Check out the 2011 Checkpoint Enduro Championship. It is the District 37 Enduro series (Which Ryan is both the Overall Champion AND Heavy Weight Champion) headed up by the Western Enduro Promoters Group. Only 1 event conflict with USDR and that is the GP weekend. We're also offering an AWESOME Family Enduro Series for all the kids, moms, dads and even the Pros the Saturday Prior to each event! Check out www.ridechec.com (I am the Graphic Designer, Web Designer AND Vice Chair of the series!)

Round 1 - 1/16/11 - Johnson Valley
Round 2 - 3/20/11 - Red Mountain
Round 3 - 5/16/11 - Gorman
Round 4 - 9/18/11 - Anza
Round 5 - 10/16/11 - Red Mountain
Round 6 - 11/20/11 - Johnson Valley

Heres some history on the new series.

Early this year, Freshman Enduro Steward Joe Bianchi and District 37 President Jerry Grabow started brainstorming a way to grow the District 37 Enduro Series back to its former greatness. At one point the Enduro series was where true champions were made and now is all but looked over among the other D37 desert events.

They found that there were several KEY areas in which the District 37 Enduro series was falling short:

Lack of Publicity - No one really knows that we have an enduro series. Its 5 rounds smashed in between 40 desert races with an asterix reading "also pays desert points"

Lack of General Knowledge - peope just dont know what an enduro is or how they would do it. No one has taken the time to show them or they have not taken the time to learn.

Loss of Family Atmosphere - while few of the enduros still hold family rides on saturday there are some clubs that just dont have the man power. The courses are often to difficult to bring family members on and it becomes a Sunday only event.

To Help address these problems and add more to the series Bianchi and Grabow recruited 4 Aces Enduro racer Kelly Christensen to head up a committee of Enduro clubs to band together, pull the series out from the shadows of the Desert Races and create a family environment while still maintaining the elite competition that District 37 Enduro is known for. The Enduro Clubs - 4 Aces MC, Prospectors MC, Training Wheels MC, United MC, Ventura County MC - have formed the Western Enduro Promoters group (WEPG) and bring you the 2011 Checkpoint Enduro Championship.

INTROCUDING THE 2011 CHECKPOINT ENDURO CHAMPIONSHIP - CHEC

The main goals of the CHEC:

-Promote the series with a stand alone website www.ridechec.com where riders can get updates, results, point standings, event information, contact their steward, helpfull hints and get redirected to the Enduro Message Board.

-Expand ridership by offereing more rider friendly, yet still challenging, courses with the 3 loop format. 1st loop fun, 2nd loop challenging, 3rd loop difficult.

-Host the new Family Enduro Series which will take place the saturday prior to every enduro and will provide a fun safe way to train, leard and teach Enduro. People will have the opportunity to ride with Pro's and the more experienced riders and learn first hand how an enduro is ridden.

-Additionally, expand ridership by promoting the series and highlighting it among the D37 desert races as the "Thinking Man's Race" where you get all the same terrain and MORE that you would get in a desert race without the bomb run and "hold it to the yolk" riding style needed for normal desert races.

-Recruit new and old riders into Enduro Clubs and District 37 Clubs alike to help keep Desert events alive. With more Club participation organize more Enduro events to fill out a complete 8 Schedule comprised of only Enduro Events.

-As a long term goal the WEPG will expand the Enduro series beyond District 37 and work towards creating a National Western or Regional AMA series.

Chair - Kelly Christensen
Vice Chair - Erek Kudla
Steward - Joe Bianchi
Sectretary - Steve Dombovary
Treasurer - Richie Wohlers
Family Enduro - Rob Wranosky

Is there a different sign up for CHEC or just the usual AMA and Enduro card? Thanks!

Nope. Just like the regular Enduro series with better promotion, organization and communication between the clubs. AMA and Enduro card (unless you're from outta state) and you're golden!

Erek, I did one enduro last year and got a flat at CP1. Rode the next 20 miles on a flat until I couldn't take it anymore and brought it in. Your dad and I messed around with the tire but I was running the tubless system and it was giving us grief. Should have just taken your pop up on his offer to use his rear wheel. (Hows your shoulder?)

I did like the format and want to do another race. I was a little bit intimidated by the three guys that left on my minute because they all had fancy computers/mini laptops. Made it nice for me though I just tagged along behind them and even with a flat was doing well.

Question/concern is can I race an enduro with just a roll chart and a stopwatch and still be competetive? Or what about just riding the race without any charts/computers? I just want to go out have fun with the minumum gear and not feel lost.

Thats why I do USDR/D-37 desert. Get on, wait for the start, go like hell untill they kick you off the course, easy.

Thanks, Ken

- Yeah... my dad would give you his right arm if you needed it! My shoulder is better then it was befor I broke it!! when I do pull ups my OTHER shoulder hurts (probably from compentating the last few months)

- You can ride an enduro with just the Roll chart, Odo and watch. You need to know where you're at, where you should be and what time it is. Its a little more work to do it that way because the computer basically does it all for you automatically. Telling you "Hey you're late!" or "woh man you're early!"

If you want to go without any stuff you have to hook up with someone that keeps good time then you just ride and dont pass them. Paul Krause always likes riding with Newbies because they dont try and race him, plus he almost always finishes in the top 5 so he's a good bet!

if you need some pointers feel free to come by our camp or better yet do the family enduro on saturday!

I know what you mean about Desert racing being much easier... but I describe it to people like this - Enduro's are like playing a drinking game and Desert racing is like pounding a fifth of Jack. They're both very different but have the same outcome...

Saturday Family Enduro was a BLAST this weekend!!! we had 80 entrants, tons of kids and families. I rode with 1st time Enduro racer Sam Bangert and he finished 6th overall 3 lapper and 3rd in class. I took 2nd Overall 4 lapper behind Nick Blais.

Sunday was a little tougher. Did really well all day till the 1st canyon on the 3rd loop. It wouldn't have been so bad if I hadn't already done 80 miles that day, and 50 miles that day before! Ryan got lost for almost 3 miles and couldn't make it up. We're still waiting for the results but it sounds like Brad Pace may have gotten the overall win!

Full artilce, results and everything will be posted on www.ridechec.com over the next few days!
