Posted September 28th, 2010 10:08 AM IP Our house is surrounded by trees, which is awesome, but you can imagine the blanket of leaves we have in the fall! I've heard of people using leaves for mulch, and read online how good of a mulch it makes. But then one of my friends claims it ruined her garden... Have any of you used leaves? How did you do it, and what was the result? Did it seem to have any negative affect on your garden? Gina- happy wife of Lavern, blessed Mama to Amanda, Lane, Trent, and Allison

Posted September 28th, 2010 11:35 AM IP At home (meaning before I was married ) we had several flower beds that we would mulch with leaves. We put down a thick layer of newspaper first, then the leaves. We always mowed them with a mower first to chop them up good. I'm thinking we also used them on the garden with no negative side effects. How did your friend think it ruined her garden? Deb

Posted September 28th, 2010 11:45 AM IP She said things didn't grow well anymore, and she blamed it on the leaves... I did read that leaves can eventually pull nitrogen out of your soil, but I figured a good layer of chicken litter would take care of that. But they would've put that on their garden, too...?? Posted September 28th, 2010 01:58 PM IP We have mountains of leaves in the fall. My husband mulches them with the mower and dumps them on the garden. Then last year on a calm day he burned the leaves and my garden was a WOW garden this year. I am still getting tomatoes and peppers. Amber~

Posted September 28th, 2010 02:36 PM IP We rake allot of our leaves into our garden and then burn most of them...I'd say the ashes are just as good for your dirt as the leaf it's self. Our garden usually does pretty good, but we also have a movable chicken coop that gets moved around in the garden all fall ,winter and in the spring till we plant.... I don't suggest leaving them whole if you do plan to mulch with them...you will have yourself a fabulous mat on your garden come spring. Especially so if it is a pile of leaves and not raked out thinly. Larinda High

Posted September 28th, 2010 09:59 PM IP We had huge piles of leaves at our place because a lawn business dumps there and this spring we put down a thick layer between the rows. WOW. We had literally NO WEEDS. Since they had sat on a pile all winter they were still mostly whole and they were fine. ~Monica, wife to Eldon and mama to Makayla and Michael and Emily

Posted September 29th, 2010 08:54 AM IP ^^ was it hard to tiller up then? That's where we ran into problems...as far as having weeds we didn't have many, but such a mess it was to get that mat tilled in nice enough so we could plant. Maybe we should have done something different? Larinda High

Posted September 29th, 2010 09:40 AM IP We did it after the stuff was up a couple inches. You don't want to get it to thick right around the base of the plants because our squash and zucchini got to wet and just stayed wet then they rotted off We did till some up this fall already and it was ok but we had a big tiller. ~Monica, wife to Eldon and mama to Makayla and Michael and Emily

Posted May 25th, 2011 09:57 AM IP Our garden wasn't just the greatest so we were excited to be able to buy a bagger for our garden tractor knowing we could put the leaves and the grass clippings on the garden and hopefully help the soil. Last year I was so anxious to see our huge crop we would get out of our garden. Well it was horrible. Stuff did not come up, what did come up did not produce all that well...I felt like not even planting this year. Just last week I was talking to a friend and she told me that oak leaves are NOT GOOD for your garden. I never knew that because we always put the leaves on our garden at home and it was fine but we had maple leaves. Apparently leaves are okay for the garden but it depends on what kind of leaves you have. Does anyone else know anything about this? -Valerie
