Posted August 27th, 2007 00:50 IP HI everyone.
this is probably an easy one for you lads and lassies in Spitting pixel land but here goes.I have promised two friends of mine whom have just become Grandparents for the first time,an A3 family portrait including Jack, the newest member of the Dando clan.My intention was to do one of them super duper portraits like I have seen in the local photographers window where the subjects are on a white background and only their heads and shoulders(and the baby obviously) would be in view.I figure its some kind of layer mask but for the life of me-and I have been trying(My mum says I am very trying) to get the effect but failed.I must add that I havent taken the photo yet but wanted to perfect a way of doing it first.
hopefully you kind people will know what kind of effect I am after and will be able to help me out how to get it.I promise once I know(with your help) I will take the photo and you can then tell me what you think.
thanks very much
regards
Kenny

Posted August 27th, 2007 17:03 IP Kenny depends on the effect your are after, you could easily create a white vignette in PS but it will still reveal some of the background from the original image. Another way is to simply extract the subjects (various methods like quick mask, lasso and pen tool) then copy onto a white background. But the best way is to take them against a properly lite white background. If it does not come out pure white in the photo you can easily lighten it using a levels or curves adjustment layer . If you could post an example of what you have in mind i can give your more accurate advice.

Posted August 27th, 2007 19:51 IP Hi Neal
I havent taken the photos yet so I cant post examples of what I mean.I have to arrange for everyone to be available for the photos. What you have said sounds like a good idea and I will have a practice on old photos first to get the hang of it.
Thanks again
best regards
Kenny
