweden, Team USA earned a dramatic 2–2 draw by scoring with 27 seconds left after pulling goalie Jim Craig for an extra attacker.
Plus there was a chance they might not even medal before playing the last game! In fact, the medal round was a round-robin, not a single elimination format like. Under Olympic rules at the time, the group game with Sweden was counted along with the medal round games versus the Soviet Union and Finland so it was mathematically possible for the United States to finish anywhere from 1st to 4th.
Glad I could set the story straight for you PB! Thanks for playing.

That's my point.
Look ,i I know it goes "against the grain" and if folks want to slobber over the 1980 team for the rest of eternity, fine.
It was a big win and a big upset but if we are all around for the 40th anniversary of this "miracle" I hope I dont have to listen Jim Craig and Mike Eruzioni talk about again.
Maybe just maybe it can be put in perspective by then and we can lose all the miracle hype..which is all it is.

So really your problem is with hockey as a sport, rather than the 1980 Olympic team? What's up with that?

And no Govs, I just don' t like hyperbol hype.

Fixed to align more with what PB really feels.
Really quite a story is really.... well, quite a story. PB's posts going forward should end with "hey, the goalie had a bunch of nice saves". What's up with that?

Posted February 25th, 2010 02:01 PM IP It is interesting how folks need to cling to the
" Miracle" angle.
Even the Godless Govs.
Hot goalie, a little luck and big time talent is all it was.

Posted February 25th, 2010 02:45 PM IP Be kind to Cb.
The 1980 team was undefeated but tied.
But whatever, they had the best record of any team and they blew away a lot of opponents including the Czechs.
If it wasn't for poor officiating they would have beaten the Russins 4-1.
Those are the facts, not hype.
Now, I know. Al Micheals said it was a miracle so we should all follow along but I say its was then and continues to be way over hyped.

It's a miracle that they were able to get the building hosed down in time to play the semis the next day. What's up with that?
