Posted June 17th, 2011 12:00 AM IPAnd another thing!!!! I feel the need to vent.
Those two new mixes have me scared now. I'm really not asking for much with this new boxed set.
I want them to use Frank Holmes' album cover and artwork.
I want them to use the widest variety of material SPREAD OUT over the discs, meaning I don't want a dozen different versions of "Good Vibrations" dominating an entire disc.
For the single (or double) compilation disc of "best versions", I don't want BWPS copied - I don't want new material recorded, I don't want connected songs, and I don't want suites.
Other than that, I don't care what they do. But.....I hope Alan Boyd is looking over Mark Linnett's shoulder. Do you know how many different sounding versions of Pet Sounds are out there? There are alternate takes, some with shortened fades, some with extended fades, different bridges, some are "hissy", some are flat, BUT THEY ARE ALL LOUD! TOO LOUD! Can't he/they get it right? I have a hard time enjoying the Pet Sounds CD's. I can't remember what the original Pet Sounds' songs are supposed to sound like anymore. I'm about ready to go back to my vinyl Carl & The Passions/Pet Sounds album.
Same thing with that Brian Wilson 1988 CD reissue. What a debacle that was. Same thing. Wrong mixes, and it was too loud. I believe you could've returned it for a corrected version, though I didn't.
I hope this SMiLE boxed set isn't so loud that it blows away (volume-wise) the rest of The Beach Boys' catalogue. I have no problems with the sound quality of many of the bootlegs; yes, some need to be cleaned up. Actually, I have no problems with the sound quality of the Capitol released SMILE stuff on Smiley Smile and 20/20 and the boxed set (although didn't Linnett screw up Do You Like Worms?)
OK, that's all - for now...

Posted June 17th, 2011 02:12 AM IPAccording to the MOJO piece Linnett says that they have condensed things down so where you have a 40 minute session going through various takes they have edited that down to 10-15 minutes of the best stuff "and it slowly coalesces to the best and most listenable stuff'". He says 4 CDs was barely enough to do justice to what they had.
I don't doubt it will end up being too loud though. Its the current vogue.
Posted June 17th, 2011 03:21 AM IPalan, anything else of interest worth mentioning from the MOJO article?

Posted June 17th, 2011 04:08 PM IPSurprisingly little considering they interview Brian, Al and Mike. Nothing we don't already know. Linnett only has a small column.
About the only thing Brian mentions is that Van Dyke helped with the music, at one stage advising him to change the key which Brian claims made all the difference to how the song sounded. He didn't write any, just advised on it. I'll have a dig through them again and see if there is anything worth mentioning. Lovely 45 though, even if I have owned Cabinessence for the last 40 years.
Posted June 25th, 2011 12:05 AM IPLife of Brian: Beach Boys leader Wilson to get biopic treatment
Producer behind Terrence Malick's The Tree of Life secures rights to story of Wilson's work and struggles with mental illness
The life of former Beach Boys leader Brian Wilson is set to be made into a film. The rights to Wilson's story, and that of his wife Melinda, have been secured by the River Road Entertainment founder Bill Pohlad, who produced Terrence Malick's Palme D'Or winner, The Tree of Life. The screenplay will be written by Oren Moverman, director of The Messenger, who also wrote I'm Not There, Todd Haynes's Bob Dylan biopic.
Screendaily.com reported that the film is to "focus on Wilson's work, his fight with mental illness and his loving relationship with Melinda".
The news comes as Wilson's past work with the Beach Boys is once again in the spotlight. Earlier this year it was announced that the Beach Boys would finally be releasing Smile, the abandoned 1967 album that was seen as the catalyst for Wilson's increasing problems with mental illness. As his condition worsened he became a semi-detached member of the band, rarely playing live with them and no longer supervising their studio work as closely as he had in their mid-60s heyday.
From 1975 until 1991, with intermittent breaks, Wilson was closely associated with the controversial psychologist Eugene Landy, who served first as his therapist, then his manager. Wilson married Melinda, his second wife, in 1995. Over the last decade his career has revived, as Wilson has taken to performing full recreations of the Beach Boys album Pet Sounds and his own version of Smile, which he also rerecorded to critical acclaim.
The Beach Boys' story was previously told in the 2000 TV movie The Beach Boys: An American Family, and Wilson's life has been the subject of documentaries, notably 1995's Brian Wilson: I Just Wasn't Made For These Times.

