Posted September 6th, 2007 02:10 PM IP I'm busily mixing away the new CD, so here are some tracks in progress -as they are 24bit and having not been monitored on normal headphones yet they aren't the finished article lol. These are from the album 'Butterflies and Tears' -a concept CD featuring a lot of friends, and songs about places and people (a musical free-for-all really). Please don't keep these in iTunes after listening - the final ones will be available soon (October 1st). On Lonely Town, the wah-wah instrumental is a stylophone hehe.
PS Susan, does the offer still hold re the fiddle?

Posted September 6th, 2007 10:42 PM IP Here is a maybe incomplete and definitely unmixed newish (week old, I think) recording of a song I wrote last year. My friends seem to like it. (I'm terrible at predicting which of my songs they'll like.)

Hope you enjoy, and if you don't, I'd be very glad for any thoughtful criticism.

Posted September 8th, 2007 01:29 AM IP This unmixed song is a reworked version of an old song. It's unlike most of my recordings--simpler, harder-rocking. I've recorded it countless times, with the origins of this one in my old band's Ellen Kay synth-driven (2004) version. These are the same (differently mixed) drums, but everything else was redone by me.
By the way, I've noticed that it sounds like I'm saying:
"I can be frustrating / I'm selfish and I've never thrown up."
The word is grown. Just thought I'd clarify that part. I mean, as much of an accomplishment as a vomit-free life might be ...

Posted September 8th, 2007 09:20 AM IP l meant to say that I with all the new things happening in the last few days, I have had very little time to read lengthy contributions or listen to the music posted here, and the art in the other section.
And in a way this is the reason why we put up a sepaate gallery forum, so that, unlike a thread which is thrown back to the bottom of a page regularly, these 2 threads would stay put in the same place for easy reference, or even just to browse, as one would do at a leasurly pace in a gallery, when we dont feel much like posting, but rather like "sponging".
So, feed back will come.
And Alan, I think you should repost the songs you posted on one of the other boards.

Posted September 8th, 2007 09:32 AM IP here's a track I've recently cobbled together, I could do with help with the title actually, it's kind of a noir-ish 50s/60s John Barry rip-off! It's not finished but any good titles would be appreciated!

Same problem here! Things are back to normal now so I can spend some time listening to them!
No-one really wants my track back up here do they? It wasn't the biggest hit last time....

Posted September 8th, 2007 02:41 PM IP Well this is the problem when you post tracks, there is I assume always a feeling that whatever feedback you get can be more "polite" rather than heartfelt.
Well if you give me the title of it again I can at least find it in my iTunes library. I have your song, but did not catalogue it under Alan. I am old and dont remember the name of your band, so impossible to find it in the general mayhem that is my iTunes library.

I think it is mis-tagged as 05 Eldridge The Mighty, by and 'Clifton Brothers, instead of Eldridge BY The Mighty Clifton Brothers!

What are people's preferences here? I, for one, really do like to hear people's opinions. Politeness is great, but not if it is dishonest. If you want to tell me you think my vocals are too loud, the song's too short and the lyrics on that verse aren't good because [x], I'm up for it. don't try so hard.

I think I have offended a few people in the past by trying to give that sort of honest opinion - its difficult to guage sometimes - although i suppose it helps if the poster lets us know if there is anything specific like that. Having been in bands and had mass fights over mixing I think i have quite good ears for that sort of thing - just don't ask me if there is too much reverb or adi (if that means anything - it just sprung into my head!) as i'm crap on the techy side!

Posted September 8th, 2007 06:04 PM IP I am in favour of constructive criticism in general, but Luther I have not listened to anything yet on this thread as of yet, becuz you know why. I would never be in a position to comment on the technical side, so I am afraid my comments do tend to limit themselves to Yeah I like it! But I am aware that this is not good quality feedback, so be warned. This said I clearly recall watching a video of your band a coupla years back, and you rocked!

