How exciting and thanks for the info Doc. I think the two of us have something to talk about during UF13 other than our beloved movie

It's just too bad I don't have time to go visit these locations. Well that means I'll have to come back some day

hi Peppe:

Nope, the B24 Liberator site is a different location, about 3 miles N of Guadalupe peak. -- Its a difficult climb over a full day even in the best of conditions.... The site I'm referring to is a B-29A Superfortress that went down on 30 JUN 1945, while on a night-nav training mission between Davis-Monthan AFB and Mobile Alabama. This site is relatively MUCH less strenous to attain, and is only a couple of miles south of the junction of hwys 54 and 60. Most of that distance is drivable via smooth dirt roads -- easily done in a morning or afternoon. -- NOT so with the B24 site!!

.... You might be more interested however, in a site where an SR-71 Blackbird went down in 1970, about 20 mi NW of the Gazebo film location.... it's easily accesible via dirt roads in the flat desert east of El Paso. takes about a 2.5 hr round trip from the Gazebo.

Wow Doc, that sounds really exciting and quite an adventure to hike up to see it

Is it this the plane wreck you mean? Youtube

It's just too bad I have other plans both before and after the UF13, so I'm out

So have y'all decided against going to the train spot? If theres not time for the whole group to go together I would love to go possibly the day before or day after. Bruce do you know the land owner or were you just gonna hop the fence from the North side?........

theJason:

If i can get an xtra day on this trip, i'd be happy to get ya to the train site -- and yes, the best approach is from the north, ranch road 652, about 7.5 miles west of orla.

there's a new potential problem about increased security, though--

very rcently, a new oil pipeline has been built/buried between and parallel to the road and the trackbed at the site. --not only has this operation obliterated the site, that is to say that its probable that most, if not all the remnants/souvenirs of filming are lost, -- but one would reasonably expect the security level of the area would be increased to protect the considerable investment. previously, the gate to the road leading to the site from RR652 was chained, but never locked. i'm betting its locked now, but the ony way to find out, is to go check it out!

btw, there's an amazingly well-preserved B-29 crash from WW2 about 50 miles west of the train site, and about 9 miles south of Guadalupe peak, off the road from el paso, hwy 62.

-- so, if i can squeeze another day off, -- that monday -- i'd be up to givin it a try.

I have not been to the train site, but I know there is very little to see. I think the tracks are gone. The sulphur plant they serviced closed years ago.

So have y'all decided against going to the train spot? If theres not time for the whole group to go together I would love to go possibly the day before or day after. Bruce do you know the land owner or were you just gonna hop the fence from the North side? I'm gonna be in Odessa on that Thursday. Originally I was gonna meet up with y'all at parachute school and on to Chatas but then I was gonna have to head back to Huntsville that evening. But now I'm getting so excited I might try to hang with y'all on Saturday too.

I have had to make some changes for numerous reasons, but here they are.
Movie shown in Midland Thursday night, at the Hotel in our own viewing room
Stay in Alpine Friday night at the Hampton Inn.
Saturday night stay at the Super 8 in Clint (which is basically new and was very nice last time and close to San Elizario.) See the other posts for booking info and book soon.
