So Phil & Bill took Bill's Son William & my Son Joe out for a little fun on the mighty Fraser River following NCECA week... they were looking for a Sturgeon... found several... HONKERS!
Think they had fun??? Here's Phil, and the Guide Yves, and our Joe:

And here's Bill and his Son William:

And our Joe again, - (who is still smilin) with Phil behind the camera...

So I think we've found a pretty good fishin guide, in Yves, if you're heading up this way... I think Phil & Bill might vouch for him...

Holly
PS - Phil, I think I might not have a picture of the really big one? Heck, there were so many... Did I miss the pic of the 8 footer?

Holly,

I love that photo of Joe. I have to admit I had to work with him a little but he is a quick study. He tried to make it look like he was working hard, like you see in this one:

but after a little while he kind of opened up to the camera and it became easy to see what was really going on, like you see in this one:

It looks like you didn't get a copy of the shots from my camera and I missed the ones from Joe's camera. We'll have to come up with a plan to sync everything.

I guess the fish you asked about was this one:

It looks pretty sweet in these shots too.

It sure was fun fishing with him and the Campbell boys. I told Bill (Campbell) afterwards that when you consider how we just made out in your neck of the woods, and last year on Lake Okeechobee, he and I are batting 1000 in the fishing department.

I loved it and would do it again in a heart beat. Like I just wrote to Bill Boyd...."Bill, Wow is right. My son Phil is drooling at the mouth over the missed opportunity and I think quite sorry he didn't take me up my offer to fly him out. He wants to book a trip tomorrow. I know I'll be back and will check you out. I have so much to say about this trip but am turning into a pumpkin quick. I got my fishing photos up tonight and will have to work on the others and words later. Check out this "page in process": http://puttgarden.com/family/fish/3...1-12/index.html Phil"

Until I can get back to it I'll just say "Hang in there and for now here's lookin' at you!"

Looks like a great trip Phil. May I suggest Muskies for your next one. A four foot fish that jumps like a bass is fun. It takes some luck to get there when they are biting but you and Bill might just have it.

It's a completely catch and release fishery, William. They are measured, and tagged for research, (if they had not already been tagged from a previous catch) given photo ops & put back for next time! It was great to hear that many of the eleven they caught had not already been tagged, which speaks well of the viability of the fishery! It's big business around here, and it makes for a pretty amazing day -- even if you only catch 2 of them in the day... never mind an amazing continuous pile of them like the very lucky Hamling/Campbell/Mckeen crew did!

PS - they do come right out of the water too, when fighting the hook! And they even breach on their own like whales...

Thanks for the info Holly, that is interesting.

I had visions of Phil putting them om a stringer, slinging them over his back, and walking home with them.

Actually, because they are too big for any of the clients to transport, I wondered if the guide got to keep them as a "tip." Their food value must be several hundred dollars each.

Awwwww!

Too bad about that, huh William?

I was hoping to sample a Sturgeon smoothie sometime if Uncle Phil stops in to visit me this coming summer.

Just a quick combo of 12 oz. of cheap beer, maybe a dash of CMC and Tobasco sauce, and a pound of Sturgeon whipped up in my Vita-Mix blender, er, I mean my Bass-O-Matic 6000, and PRESTO! A fresh healthful fish drink!

Gosh, if Uncle Phil had everyone over for a three day party again I'm sure just ONE sturgeon could keep the whole crew going for at LEAST the first two days of fun!

I guess there's just no reasoning with those Fish and Game Preservation Officers.

Mike,

Aren't Muskie the fish of 10,000 casts? It sounds like a lot of work. But I've heard them say ".... even a bad day fishin' is better than a good day at work."

William,

Like Holly said, it is completely catch and release. They take and record measurements of the length and girth of each fish caught.

They scan the fish with an electronic wand to read it to see if it had been tagged before. If not they insert a chip of sorts (I guess) into it's body behind the head using a big syringe of sorts.

We actually caught 12 fish. 6 had been tagged before. The remainder were "Virgin Sturgeons" and got "stuck" for the first time.

I've never seen a tagging arrangement like this before. While it was going on I couldn't help wonder if there was fish rights group somewhere protesting this rather intrusive procedure.

Phil,
Several years ago, I spent two years going hard after Muskies. Never even saw one which is odd since they are famously curious and will follow baits up to the boat even when they are not biting. Then in one week we got 8 of them in the 18 to 26 lb. range and our favorite guide brought in a 38lb. The first went to the smoker and the rest including the big one were released. I figured with the success you and Bill have had you'd probably hit the week of the big bite on the first try.
Koz
I think smoked fish would be the way to go for a smoothie.

Holly,

Getting back to fishing....

Jesse Hull just wrote to Bill and me:

Subject: Lake Sturgeon - Wolf River, Wisconsin
Hey you two,
We're still working in the urban agriculture field, growing fish and veggies. A friend of mine sent me this and after seeing the photos on Phil's site, I thought you guys might like it...

It was good to hear from him and to see he's still lurking around.

If you follow the links you can get to a discussion of spear fishing for sturgeon on Lake Winnebago.

Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources

SOME ICE WOULD BE NICE!
Saturday is opening day of the 80th consecutive sturgeon spearing season on the Lake Winnebago system in the modern era. As always, ice and water clarity are key factors, and here is the latest from Ron Bruch, fisheries supervisor in Oshkosh:

So this was in the paper last week, Phil & Bill!
over 1000 lbs, and 13 feet of white sturgeon... Same place you guys were. So do you think you should come back to better those puny catches you guys managed?

This link also has a video of getting it in - which might take you back to a happy day here on the River... all very cool
http://metronews.ca/news/vancouver/...ear-chilliwack/

What I want to know is ... did you smooch the fish as you let them go, like this guy does??? ewwww.

Holly,

Kieth and I had to watch this twice - nice catch and for us a nice break away from our day of production.

Holly,

Thanks for the video link. Watching it I could feel the rush of the Fraser River under the boat, my arms throbbing as if they were going to fall off, the thrill of landing one of these babies and the great time I had with Joe and the Campbell boys.

Phil

PS It looks like the river was quite a bit higher than when we went.....and warmer too.