Posted June 26th, 2011 03:02 AM IPHideous news! It won't be easy viewing!
There was an interview with Brian in The Guardian today which is probably on their website. The usual thing, where the interviewer is faced with a Brian that will only make minimal answers, even though he seems to have been quite happy.
No news other than there is still a 'tentative' BB reunion mentioned. He does talk to Mike quite often on the phone but avoids any longer contact, and professes that he hasn't had any contact with Bruce in so long that he's no longer know what he looked like. Not a bad piece as Brian interviews go though.
Posted July 27th, 2011 01:12 PM IPLong time no see, and long story, I am now steeped in French music form the 1920's and 1930's, which I dont think would be of interest (let me know if it is) but anyway I came across this which I did not know, you may know this already but just in case...

Posted July 27th, 2011 02:00 PM IPThere you are! I was getting worried! Hope all is well.
If i had heard that before i've forgotten it. Great energy. It does make you realise how much extra goes into the Beach Boys versions though, and Cottonfields was a big hit in the UK just when i was really starting to listen to music, (as opposed to it going on all around me).
Posted July 27th, 2011 04:55 PM IPHi Daniele. I was starting to wonder what had become of you too!
I knew that Cottonfields wasa Leadbelly song but I'm not sure whether I'd ever heard his version. Though I might have done.Have YOU been Con-Demed yet?
Posted July 27th, 2011 06:09 PM IPYeah :-) I think it a good question to ask oneself, the original and the cover are just so far apart, and yet it somehow makes sense! Aint it marvelous!

Posted August 27th, 2011 01:57 PM IPWell ,here it is at last. November 1st in the US which i suspect may be 31 October in the UK, but there is nothing on Amazon UK about it yet. Amazon were originally offering it for $110 but they have upped that to $146. God knows what that will be over here (£100?) but we'll see.
Posted August 27th, 2011 03:07 PM IPThis looks spectacular! Obviously what's inside the packaging is what's important, but, I still am glad they used Frank Holmes' work. It adds to the "originality" (is that a word?) of the project. I'm comforted - finally - to know that this set will be the REAL representation of the SMiLE songs, as opposed to that other 2004 release...

Very glad to see that they have included Cool, Cool Water. Hopefully a sign of how far up the set goes. I should imagine that they will be putting some Can't Wait Too Long on here too.

I'm surprised they went into Smiley Smile territory, or more specifically in "Cool Cool Water"'s case, into the Wild Honey sessions. That really could('ve) opened a can of worms.
I'm wondering if the "whispering winds" segment is included in "Wind Chimes", and, I'm assuming the "water chant" is part of "I Love To Say Dada".
Posted August 27th, 2011 08:01 PM IPI'm hoping they're going to include some tracks from Smiley Smile as well. Seems an odd thing to me to ignore the album that quite literally resulted from the sessions, contained music from all but two of its main tracks and the same title + a word in front.
Even if some are of the belief that the two should be separated by a phantom album that never was, it's still very interesting and important to show the journey this music went on, and Smiley Smile and Wild Honey are a part of that, for sure. As are 20/20, Sunflower and Surf's Up.
Posted August 27th, 2011 08:19 PM IPAgain, I'm very surprised that they went past that "scrapped"/cut off date which was, what, the May 1967 "Dada" session? After that it was Smiley Smile sessions. With the boxed set called "The Smile Sessions", that would've been the easiest road to take, not to go into Smiley Smile territory. Or beyond that.
I thought that the accompanying book could or would do an adequate job of explaining the evolution of some of the Smile songs, "Cool Cool Water" being the best example. Was it necessary to include future sessions to illustrate the point? Where do you stop? A matter opinion, I guess. Not that there's anything wrong with that.
Posted August 27th, 2011 08:44 PM IPI guess the problem I have with this is the assumption on which most discussion on Smile is based, and that is that Smiley Smile was a bad artistic choice - or simply a product of a deranged mind, depending on how much you dig the mythology. For many it seems Smile needs Smiley Smile to enhance its status as a lost masterpiece, or indeed a lost masterpiece at all, and not simply a set of out-takes and alternates.
I *do* think that there is a conceptual distinction, and evidently a change in production style, but it seems to me to be far more subtle than most give it credit for. The liner notes in the two-fer are some of the most miserable I have ever had the displeasure to read. The idea that p'raps some might think that the tracks took on a better form through the shift is apparently alien to much of the Beach Boys elite. That there are some, for instance, who prefer the abortion of the Rock With Me Henry version of Wonderful over the one on Smiley, shows that yeah, people were probably not up to appreciating what Brian was doing.
It occurs that had Smiley been embraced for its excellence, this would be a moot point, and that the distinctions which Brian made between the projects would be seen as mostly irrelevant. An album was being worked on from 66 - 67, with these songs, and he delivered an album in 67 with these songs.
It also discounts the idea that Smile could have ever happened any time past 1967, and more importantly that Smile could have ever been released in 66/67 as an album which wasn't up to itself. Artistic choices that appear to hamper the listeners absolute enjoyment are discounted from the start, just as Smiley Smile is.
If The Beach Boys had finished and released that music after 67, would that have been allowed to be Smile? Or would it have been a poser Smile? Is there a time limit on when an artist is allowed to complete something? Can a work not evolve and change? Why does it even matter that Cabin Essence say, was finished a couple of years after it was first recorded?
There is a gap in discussion, I feel, between what could have happened and what did happen. The Smile Sessions happened, then Brian felt he couldn't finish it or chose not to or whatever mixture of those two. People talking about wanting this set to be less about mythology than the facts, should be more concerned about the music that developed from those sessions, than if Carl's evil 68 vocal be included.

