Posted October 26th, 2009 00:51 IPFollowing Ray's post I would like to initiate a discussion: what would we like to see here in addition to already existing threads:
- threads for different techniques (sketch, portrait, landscape and so on).
-tutorials
-anything else

Posted November 11th, 2009 22:32 IPI used to teach classes and put up painting tutorials online. While I run a brick and mortar business and an online business and my time is somewhat limited, I would be willing to help in some capacity by offering on-the-spot critiques for budding artists if that would help?

Many thanks for you response and for your offer to help.
Your help would be highly appreciated. Critique is a crucial component of the process, I for one can testify to having a bias towards my own work , which is not a good way to self-improvement. I think one way of doing this would be to open a "critique" thread
The basic goal of this forum is to help people who are interested in photography and photo art to communicate, to share ideas, to learn and generally speaking to have fun.
Of course, there is no obligation to play a part, everybody has real obligations in life....fun and games come distant second.
To put things in perspective, at this point we are a bit slow, it might be a while for the things to speed up. In addition, we are still looking for the best format i.e. things that would be of general interest.

Posted November 12th, 2009 11:48 IPIs it possible to set up some kind of a reminder system?
When I was busy and away from splitting pixels it was easy to forget when the challenges were starting or when voting was taking place.
I know everyone gets lots of email, but perhaps one email announcing that voting is taking place and that the next challenge will start in a day?
With the photo art challenge lasting 2 weeks that would only be 2 emails a month. I believe something of this sort could be set up through Yahoo groups, and I'm sure there are other ways.
If I am way off base, please forgive me.

Is there a way that has been used in the past?

Posted November 12th, 2009 12:03 IPI like the critique idea, honest opinions can only improve your efforts, but we should remember that most of us only do this sort of thing as a hobby, .Minor skin grafts can be performed on pigs by covering any cuts and
grazes with thin strips of bacon.

Theoretically the reminder system sounds attractive, but setting it up could be challenging. We currently have about 200 members. I don't think that everyone of them would like to be reminded of photo art challenges....going through the list to select current photo art thread participants is time consuming... creating a short list, perhaps, but that list would require constant revisions....I would prefer not to go there at the moment.... what if I put a vote date on the actual thread title, would that work?

My understanding that in the past new members were mostly recruited by inviting friends to join. Tom used to put animated slideshows using challenge images on youtube, but I'm not sure how did that worked out.....visibility of a singe clip on youtube may not be high.
I suppose advertising on different photo art forums could be an option....
We are listed in Google but not visible in any searches, if anybody has a web page, a link to the forum could help to get higher ranking in Google.

Yes, I guess that would be a big hassle.
I think the idea of putting the end/voting date in the thread title is a GREAT idea. It would at least help the people who popped in for a look. (It would certainly help me. )
I think the big thing is promotion though. And for that I am at a loss.