Rip away, after all with friends that just say "oh, more f*cking Mat Cheesy shite" to everything I compose then I'm immune really. Besides, apart from re-recording the vocals (in the process of now) it's not like I'm gonna turn round and exclaim "my life's work...ruined" cos I know whther I like it - just that sometimes a comment here and there will lead to a better solution to a problem - not that much can be altered at the 11th hour bar the mixing. But at least it saves the cost of distributing, printing and waste of pixels promoting it if it is more unredeemable cheesy matlock shite of course. Uneccasery politeness is horrible, and it always shows through..

I'm just listening to this now. And that lead vocal is tremendous. Really impessive. I also like the instrumental break, but for my taste, a solid minute would be chopped, with the song ending around the time that break begins. (I'm a 2:30 - 3:30, tops, minute song guy.) don't try so hard.

Thanks Luther, Anna is much in demand in europe as a session singer - this was her second take, sight reading, and she'd only heard what is in fact a very difficult song to get the cues right ten minues previously. I know what you mean about chopping everything down, but I enjoy dwelling on stuff if I like the sound, and I have no use for a 21minute long album! I'm hoping that we can rerecord the vocals next weekend.

Posted September 10th, 2007 01:50 AM IP Sorry I haven't been able to listen to everyone's songs. I've been so crazy busy lately, I haven't had time to follow all the threads either. Plus I have some personal stuff I'm dealing with so I haven't been very active (posting) anywhere I'm afraid.
I hope to be able to come back and have a listen at a later date.

Posted September 11th, 2007 05:21 PM IP Well I started this morning, and all the songs (except Lauries, because I have them already :-)) are now on my puter.
Started with misterfusty nameless track, an instrumental, which I actually mistook for a Miles Davies tune on the first few bars. I guess, it also reminds me of St Germain. It does have that French 1960's music for film feel to it. It really is cool in a Jack Kerouac sort of a way.
Love it.

Posted September 16th, 2007 08:15 PM IP "Same Coffeepot"
http://www.sendspace.com/file/rnqfy0
I wrote this about a year ago. I recorded this version this morning, with the exception of the piano and bass (which were done a few months ago). This isn't necessarily done and definitely isn't mixed, but there's nothing I like more on a Sunday morning than recording. So I recorded.
PS -- I employed the "Carl Wilson - Livin' With a Heartache" technique of vocals (i.e. drinking) on this song, so by the last ones (the refrain, left side, "answer" vox) I was getting...relaxed. So forgive errors.
don't try so hard.

Really nice - interesting song!
I like the vocal sections with the harmonies more than the parts solo - I know it gives it variation but I would go for them throughout - and they should be louder as well in the mix. I like the harmonies a lot - its something that always impresses me when people can do that as I love harmonies but don't have an ear for them (and I can't sing anyway.... ).

Posted September 17th, 2007 03:53 AM IP Thanks for the comments, Alan. I have to say, I am known for mixing vocals WAY too loud, so I am trying now to keep them lower. If someone says bring them up, I consider that a victory. I think I might try it harmony all the way through, too, just to see what happens. don't try so hard.

I go to the Smiley board too!
And I just thought it sounded better with harmonies (honest!) and that they needed to come up in the mix!
It is hard to balance them out though.

Posted September 18th, 2007 08:40 PM IP lol. I know you go there. I was thinking that vocal was not very good, though. And so I assumed that played into your comment.
What I'm currently thinking about trying (possibly this afternoon) is a two-part harmony throughout, both voices doubled. And then in the refrain, I'd leave the third and fourth parts that are panned left now. The original version of this song did have a vocal harmony on the second part of each couplet anyway, so in a way that's just going back to the original. don't try so hard.

Posted September 19th, 2007 09:17 AM IP Here's one for you guys... This is me on vocals and acoustic guitar, captured in a single pass. The only overdubs are the shaker, the lead guitar solo and a very simplistic backing vocal. It's just a demo for possible future use, so make of it what you will.
The vibe is something along the lines of "She's Leaving Home" (lyrically) and Buffalo Springfield Again (musical) with a shot of 70's Canyon Rock for good measure.

Love this tune, particularly the kind of psychedelic lick towards the end, which reminds me ot Tales from the Topographic Ocean and would love to hear more :-)
