Posted February 1st, 2010 03:18 PM IP Rosen is now reporting that Mauer's agreed to a 10 year deal. What's up with that?

Posted February 17th, 2010 11:17 AM IP I am not one of the members of the "oh, they'll get it done crowd".
It will cost the Twins a lot to keep Mauer. Is it too much? Maybe.
I remember when this was going on with Puckett who was the most popular Twin in history in his time and would still be if not for Mauer.
They kept Pucket and anybody else thay had, they let go.
The team was bad for 6-7 years.
I like the whole Mauer thing but he is only one guy. the payroll is at 90+ million now. It goes to 100 mill if they sign Mauer.
Should they do it?
I don't know.

Posted February 17th, 2010 11:28 AM IP Back in the mid-90's, the Twins didn't do as good of a job in developing minor leaguers as they've done over the last decade. The depth over the last 9 or 10 years has been showcased repeatedly, however. They can dump a slew of cash on Mauer and still be competitive with a $90m payroll in future seasons. It'll mean others will have to go - Morneau, Cuddyer, Kubel maybe - but it doesn't mean they'll immediately revert into the "Butch Huskey Era" Twins again.
Could they contend for a World Series with that much dedicated to Mauer, or would we be dealing with the "Torii Hunter Era" Twins who are content with division titles? Well, that's the question...
Either way, I think the days of consistently losing for years on end are over (as long as Selig doesn't do something stupid like realign divisions). What's up with that?

But Govs, I think the cupboard is bare.
I dont think thay have guys now who can help them if 4-5 years down the road if Mauer is all they have left of the current players.
What about Slowey, Blackburn, Span etc. Will there be enough money to sign those guys if Mauer gets 23 mill/ year?
Mauer is one guy. Sure he is insanely popular as most CDH guys are but go back and look at the attendence in Pucketts last 3 years. Abysmal. But they had to sign Puckett.
The team and baseball is bigger than one guy.
I want Target Field to have a competitive team.
I've spent too many nights in the stands during the Bombo Rivera era.

Trade Mauer now for a ****load of prospects and a couple cheap major league guys. Sign him back after next year, that way we are still good and still have Mauer. How is that plan not perfect? Elk River AA State Champions- 2001 Boys & 2004 Girls

I think we see them responding to the new revenue already.
But Neut, the Dodgers payroll was 100 mill last year and the Twins wil be over that if they sign Mauer.
I doubt the Twins can match LAD's revenue.
But anyways, millions of fans are not going to pay to watch Joe Mauer on a 72-90 team. They didnt when Puckett was in CF.

Posted February 23rd, 2010 11:34 AM IP OK so here is another issue and I know this is heresy to alot of folks but: Is Mauer worth 20 + million a year?
Here are his 162 game averages for his career:
.327 17 HR 92 RBI 196 hits.
20 plus million/yr?
The Twins have a lot to think about.

what about his handling of pitchers?
how about his throwing arm
how about his popularity with the fans
I think the intangibles help him with this argument
the only drawback is his HS educational and athletic choices Clueless in Carver County

I doubt the Twins want to do 10 yrs.
