Posted January 13th, 2011 02:52 PM IP For all you ladies who keep borax and washing soda around for laundery detergent, I just found out from my sister that you can also use them for dishwashing detergent. Just use equal amounts of borax and washing soda, 2 Tbl per load. My sister said she mixes the borax and w. soda with some Cascade powder detergent, and doesn't use quite 2 Tbl. She said she's been using it for 6 months and it works fine! So I will be trying this when my little capsules run out! Mommy to 5

Posted January 13th, 2011 05:30 PM IP If you use just borax and washing soda, they say its good to use a 1/4 cup? of salt or citric acid. I think its on another thread. DeAnna ~ wife to Troy and mama to my 6 greatest blessings

Posted June 29th, 2012 11:03 AM IP I'm guessing the cascade powder is what has the most cleaning power??? I used to have a problem with powdered detergent not dissolving very well, esp. with a cheap brand dishwasher. I use all liquid soap and don't have a problem. I don't put as much in as it says either, and still have clean dishes except if i put something real dirty on the top rack or over load the basket. Jan

Me too. I got excited about it as it worked for my sister, but it left a hazy scum on my glass things and so I am not excited anymore. Could be the water difference on whether it works good or not. Mommy to 5

Posted July 7th, 2012 11:21 AM IP I found something I like much better. The blue dawn and vinegar solution works wonderful. We have really hard water and I'm not sure if that is why it works so well in the dish washer, but there are hardly any suds. My dishes are beautifully clean and shiny. I'm one happy camper! No more buying dishwasher detergent for me! JoAnna

Posted July 9th, 2012 11:59 AM IP I guess I will keep on buying dishwasher detergent. I walked out to the kitchen and found soap suds pouring out from all around the door on the dishwasher. My water must not be hard enough. Good try anyway. LJ Grandmother of 8

Posted July 9th, 2012 08:24 PM IP Just to clarify a little. I take a gallon jug and mix 1 quart of white vinegar, 1/4 cup blue dawn, and fill to the top with water. Mix and let it set overnight. It seems like the longer it sets the less suds it makes. It might have something to do with how hard our water is because I have filled the dispenser full with this solution and then squirted a little blue dawn in it yet for good measure, and have never had a problem with suds. | That sounds better because I mixed equal parts for cleaning and that is what I put into the dishwasher. That small amount of Dawn wouldn't make a lot of suds. I had suds coming out on all sides. It really looked kind of funny. LJ Grandmother of 8

Posted January 24th, 2013 12:52 PM IP I found a recipe that works for me. I read a lot of reviews and a lot of different sites. This site sold me because she said she tried and tried and probably raised her electric bill with all the hot water she used. This is the version that works the best for her. So I decided - hey if someone else went to all that work and I don't have to I'm going to try it.
Here is the recipe.
1 cup Arm & Hammer washing soda (same as used in homemade laundry detergent)
1 cup Mule Team Borax
1/4 Epsom salt (to break down hard water)
1/4 c. Citric Acid (I used Dutch Gel) but any version of Fruit Pectin that has Citric acid in it will work.) This makes the glass shine and leaves it streak free.
1 & 1/2 tsp of Palmolive dish soap
1 & 1/2 cup of water (this is my own variation because I do NOT like powdered dishwasher soap)
Mix the dry ingredients, add the water, stir in the dish soap. Microwave on high at 1 minute intervals until the washing soda and borax are dissolved and not so gritty. Pour into old dishwasher soap bottle. Wa la! I've been using this for about a week now and I love it! Gloria wife to Jason.
