Homeless Stay In Tents In Man's Back Yard

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- A Bloomington man is running afoul of his neighbors by letting several homeless people spend the night in tents he's set up in his back yard.

Hal Taylor, a 91-year-old retired priest with a Ph.D. in psychology, erected the tents behind his Bloomington home about a week ago and said he's just looking to provide shelter for the homeless, 6News' Tanya Spencer reported.

"They slept in my house the first night. Then the second night we got a bunch of tents and put them up in the backyard," he said. "We have more tents available and we'll put them up as we need them."

Taylor said the six to nine men are shuttled to his house at 9 p.m. every night and are picked up at 8 a.m. During that time, he said they're told not to talk above a whisper.

"The dogs in this neighborhood make more noise than these people," he said.

But neighbors say that that the middle of a subdivision isn't the right place for a homeless tent camp, and are worried about property values and safety.

"We want to know if there are offenders. We want to know if we're at risk," said Melody Dennis. "I don't want my kids in the front yard. I don't want my kids in the backyard. I mean, it's changing the whole dynamic of this neighborhood. I don't like it."

Others, like neighbor Lois Rossridge, said they don't mind the makeshift camp, and have even offered to help.

"We have five grown kids and it's hard for them to live," Rossridge said.

Mayor Mark Kruzan said he didn't think a back yard should be used as a homeless shelter, but doesn't know whether Taylor is within his rights for using his property.

Taylor, who said he learned first-hand about the plight of the homeless while growing up next to a rescue mission, said the current setup isn't ideal, but that the city needs to do something.

"No, I don't want them living in my backyard. Why would I want this? But this needs to be done," he said.

The issue is expected to be raised at the next Bloomington City Council meeting on May 5.

Too bad we (me too, I would have serious reservations to letting folks stay in my yard....) all can't open ourselves up to help others as this man has done.

I agree, density. I'm just having a real problem trusting people that I don't know. Heck, I sometimes have trouble trusting people that I do! It seems that some have taken to showing their true colors lately and they aren't very pretty colors either!

The battle has never changed from the beginning. It is "the seed of the serpent against the seed of the woman.” The battle is over truth, but not political truth, it is over eternal truth. Unfortunately, most people are unaware of this even though their Bible tells them that they “wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of the world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.” Eph. 6:12