A couple of thoughts on first glance:
- "Gee" gets its own separate title
- "I'm In Great Shape" was moved from the BWPS placement - good move!
- " I Wanna Be Around / Workshop" follows "Surf's Up" - hmmm
- both "Heroes And Villains" and "Good Vibrations" get their own disc
- I guess it's not terribly important, but they still have "Good Vibrations" sequenced at the end. In ANY sequence/set list, I just don't hear it there. But, there's plenty of time to debate that in the future. For now everything is positive, great, and full speed ahead!

26. Surf's Up 1967 (Solo version) (Bonus Track)
going on. Could be extremely great if true! Either way seems to be a big ol' lovely surprise. My memory is hazy, but what is the third version of Wonderful?

I can hear another (third version) "Wonderful" in my head but I can't describe it!
For that 1967 "Surf's Up", could it be that they are, like "Cool Cool Water", tapping into the Smiley Smile OR Wild Honey sessions?

Sure, we have the track list, but I'm sure there's going to be some great surprises in how they've arranged things, similar to the mix of Wonderful with the extra backing vocals.

So I'm not crazy, and that this could be a third version of Wonderful?
Oh, yeah. Actually, I'm listening to it right now. I have it titled "Wonderful (weird version) in my personal collection. If I'm not mistaken, and I have the right version, it sounds like Carl on lead vocal. It's like a combination Smile/Smiley Smile version, with "Rock With Me Henry" coming in and out throughout the song, with some instrumental sections.

Being a fan mix freak, I am looking very much forward to this. I am cautiously optimistic that Brian's great fades will be used. But, yeah, the arrangements and segues should be fascinating. The one that I am looking forward to is "Wonderful" going into "Look".

Re: weird Wonderful : What boot is that on? Could I perhaps have an old pm?
Oh wait, is this just the Rock With Me Henry version, or is it one from after that?
I'm not sure what boot I got it from, it was along time ago. It MIGHT be the "Rock With Me Henry" version; from my description does it sound like the standard "Rock With Me Henry" version? I thought it was different.
I tried to PM you but I didn't know how! I never sent a song via PM. If I had your direct Email address, I know how to send mp3's that way.
EDIT: In all the recent excitement, I think I confused myself! I think I am referring to the actual "Rock With Me Henry" version, and maybe, maybe, the third version is the one with the "Mama Mama Mama" tag?
Posted August 28th, 2011 07:09 PM IPAh I think that's it. Don't think I've heard the Mama Mama version. If you have the time to upload it, you can use sendspace:
