Posted May 30th, 2012 11:02 AM IP A few weeks ago we bought a beautiful couch off of Craigslist...only to discover that it smelled like smoke. We should have just left it there...but that's another story. We've used an extractor on it (sorta like a shampooer) and the smell is still there. I'm planning to coat it with baking soda tonight and then vaccuum it off in the morning.
But I thought in the meantime I'd come on here and ask if anyone has had success getting the smoke smell out of furniture and how you did it. Advice? -Janelle

Posted May 30th, 2012 02:11 PM IP We bought a stuffed rocking chair/recliner at a yard sale. When we got it home, I noticed how smoky it smelled and decided to leave it outside on our porch. It was a breezy, totally open porch with a roof over it. I was thinking I would have to get rid of the chair because it smelled smoky enough that I did not want it in the house.
We didn't get around to hauling it off right away, and eventually I didn't smell anything anymore and decided to bring it inside. Now I've spent many hours rocking my baby in that chair and never got a whiff of smoke from it.
This might not be a very practical way to get the smoke smell out. :-) I can't remember how long it took. I'd guess at least a month, maybe as much as two months. But it didn't cost a penny and it didn't take any energy. And it certainly worked. I am very sensitive to smoke smells, so I'm sure the smell was gone.

Posted May 31st, 2012 07:57 AM IP My brother has an auction company and some of his clients are antique dealers. One couple said they set upholstered furniture or mattresses outside in direct sunlight for a couple days and it bleaches any bad smells out. They say it works even for smoke or pet smells. ::JUDY::

Posted May 31st, 2012 10:50 AM IP Hmm...maybe we'll try that! If I can convice my husband to haul the giant thing back outside. We're having company (family) for a week...arriving tomorrow and we kinda need the couch while they're here. I did the baking soda overnight last night and it seemed to help a little bit. Some friends have something left that they used after a house fire, so I might try that one it before company comes.
And yes...we get TONS of wind here....should do the trick, eh? :-) -Janelle
