JLYAM Amazing that the whole class rode by this down rider, he was down and not moving. Thanks to the guys that helped him we are all racing for fun.
March 8th, 2011 01:45 AM
DuBato 31S I could not have ridden by that crash, and you really dont know how many actually rode by him. Ryan is a good guy and I'm glad he is going to be ok. We need to look out for our fellow riders. I think that this is a good reason for a throw away.

luvdesertriding thanks for posting

yamikid What people dont get is that in the dust the camera can pick up what a rider cant alwasy see... alothough riding that close to ryan im sure he saw him down but not everyone that had passed ive met and talked to ryan before he made my dads crash famus on youtube haha my dad showed it to all his friends but sad to see a rider layed out like that hope your doing good ryan heal up quick so we can see you at the rest of usdr
March 8th, 2011 08:56 AM
106v U are exactly right I did not see this crash in the race the dust was bad and I guess I was just looking ahead. I feel horrible for not stopping, and apologized to albq guy for not stopping, i just did not notice. The camera makes it look pretty obvious but like I said during the race I did not even notice. I am sorry once again. I was going to cut it out of my video so I did not make myself look bad. But albq guy( the down rider) asked me if I had a video of him laying on the trail. So to albq guy I am sorry. To the rest, the camera made it look more obvious than it was I apologize to my usdr family.
March 8th, 2011 09:07 AM
106v I knew people would look down on me for passing a downed rider without seeing if he was ok. If you watch the video I don't even turn my head. It looks bad but like I said I did not even see this till I watched the video when I got home.

That was not flyinryan on the ground this vid is from race 2 vet novice. On the ground was albqguy who drove 750 miles just to crash in the first two miles of the race. Poor guy. He was ok and made the journey home in one piece. He is a trooper. He is still committed to coming to the rest of the season. He is my hero! Lol

ajetmech I know I will stop for a downed guy anytime. If I cant stop then I slow of the thumbs up. Ryan is a very good friend of ours but like Bartel said in the dust the rider my or may not see what the camera sees. Something else to think about is on a start you dont know how many folks are behind you and it may be more dangerous to stop. In race two on S1 Novice line I saw a few guys down on the start but with the dust I made the choice to keep going and as soon as I reached the hill I told the check worker at the top there were downed riders. Last year when they combined race race one and race two my son was lost in the dust and T-boned a guy that stopped his bike in the middle of the trail. When there is not any dust or poses a safety hazard then there should not be any reason why someone doesnt check on a fellow racer. Ive heard stories of Pro's stopping to help one another. Heck a few years ago DuBalato stopped for my son when he lost it off that fire road hitting those whoops when we raced it the other direction.

KUDLA 21 Like I told him privately, its a learning experience.

"You only learn how to fix your bike when it breaks"

(thats my new quote since I ONLY learn from making mistakes)

Not looking down on you at all, I,m sure I have raced passed a down rider also, the heat of the battle also plays a part in what you see and do. By not editing that out shows that you are a good guy and have good intentions. It looked like Ryan on the ground I was looking for that AC/DC helmet.
March 8th, 2011 11:39 AM
Bartel i would have told the check one workers if i would have seen the crash. Watching the video it is hard to see how i missed it. anyway i am glad he is fine and he is going to be making round two. maybe next time i will be in front of him.. lol.. no chance he is fast...
March 8th, 2011 11:53 AM
ajetmech Ryan is still Vet Beg. so he is in race 1 still. From what he said he was going to try to make a cameo for round 2.

March 8th, 2011 05:32 PM

Watching the video, if you really didn't see him, then it's hard to see how you didn't run over him! I'm not calling you out, just voicing my opinion. Hopefully if this happens to you some day you will be seen and people will stop for you and you will also be as fortunate as my cousin was to walk away from it.

March 8th, 2011 09:32 PM
Bartel ya i have been down before and people stopped. and i have stopped for people as well. I am really glad i did not hit him.

i have gotten a lot of **** for this video. i could have easily cut it out or not posted it. Paul had asked me if i had any footage of him so i put it in there. I said i was sorry.

March 8th, 2011 09:52 PM
alamojimmy Most of you already know that Bartel and I are friends so me chiming in won't surprise you. What most of you don't know though is that I know had he realized what was going on he absolutely would have stopped. Last year, while on a fire road, a guy came flying by him, hit a big rock off of the trail and yard saled for about 30 ft. Bartel was running in top ten but he stopped, turned around and hung out with him for about 10 minutes until the dude was good to go again. I am telling you that he would have stopped had he known what was up. Keep in mind dust, it was Bartel's first race in the Novice class, it was the first mile or so of the first race of the season and everyone was hauling ass. Nobody can say what they would have seen or what they would have done in that situation. Take the dude at his word that he didn't know what had happened. The guy that was actually down doesn't seem to have a problem with it. Let's just let it go and try not to judge as easy as that is to do on a message board. I am not trying to piss anyone off or "Back up" my bro. I am just telling it as I know him and the situation. Glad that Albguy is up and running and plans to make it out to round II. Remember that we all call ourselves family around here so please let's act that way. Thanks for reading my 2 cents. You guys are the best.
March 8th, 2011 11:49 PM
Bartel thanks jimmy.

