This season will be bellwether for him. Continue in the middle of the pack and lose in round 1 of the WCHA's and I would think he'll be asked to resign. If the team gets to the Final 5 and wins a game, I think Maturi will keep him.

Since his illness, there doesn't seem to be much fire in "The Don".

Its reflected in the players as well....

Who do you geniuses think should be coach then - the Wooger? Lucia is a close, personal friend of mine and he didn't get stupid overnight. You guys thought he was the cat's pajamas when he brought the U a National Title - what happened.

The Don got sick and lost his fire. It seems to reflect in the players.

Firing a great assistant didn't help either...

That's bull****. He gets the best players and they leave early and he's caught with his pants down. He'll learn that the game has changed and will start taking "lesser" players that are grinders and role players and he'll return the proud tradition that you dopes are used to. Further, the landscape has become much more competitive than it used to be with more parity than ever before.

Well, it's evidently not happening any time soon.

I mean, when Maturi's on your side, things are golden.

I'll be the first to admit the mistake and apologize if and when it gets turned around, but I don't see a whole lot heading in that direction.

What's up with that?

The Don is a perfect fit with the University of Minnesota athletic department’s plan. Those plans being to run the athletic department into the basement and lock the door.

Lets hope he signs a lifelong contract.

I'd love to be a Gopher coach. Get a sweet extension, then get fired and be paid to not do anything. Maturi is their best friend.

Oof. Reusse posted a letter sent to Joel Maturi by a former Gopher regarding Lucia's extension. Eveidently not happy about it:

TO: Joel Maturi.

"... If you were to poll the former Gopher players from the past along with the season ticket holders and pretty much the rest of the Minnesota hockey community, you would find an 80 percent vote to remove Coach Lucia and his staff.

"Since winning the two national titles [2002-03], the program has struggled _ and especially the last few years. Most of the players on the two national title teams were already there or previously committed.

"We know the hockey program is far below its expectations and standards; the program is dying before our eyes. Empty seats, poor performances, top recruits overlooked and players not properly developed.

"There has been a wall built between the alumni and current regime. We can't wait any longer. It's time for a new coach and staff _ preferably a former Gopher hockey alum. The pool is rich and deep with prospects.

"I have been bombarded with e-mails, calls and requests to do something about this. We still get some top players because of the school's rich hockey history and its facilities but that's rapidly disintegrating.

"The head coach position at the U of M requires one to wear many hats. On top of being a great coach one needs to be a great judge of talent and a great recruiter. He has to have a solid reputation in the community and have great rapport with alumni and fans. I along with most of the alumni feel [Lucia] has failed in all of these areas.

"To give an extension at this time is premature, to put it lightly. I know this letter is blunt but you can call just about anyone in the hockey community and you will find the same feelings.

"We are turning into the laughing stock of the WCHA. These are words from pro scouts every fall in the Minnesota high school elite league. Gopher recruits have been turning pro early because the teams that draft them don't feel they are progressing at the rate needed to make the next step.

"The proof is there. Other schools promise to help players fulfill their dreams, we deter it. I really hope this e-mail will help you step back and take some time to think over your decision.

"You must have read in the Star & Tribune that there is a 78.4 % vote against a contract extension.''

The Goofs are taking the same path with Lucia as the Vikings did with Chilly.

Contract extension basically means he will be fired next year.

80% probably not maybe 50% at the most.

"Since winning the two national titles [2002-03], the program has struggled _ and especially the last few years. Most of the players on the two national title teams were already there or previously committed.
So Don you don't get any credit for the national titles it actually belongs to Woog

"We know the hockey program is far below its expectations and standards; the program is dying before our eyes. Empty seats, poor performances, top recruits overlooked and players not properly developed.
Program is dying? Maybe you should take a look at Michigan tech! Empty seats that's because it smells in Mariucci Arena, clean it for god's sake! Top recruits overlooked? The U gets 4 out the top 5 recruits in the state every year!

