I'll probably change my opinions with re-listening and discussion! Happens frequently around here!!

The Crush All Boxes mixes shine another light on (half of) this material. For me, Teenage Wind is worth the price of admission to YAWYI alone. It's like the contemporary version of Who Needs the Peace Corps.

Jon Hunt Crap, see? That's how little I know about this phase of Zappa's career. I had no idea such a thing even existed. I need to do a "Crush All Boxes" cover, don't I? With the Tinseltown sleeve?

December 28th, 2010 01:06 PM
Jon Hunt Christ, and one for "Chalk Pie" too, and "Warts 'n' All."
December 28th, 2010 01:45 PM
IanWagner Killer work on Tinseltown.
December 28th, 2010 01:49 PM
Jon Hunt Thank you! And for completists / alternate-universists, here is Crush All Boxes as it was intended (virtually):

S Giacomelli Bitchin'.

Jon Hunt Ian: I was TOTALLY WRONG about "You Are What You Is." 'Twas so long ago that I spent time with it. Any record with JIMMY CARL BLACK on it is a good record.

IanWagner There's a few cuts that I despise, but overall, that and Mothers Of Prevention are the vocal-oriented albums of that decade that bear favourable comparison to the 60's albums.

I used to really like "Them or Us" too but again, that was a LOOOOONG time ago, and I bet I *don't* like it this time around.

Isn't "Harder Than Your Husband" freakin' sublime? This album is one of my faves but it's sometimes an exhausting listen, there's just so much going on. I chalk it up to enthusiastic overdubbing abandon since this was the first record to be completed at his home studio.

edit: And the Doors pastiche is hilarious too. So much to say about this album!
December 28th, 2010 03:31 PM
IanWagner Yeah, Them Or Us has some good stuff too.
December 28th, 2010 05:41 PM
Jon Hunt Okay - I did one for Chalk Pie.

I used the photography session that Zappa used for Them or Us, Shut Up 'n' Play, and a bunch of different '82-ish singles -- found an unreleased photo from that session. Found some typefaces that matched the kind of thing he was using in that era. Used some of his design tricks too -- pulling colors from elsewhere in the photo for the typography, etc. Tried to give it that "early 80s Zappa" feel -- see also "Baby Snakes" and about five other albums.

So it's about as authentic as you can get without being authentic.

Jon Hunt And, finished in FIVE SECONDS FLAT, all 30K of "Ship Arriving Too Late To Save A Drowning Witch."

LAST! Very last. I have to get through the "proper canon" first. But there are some great boot covers -- "The Ark" and "Tis The Season," among others! -- that are worth the restoration.
December 28th, 2010 06:07 PM
Jon Hunt But if stuff comes up in the chronology that you want to request a cover restoration for that I haven't done, please feel free to holler -- I'll get it done ASAP!

S Giacomelli Lovin' the Chalk Pie cover!

The night after this, the group made an appearance on Steve Allen's television show. This was, of course, a return for Zappa to the world of his first mainstream exposure fiv years previously, when he had demonstrated how to "play" a bicycle.

Holy shit! Finally jumping back into listening, and I never even knew this existed! You're filling in gaps I didn't even know I had (that's what she said)

Matinee Idyll (129) I wasn't particularly fond of We're Only In It For The Money - I loved Freak Out!, Absolutely Free (most of all), Lumpy Gravy, Ruben and the Jets, but Money never really clicked for me.

Just now I listened to it and read Ians essay at the same time.

Now I get it, AND I LOVE IT.

That is all.

Next up will be Uncle Meat, never heard before!
