Posted February 28th, 2011 05:49 PM IP Looking for-a dvd or online system where our 4th grade boy, who is a very quick learner and soaks up knowledge like a sponge, can be challenged and somewhat work at his own pace for the year we are out in Colorado. We are moving out of a wonderful public school system(sniff, sniff) and never paid any attention to home schooling options because I was one of those mamas who thought they would never punish her kids by not letting them go to school.=)(yes I LOVED school). Isaac loves, loves school too and I was amazed that he was open to the idea of home schooling so I am trying to do my research and figure out what would be a good fit for us. A good history program is a must since that is one of his favorite subjects, and he is a whiz at math so that needs to challenging or advance as mastered type program as well. It looks big to me but I thought if I have only one surely I can manage that??!! Education is very important to us,and I will do everything in my power to make sure he is actually learning something, but I have 2 very, very busy toddlers that need a mama's eyes on them at basically all times as well so it'll be a challenge! So if anyone knows of something that sounds like it would work shout it out! Beth

Posted February 28th, 2011 06:10 PM IP Bob Jones is definitely an advanced curriculum. You can check out sample videos of all their curriculum here: Bob Jones distance learning. I'm not sure how it compares to A Beka as far as being challenging, but the thing I like about Bob Jones is that they're very hands on and have a lot of multimedia stuff--they'll go on video field trips or have characters acting out Bible or history stuff. I love that as opposed to a fairly static camera of a teacher teaching in front of a classroom. I don't know about 4th grade, but their kindergarten math is very advanced for kindergarten. Mom of two

Posted March 1st, 2011 10:40 PM IP Homeschooling is cheap as long as you don't do distance learning stuff. If you're looking for cheap online or DVD, you'll probably have to go with a generic curriculum. All the Christian ones are pretty expensive. Mom of two

NO! We could never afford that! We paid a little under $200 for K-5 last year. We buy the books/teachers manuals. We got some extra stuff that we wouldn't have had to get. I think Phonics and Math is around $150 total. Rachal

Posted March 2nd, 2011 08:35 AM IP Ohio has public school online that is called Ohio Virtual Academy. It doesn't cost anything and they give you a computer and pay for your internet. You could check to see if Colorado offers anything like that. I know there are more states than just Ohio that do it, so it would be worth checking into. I know several people who use it and LOVE it.
I am using A Beka (conventional, not distance learning). I am not convinced that it is the "thing" for us.....so we are going to the Homeschool Convention to see if there is anything there looks like something I would like better. Monica

Posted March 2nd, 2011 10:39 PM IP We have used Abeka quite a bit. I still like it the best of a variety of things we've used in the last 7 years. We are using the Abeka Academy for Adrian's 3rd grade this year and he LOVES it. Yes, it is expensive, but they are very thorough and teach them well. For me, it was worth it. And no, I don't know what I'll do next year when my other two boys are at home again and I have to add their school costs to it yet!
I'm coming to the conclusion that anything but public school is just plain down expensive, but it is still worth it, in my opinion. Wait until you have a high school student, then you'll find out what expensive schooling really is, especially if he wants to go on to college!!! However, I will do about anything to keep my boys out of public high school. Travis went to the high school to do his drivers ed the last two weeks and I felt blessed beyond measure to even have the OPTION of home schooling. Talk about high school kids standing around hugging and kissing each other before they go home. Not only that, but the instructor said right out in class that all the instructors LOVE the home schooled kids. I'm telling you, ladies, it is a privilege to home school, even if it's expensive!!! And now I will get off my soap box. Don't mean to hijack the thread here.
You can definitely do it cheaper if you do all the teaching yourself. When we bought books for three boys and I did all the teaching, I think we paid around $700 - $800 for all their books. Mary Faith
