Hi all,

I am a crystalline glaze potter for four years now. i started at UW when i was a student there, and since i havent been able to get it just right i just keep on tryin.

i use a crytalline glaze thats about cone 7, but i find that almost all the info here is completely pertinent. My glaze still gets tweeked here and there, sometimes for better, sometimes for worse (usually when i have a show that week).

I'm really looking forward to reading all the threads, but its a crazy time of year as i'm sure you all know. I'm hoping if i can't find answers in the archives you all will put up with me asking possibly already anwered questions, or at least pointing me in the right direction. (yes i know there is a search button, it doesn't always like me)

Thanks so much for putting this wonderful forum together and keeping this communitly alive, i hope to have many interesting conversations with you all.

Sarah,

Let me chime in and say "Welcome, welcome". usually one of the pros would do that but they are mostly off at sales venues trying to make a living at it.

I think I can answer your question. The reason you are in love with it, like me, is that once in a while it throws you a bone sort of like this one.

It keeps you coming back for more.

Welcome to the Forum!
Do not be intimidated by the kind of results that Phil gets. A lot of people get very good results, but few get results as spectacular as the pot he posted.
There is nothing wrong with cone 7, and there is a lot to be said for firing to lower temps. I fire to cone 8. However, you might want to try some different recipes if the one you are currently using just isn't doing it for you.
Ask all the questions that you want, we don't mind repeating answers.

Welcome Sarah. I assume those of us who will be in Seattle for NCECA may well get to meet you then. Of course you have the wonderful Ginny Conrow right close by for inspiration, which will surely help you along your journey even though you are firing at a lower temp (for now - watch out for the "maybe I'll just go 30 degrees higher bug" that can bite - and keep biting).
There are many on the Forum who fire in your range, so I'm sure you'll find plenty of good pointers along the way as your work evolves.
If you're ever up my way, do stop in -- only 2.5 hours north of Seattle.
Cheers,
Holly

thanks all for your wonderful words of welcome and encouragement. I do look forward to meeting some of you at nceca. Ill be at ginny's friday night, as im in the wait list for the actual workshop.

I probably do fire to cone 8. I should throw a cone in there today when i fire and just see what it says. I always told my teachers it was 7, cause i wouldnt get in trouble that way (university of washington). But that was 3 years ago and tho i havent changed my glazes much, i know really its probably higher.

Id love to come visit you next time im up thata way Holly, you do such beautiful gracefull work!

And Phil, are you just trying to make us jealous with that amazing pot? . Just georgous!

Sarah
