Posted April 23rd, 2012 06:50 PM IP So just for fun, how do you make each?
To us, they are the same.
Chips
Rice
Meat an beans
Sour Cream
Cheese
Lettuce
Dressing
I hate when we go through a food line and they have the chips (or crackers ) at the end and I have to go get those before I start my pile, lol. So funny how we all have our way and we all think ours is THE way to eat it ~Monica, wife to Eldon and mama to Makayla and Michael and Emily

Posted April 23rd, 2012 10:04 PM IP Agreed!^^ Taco Salad and Haystacks are not the same thing. Last month, it was my church food group's turn to make lunch at sewing. We made haystacks, but we argued (not in a mad way ) about whether we need crackers/versus chips. There was no doubt in my mind what I thought we needed, but a few of the others thought I was crazy. CRACKERS in haystacks??? What? Turns out that some other few agreed with me and so we just had both. Guess what we had the most left of? tee hee... I tried not to rub it in.
I do like my crackers/ chips first, tho, but otherwise Michelle's list looks about right. ~Freida

Posted April 23rd, 2012 10:17 PM IP Haystacks also need onions, peppers, diced tomato, black olives and ranch dressing. Taco Salad is the cold stuff all mixed already.

Posted April 24th, 2012 08:10 AM IP Taco Salad:
Bottom layer--crushed tortilla chips
Next 2 layers--I like to put the shredded cheese down first so the hot bean and meat mixture melts the cheese, but my dh and other ppl do it opposite
Top layer--salad dressing or sour cream
In my mind, the main difference between taco salad and hay stacks is that there is a rice layer somewhere near the bottom.
Monica, as for your dilemma of the chips being at the end of the line... I mix my salad all up before eating it (if I'm not feeling too embarrassed about being uncivilized ), so it doesn't matter. ~Judi

Posted April 24th, 2012 05:27 PM IP Ok, so I am freaking out. Apparently growing up in Colorado had me more sheltered then I realized! Our church had people from probably 15 different states and taco salad was a staple food . I never heard it called haystacks or made any different then I described until I came to Hilllcrest at 19!! I really thought the admin ladies were off their rockers for making it so strange but I guess it's me ~Monica, wife to Eldon and mama to Makayla and Michael and Emily

Posted April 24th, 2012 11:42 PM IP This is so interesting. I have often wondered the real difference. The only thing i could come up with is Rice. I have NEVER hear of adding crackers to the mix.
We just pretty much eat "taco salad", sometimes in different forms than others. sometimes mixed. sometimes make your own. sometime cold meat. sometimes hot. I never cook rice unless I"m doing it for a crowd. I'd rather have extra lettuce than rice.
Glad to hear the different opinions! Jodie

Posted April 25th, 2012 09:37 AM IP This such an amusing thread! Once again, there's obviously no right way! Growing up, taco salad was always served in a bowl, as part of a meal. Haystack was the main course, set out buffet style. It was just another cultural thing to learn when we came into the Amish/Conservative circle, and I still don't know what label to give my standard Sunday evening supper for guests! It's nice to know I'm not the only one still confused! And the whole crackers thing is new to me, too. But, I actually like the idea, because HAYSTACKS ( ) are such an easy meal for summer evenings, but I don't usually have chips on hand. Posted April 25th, 2012 03:15 PM IP This is interesting! I think it probably gets adjusted by each person that makes them according to their likes and dislikes. I have had them many ways and most of the time they are very good no matter what order they are served in or the list of ingrediants. I listed it how we had it growing up, for our wedding(haystacks) and now how we eat them here at home. The most unusual version I've had was when we took our trip out west and stayed with an Amish family. I don't remember the whole list of ingredients, but that was the first time I really felt like enlightening someone on a dish. I didn't. I know it had just plain dry salt and peppered burger, celery, hard boiled eggs?...can't think of what else, It was VERY good, but very different from what I was expecting when she said we were having haystacks. Posted April 26th, 2012 08:33 AM IP This is amusing!! But I strongly agree that haystacks and taco salad are two totally diferent things!! haystacks needs crackers and rice and cheese sauce. and like Larinda said the Amish lady served, it doesn't have taco seasoning in the meat. Taco salad uses chips and taco seasoned meat and NO cheese sauce to be proper!!
Each to her own! Nate's love Scotty, Trevor, Nekoda's mom
