Hey guys, just recently got a new addition to the garage, an 01 YZ 426f. Here is my problem. Put the bike in gear, ease the clutch out for a nice smooth take off but the clutch is really "jerky" almost as if someone is holding my rear wheel then just suddenly releases it when the clutch is fully engaged. Its a street legal supermoto, so its kind of embarassing when Im at the light, if Im not carefull it looks like Im just learning to ride a bike. LOL. I recently got the bike, dont know a lot of history on it. I just changed the oil with Lucas 10w40 semi synthetic but no difference. Looking online I found that the 2000 model was known for this but not so much the 2001 model. Anyway, Im not a master mechaninc, but Im sure there are plenty of you guys out there that have a lot more wrench time under your belts than I do. Any help would be great....oh yeah, I do plan on getting a new clutch, but just wanted to see if I need to look into purchasing some other aftermarket parts while Im in there. Thanks!

sounds like warped plates to me or the basket is grooved causing the discs to get hung up, but I would start with plates.

My son's YZ was that way. It did get better with a new clutch kit. Plates, disks and springs. Also changed out the cable. The Basket was pretty grooved. I but is I had changed that it would have fixed the problem. As far as after market I would stick OEM on the cluch stuff they seem to hold up way better. Then again if you got the cash go with a recluse clutch and then it will be like having a semi automactic bike and will never have a need to use your clutch lever again.

Thanks for the good tips guys! I think I may have figured it out. DUMMY DUMMMY DUMMY! Check After riding it home from work today, it clicked! I should have cought it sooner, but just goes to show, dont eliminate the easy things first! Anyway, The lever was comming almost all the way out before the clutch was fully engaged, I mean almost all the way out! I adjusted the clutch cable down by the arm, started the bike put it in gear and it smoothly rolled forward as I slowly released the clutch which it did not do before. I will know for sure tomarow when I take it to work again. So in all reality the clutch was never really engaging making it so "jumpy" and "rough", knowing that Im sure Im definately due for a new clutch kit as it has been smoked! Let you guys know tomorw!

Hey KX450Pilot, I would just like to add information to the clutch on your 426. I race USDR with my 01 426, #26s novice class. I wish I had seen your guestion earler then just now cuz what you discribed sounded to me like an adjustment problem which is what you found. I also would like to let you know that even with it adjusted correctly you may find from time to time that it may be just alittle jurky at the initional engagement. What I have found that worked for me was to run 10-40 full synthetic AMSOIL. With this oil I found the clutch shutter was eliminated on my bike. See ya at RD2.

CRF, thanks! Adjusting the clutch cable did make it much better, but was not eliminated. I opened up the clutch cover and insected the basket and friction plates, the basket looked pretty good and the friction plates did not seem to bad. I soaked my new clutch in LUCAS Semi Synthetic, so I'll use that for now, but my next shot was going to be some AMSOIL as I have heard great things about it. Thanks for the info, much appreciated!

You should soak the plates with the same type of oil you plan on running.

i owned a 01 426 and the clutch action was horrible. Some guys welden an extension to the actuator arm giving it more leverage,if you know someone in the fabrication biz they could make one for ya im sure. It helps a lot.

Thanks for all the help guys, but looks like Im sending the bike to the mad scientist as the motor seized on my way to work Tuesday. Total Bummer! Ive only had the bike a month!!! So...anyone know if an 02 YZ 426 has better clutch action, Im thinking of just buying a whole other bike and doing a complete motor swap. Seems like I can find a complete bike for around $1500- $2200 from what I have found.

Oooof. Seems that seizing 426's is the theme lately. My buddies did the same thing at round 1. Sorry friend.

Story of my life Kyle, but hey there is always a bright side of things. Im going to end up buying a whole other bike like I was talking about so I can get my street legal ride going again, but meanwhile I want to use my old motor as a guinea pig to work on from the bottom up and get running again. Its time that I learn what this whole 4 stroke motor thing is all about. Time to get the hands dirty and learn!

Sorry to hear about your bike. I'm the one Kyle was talking about earlier. My 01 426 seized Saturday morning at round 1. Don't know what happened yet, really don't feel like getting into the engine. The best fix I found for it was to buy a Honda 450X. No more kicking that temperamental beast. Good luck in whatever you do with it. If you're looking for parts, hit me up. May be willing to part it out. Lots of aftermarket stuff on it.

I might be interested, but at the current moment Im looking for another YZ that is running so I can do a motor swap on it. Could you shoot a photo or maybe list a few parts so I can get an idea of what you have? Then maybe afterwards we can both shake our heads looking at our broken bikes. LOL
