Topie: Best Album Of 1980? Poll #2 VOTE HERE TOO! Page: 1 2

IanWagner I'm a major fan of Scary Monsters, Crocodiles, Get Happy, Live and Demolition, and it utterly kills me not to vote for The Black Album, but I have to vote for the one that does the Black's sprawl even better (and London Calling's as well). Sandinista! is one of the most influential albums on my consciousness. I literally love it.

hrtshpdbox Get Happy, in a class by itself.

Bubba Ho-Tep Bowie for me. Probably the last time I'll vote for Bowie until Tin Machine.

artie Even though Diana f-d up the true mix by Edwards and Rodgers, this is still the pinnacle of her work. Not the least of which due to the strength of the material by the Chic boys.

I believe the true, intended "Chic" mix became commercially available years ago, but I haven't seen it. I'd love of to hear it.

MoogDroog Gotta be Dexys from that list

Listened to the Feelies album last night and that was very cool

Summ-a-Briz great list.
Gotta vote EC here. His whole career for pretty much the next 20 years starts here.

Yeah, that is on the Deluxe. I can upload it, and great choice.

(I hope Get Happy does not win this)

Summ-a-Briz who voted Feelies?
March 31st, 2008 12:23 PM
Jon I'm gonna go with "Scary Monsters," though it PAINS me not to vote for "Crocodiles." I'll get the Bunnymen later on.
March 31st, 2008 12:24 PM
Fancy Lad Sandanista? Really? I listened to half of one of the songs from that once and it is a complete disgrace to the spirit of punk rock so I cannot in good conscience vote for it. Nor can I even look at Get Happy!! here without feeling a little ashamed because I too have harbored the wildly unforgivable hope that I might someday be able to play music like a black person. I feel sorry for you lost causes who have followed the painfully white and uncoordinated beating of your arrhythmic hearts and voted for Get Happy (for which I never am conceding to type the lame double exclamation points again)!!

Had to go with the Feelies here. Yeah -- Television Jr. But the jittery wounded nerd stuff here seems a lot more AUTHENTIC (groans please remain seated) than EC, even tho they probably stole a lot from him and also Neu, Television, Bowie, Talking Heads, etc. But there is just some killer, killer guitar here. Velvets rips for sure (you thought I forgot them!!), but hyperspeed, like a hummingbird's wings. Such a consistent blur of sound that it's hard to discern whether there is actually movement there. Bill Million and Glen Mercer (or is it the other way around?) also have a really involved guitar interplay happening, much more so than Verlaine/Lloyd, I would argue (and am) -- it's like one couldn't exist without the other. Plus they get an incredible mixture of tones. The band's sense of dynamics is really extraordinary -- the persistence of the off-kilter beats (hey! crazy rhythms!) and how the group goes from a frenetic symphony of twitching nerves to just these huge swaths of silence (I totally ripped that coinage from Dave Marsh). And their "Everybody's Got Something to Hide Except for Me and My Monkey" is one of the all-time best Beatles rips! Play it for your girlfriend who likes Across the Universe NOW!!

So then, the Feelies in 1980! Second in my series of votes where I actually tell you why I like something and second in your series of totally indifferent reactions!

That is some of the funniest shit you have EVER said. Good, good form today.

That Feelies is indeed great.

Summ-a-Briz OK, so "I Can't Stand Up for Falling Down" has more than a little of the Committments in it, but come on, Laura Nyro and Dusty are white girls and they can sing. Van can sing. They have soul. It's not like Elvis is Rick Astley.

Tunes like King Horse and Opportunity are straight up white boy pop genius.

Yeah, he just means you hear the white-boy effort in EC.
That original Sam and Dave I Can't Stand Up is amazing.

Becky You made me choose between The Mac Live and Sandinista.
BAH!
March 31st, 2008 01:46 PM
bungfungus I voted Sandinista. Like eating a plate full of lobster, fried chicken and hard-boiled eggs for Sunday lunch at the Buffet Barn. Unexpected and disparate but satiating tastiness. And is that some rap I hear on there?

Would that he still were with us, perhaps we should speak far less of crappy Weezer albums.

My favorite Nirvana song is "Curmudgeon." I also really like "Oh, the Guilt." They were really good that day.

northcountryboy Due respect to Costello, for a solid songbook, some strong production work and for writing Wendy James an LP.. but, as a performer/interpreter/artist-in-his-own-right, he's much over-celebrated.

Speak for yourself. And I ain't even necessarily talking about messing around with guitars and all. You should see me jump rope.. it's really something.

Anyway, there's a funky-as-shit British-made album on this very list which by itself could conclusively prove that not all musicians with white skin need be confused, fuckin' frustrated bedroom palers (closet-queen cowboys anguishing over wanting to be indians)..
It's just that none of these fuckers .. bar Moog.. are voting for it.

Can't cast a vote.. 'cause I'm all polled out.. and 'cause some of the records being polled lately mean way too much to me to see them lagging behind boring shit like 'Get Sappy'..
-- who cares what wins? I do --
..and 'cause it's much too hard of a time to seperate 'Demolition' and 'Searching For The Young Soul Rebels' anyway.

Rather than talk Dexys here, I'll just wait 'til I got my thread ready.. tooled up with needledrops of the original singles and shit. The time I spend at the PC at present is mostly being spent on that and some other things hopefully to be unleashed on TRR sometime soon.
