Pretty much sums up how I'm feeling...bleak'n'blury and somewhere else. I've updated matlockfm a bit, but have to decide whether to close it down next month before i have to start paying real money to the hosting company. Have fun, and if I'm not around much have a good Christmas too

A strange thing happend last night as we came out of the restaurant with my sister.
The colony of swans was out of the canal, and I could not resist...

Not arty, but as a double world champion taking his final ever bow I find this pic quite poignant...

ANd Yay to you for cycling. I wish they would bring this system which is now in place in Paris and Barcelona and also some other cities I am sure, whre you dont even have to own a bike. You just pick up a bike at one point in the city and leave it at your point of destination.

Posted December 5th, 2007 04:59 PM IP We actually have huge problems with cyclits here in my city - using pavements, having pavement sharing (so pedestrians don't feel safe), riding with no lights and having no regard for the law. Not saying everyone is like that, mind you. And I cannot cycle for medical reasons so it not for everyone. Getting the US to sign up to internatinal emmissions laws and not expanding any more airports would probably improve the global situation 50% at a stroke.
But, not here to rant - much hehe - but to say WHAAAAYYYYYYHAYY - Way to go PJ - that's bloody fantastic
Hope we get to see lots of press cuttings at some point. You must be soo proud D!

D, that system has been in place here for years! that's why cyclists buy locks and chains!

Don't think it, know it!
The Climate goes through cycles, there is no proof that man has as much effect on the climate change as is put forward.
The culprit for the changing climate is mostly the sun.
In earths history there have been worse periods of change, and none due to man, in fact, many scientists have spoken out about this, but of course you won't hear there side too much as there's no money in it
I mean come on Al Gore winning the Nobel Prize, if little Damien can do that for making a presentation on a video then who do you think is funding this nonsense? LOL!
It's just another measure of control ...j (",)

Posted December 6th, 2007 01:15 PM IP Well i agree to an extent about the sun activity, which through history has fluctuated and caused weather shifts here, but I don't think we can afford to take the risk. Besides, anything that forces America rethink their disgracefully arrogant 'we're above world opinion' attitude to absolutely everything has got to be a good thing for the rest of the planet.

i'm no expert, but it does need more debate, thre's 2 sides to this but we only ever hear the 1 side, it's then you start to worry, i hate dictatorship, and yes, until more is known, we should be careful, but shouldn't we always?
We've only got one planet, yet we treat it like shit.
We do effect our envirnoment, but i'm more worried about the amount of toxic sludged pumped into our water, hell even the amount of chlorine in the water is unsafe for consumption!
it's a fu@k up world, and there's some reeeal crazy people at the helm, IGNORANCE IS BLISS

The hell?--that's terrible Alan! I've started biking to work just this past year and I've got a question--what do you do when the roads are iced? I think I'll have to stop until the stuff's melted away.

Nothing stops me! Honestly, i'll cycle through snow. You have to be careful though!
And of course a London winter is not exactly the most severe, and we have gritters out on the main roads at the slightest sign of snow, so even if my own road is icy I can get to a main one pretty quickly.

Posted December 7th, 2007 09:27 AM IP I hear you John, but being French I do think that we can have an impact on pur lives, and I would say cycling is not just an issue pf "public health" but of personal health, since most people are always in a rush for their jobs and as a result have to use their cars or public transport, whereas if the demands imposed upon us were more generous, we would perhaps consider what is now considered as an alternative mode of transportation, ie walking or cycling, the best types of exercize there is.

Posted December 7th, 2007 05:09 PM IP I'm all for walking - in fact if my Doctor didn't practice two miles away up an enormous hill I'd not use my car 90% of the year - just day trips and holidays. I'd love to cycle once again on private land, but alas my balance organ is faulty and I dread the consequences lol. Suppose if i could swim properly that i could swim every day seeing that I'm five minutes from the local harbourside lol
Its the school run that really, really bugs me -as if everyone stopped this practice they'd be surprised at just how safe it would actually be -its a self perpetuating problem in my view.

Posted December 7th, 2007 07:09 PM IP Yeah, swimming is the best exercise--the most cardio with the least amount of impact on the bones. My ears suffer though, and access to a pool is a hassle and $$. Running is the second best, and even more cardio I think, but it is harder on the body. So mostly I do runnning but I picked up biking first as a recreational family treat and now as a commuting vehicle--less sweaty and faster than running.
Alan, that's pretty awesome that you 'icebike' (google that!). My problem is that since Baltimore doesn't have any bike lanes I use side streets and back roads which aren't plowed so they ice up pretty hard. Also they use salt on the roads and I'm worried about ruining the chain and stuff on the bike. It's a shame because I like biking (and running) in the cold much more than the heat. And it's good for the environment and my wallet. Daniele, that free bike thing is awesome, I wish our area was more 'biker' friendly. It certainly isn't bus friendly:
http://wjz.com/local/hate.crime.bus.2.605981.html
Oh, and I always thought it was the rate at which the temperature was climbing, not that it was climbing. That's the unnatural, man-made problem.
And Cheese--did you make that balsa model?? Have you seen any Thomas Demand photos?

Yes Nick, I made it, and no, not seen any Thomas Demand stuff.
Dad spray painted the struts and 'carved' the pillars, and I also added model railway railings, and made all the awnings and signs, parasols etc on a graphic art program and printed them out. The rest is a combination of balsa wood and cardboard. The film that it was made for is on my website - I needed to show the pier as fire damaged - and dispite plenty of offers to torch the real one at Weston Super Mare this was the best way. It also allowed the camera to move around in a way it couldn't with the real thing (which appears in the film also). This is what the real thing looked like (and still does lol);

Yes, I had a job as a postman for awhile, and it was great to be out on the bike, and i learned a couple of tips from one of the other riders, although due to my swiss cheesed memory i can seem to only remember one. Really good for you, and something lovely to hop on a bike and off to work in the wee hours to sort the post before delivery.
I really should get my bike up and running and just get out there, God knows i could do with the exercise,
since my lack of exercise over the past 8 years or so i've put on 5 stone and boy do i feel it
My beef is with how the whole envirnoment campaign thing is like a new religion, that can't be questioned, or reasoned, all the funding that goes into it now is unbelieveable, but it's not to find out more, it's to support the cause, there's a blinkered view, there are agendas pushing it, but then the big bucks always have an agenda, this is just the new spin
forgive me ranting : )
now sorry for hi-jacking the thread -