jimmy. remember that race when you thought it would be easier to walk back to the truck in the middle of the race. becuase you got stuck going off the track

that is the same race i helped the paramedics carry that kid down that canyon after staying with him for over an hour. they could not get a quad up to where he crashed so we had to carry him about a quarter mile down the canyon so that we could get him to the rescue vehicle.

i dont remember what the kids name was but he was in the begining of one of kudas videos. I believe he broke his femur. (not sure on spelling).

we are all family here. no hard feelings. if you see a down rider you should stop to see if he is ok. and if you are the down rider you should give a thumbs up quickly if you are ok and just need a min to recover.

we are all competitive or else why would we race. but none of us are gettin paid for this and safety is pretty important. the guys working the track can not cover the entire thing. they rely on the racers to notify them if there is a problem.

so go fast race safe and lets have a good time. i hope the people i did battle with in the video enjoyed it. especially that guy on the KTM that i chased down for like 20 miles. lol. i just could not get around you. great racing.

and to the guy (i think his number is 16s) that was a great sprint to the finish. I just closed my eyes and pinned it. lol. probably faster than i should have been going but it was a great time and a great way to end the race.

see you all for round 2.

Bartel, No worries bro! I commend you for posting this video. I'm sure it was a difficult decision. It totally depicts you as the bad guy, but as it was stated earlier: "The camera doesn't blink".
I hope you have a good race in round 2.

He had a Monster helmet on. You said it bartel was racing not looking, I'm sure we have all done it at some point in time. He seems like a stand up guy. I totally agree about the throw away also, if a rider knew he could stop and not destroy his series points chase then more riders would stop. This series is all about the points so it is only fair to give a good guy a chance to catch up.

ABQ Guy Just to let you all know I am fine I told Bartel to check his helmet cam and I was, maybe on it, I was pinned when the back end came around and did a 70 mph lawn dart "Knocked my ass out" when I came too the race was long gone I got on my bike and started back in the race but my back was popped out and hurting to much to race, I went and got checked out by rescue and was ok so I packed up and left early back to New Mexico. A very long drive with your back out. Back is all good now and I may have to miss next race but will be at RND 3. I have been riding desert since 1968 and that was by far my worst get-off, I had'nt gone down since 1998 and I was due for a biggie. I will be sporting a new helmet since this one is toast. But I am A OK, man is'nt desert racing fun.....
March 9th, 2011 12:04 PM
ABQ Guy And for the record there was somebody there when I came too, and man was I wobbly hehe I must have been out for a few minutes but I am fine. Please and I mean please dont give Bartel a hard time over this. I know Tony "Bartel" is a good guy and a freind of mine so please leave him alone "it is what it is" and I am sure if it were to happen again he would stop for sure. I am really OK no BS. My cousin Eric will be missing next round so I will more than likely stay home but will be there for RND 3. I will more than likely be on my 450, it handles woops much better than my 2 stoke but when I got out there my fork seal was leaking so I raced my 2-stroke....OUCH. C-YA in the DEZ at rnd 3

flyinryan Bartel,......and the rest for that matter......I've been using go pro for a few years now and those cams see a lot that riders don't. They see 170+ degs. I have seen many things on my cam that I missed in person. Don't be too hard on yourself or him.
March 9th, 2011 01:27 PM
ABQ Guy My cousin Eric Torgeson AKA TORGYMON got a great pic of the crash while it was happening and I am playing LAWN DART and my bike is upside down in the air, it is ugly. I will try and crop it and post it later. I had talked to Bartel on the phone and he said he saw the bike but not me, "I think he was looking for me off the trail" and was not looking on the trail. he had NO idea I was there. when I got home to N.M. on Monday mornnig I sent him a message to see if I was on his camera "LAID OUT" and sure enough there I was taking a NAP. I know Bartel would have stopped if he would have seen me. Bartel is one of the GOOD GUYS!!! I have noticed that sometimes in the heat of the race you may glance around and miss what is on the trail for that second or 2 and I am sure that is what happened.
March 9th, 2011 02:00 PM
Bartel good talking to you mark. hope to meet ya for a beer in the desert soon.

ryan how you feeling today?

March 9th, 2011 03:34 PM
flyinryan Good......might get to go home today. I've done what they wanted me to now it's up to the last x-ray they took this morning.

Hey Mark if you are missing round II because you don't feel like you have a pit or place to stay or will be by yourself, please don't feel that way. We will take care of you when you get here. All you have to do is let me or Tony know. It was good to meet you on Sunday and hope to see you whenever you do make it back out.
March 9th, 2011 04:43 PM
ABQ Guy I will have too miss next race but it has nothing to do with my crash. But I will be looking forward to rnd 3. And Jimmy maybe we can have a beer then. Just remember that the BEST people race Desert "BIG HEARTS AND OPEN ARMS". I must say that the crash was Brutal "OUCH" and to FLYIN RYAN get well so we can all see you back out there. And a Big thanks to the guy that was there when I came too, boy was I out of it. he must have thought I was nuts because I came too was moaning on the ground for a minute then stood up and fell backwards got back up started my bike and got back in on the course. So if ANYONE knows who that guy is please tell him thank you for me. It took 3 days for my back to pop back in place and other than a few bruises I feel really good. I knew when I got back on the bike that my head was not right so I just headed for the pits. I will try to post pic of crash now