"There has been a wall built between the alumni and current regime. We can't wait any longer. It's time for a new coach and staff _ preferably a former Gopher hockey alum. The pool is rich and deep with prospects.
Really? Give ten names that would do better!

"I have been bombarded with e-mails, calls and requests to do something about this. We still get some top players because of the school's rich hockey history and its facilities but that's rapidly disintegrating.
bombarded with e-mails, calls and requests? And writing a letter and giving it to an old fat sportswriter is the best you can do? Get some top players? You get most! Give me some players names that went somewhere else because the U program is so bad.

You can't please everybody! If you don'tr like it cheer for someone else!

"To give an extension at this time is premature, to put it lightly. I know this letter is blunt but you can call just about anyone in the hockey community and you will find the same feelings.
Give me a call! I'm 100% behind Don and so is everyone that matters!

"We are turning into the laughing stock of the WCHA. These are words from pro scouts every fall in the Minnesota high school elite league. Gopher recruits have been turning pro early because the teams that draft them don't feel they are progressing at the rate needed to make the next step.
Laughing stock? Hardly try MTU or MSU. Gopher recruits are going pro early because they would be fools to turn done that money is this economy.

"The proof is there. Other schools promise to help players fulfill their dreams, we deter it. I really hope this e-mail will help you step back and take some time to think over your decision.
Deter the dream? Really? Isn't every college hockey player's dream to win a national title? Now we all know that isn't possible for everyone, right?

"You must have read in the Star & Tribune that there is a 78.4 % vote against a contract extension.''

And how many times did you vote? Everyone knows the only paper that matters is the Pioneer Press!

Oh dear Lord, please find a comforting way to negate Maturi's thinking and his contract. Please help Donny L. understand his time his done here and it is time to move on or retire. Please do this for the Gopher greats of old, the Gopher greats of soon to be and the Gopher greats of years yet to come.

In the name of the Holy Spirit breath a new fiery, divine BLAIS of good favor back into Gopher Hockey Nation. Let your message of hope and fortune BLAIS bright. Let this BLAIS be a beacon to all that SKI-U-MAH is still our rightful battle cry and that our position of hockey is only deserving of national prominence. Let the BLAIS of your blessing remove the tarnish from our armor.

In Jesus' blaising name I pray - AMEN

Yes ER, the Catholics did him in.

I do not like Lucia very much as most of you know.

But all I hear is how the program has gone down and how they havent been winning and blah blah blah.

Wht is Lucia suposed to do about it if the guys he picks do not pan out?

Woog had the same issues. He had a great run and then ran into a streak where his guys did not excell at the College level.

Woog should not have taken Spehaar? (Just one example) Really. He wasnt any good in high school?

Lucia took the right guys, they just didnt develop or went pro.

Id like to know what Lucia is or is not doing that causes the U to lose.

Woog was slightly different in that he only took Minnesota kids, so when he missed, he missed on a much smaller scale.

Don is failing throughout the country.

What's up with that?

He may want to call Red Berenson to see how he manages the same problems without the pitfalls that Lucia has experienced.

Spehaar was the best suckhole, floater in the state. If you wanted a one way player then you knew what you were getting.

Ness -extremely talented hockey player but he was never physical in HS - did you expect him to change his game in college?

It's all alot of blah blah blah to me.

Again, I do not like the guy and haven't since his 'address' to MN Hockey where he bragged about staying away from the other parents. Besides he replaced the greatest Packerboy of all time.

But was he wrong to take Larson, Barriball, White, Fairchild etc etc?

Red Berenson doesn't have the same issues that Lucia does when it comes to taking the MN Mr Hockey type kids. MI doesnt have the same intense interest in HS hockey that we do.

If Woog doesnt take Spehaar and Lucia doesnt take Ness, (just 2 examples) they are in deep trouble with the HS hockey folks and thats not good.

I do not like defending Lucia but I have not heard what he is doing wrong.
