Just to get the conversation rolling- get the tomatoes ready to hurl- I'm pretty content with the box set I've got, containing the original albums and bonus tracks. They were an amazing band at all times, but to me, nobody could recycle a riff or stretch an idea like they could (except the High Llamas). Seems like this will have some interesting early stuff- I haven't listened to the links yet- but as much as I enjoy and respect them, they're not a band I've felt compelled to dig a lot deeper into, beyond the basic catalog and maybe a little bit of representative live stuff. The alternate mixes and takes I've heard have been fine, but not revelatory.

Have at me, I'm sure I'm wrong.

'Twas ever thus.

They're one of my favorite bands, and I think Sly is one of the most important figures in modern musical history. But I agree with you. They released the great stuff, as The Beatles did. The only revelatory extra material I have heard was the bonus cuts on There's A Riot Goin' On.
Still, I'll get this set.

I agree, you probably don't need this set. I look at as how some people got the two cd set of Smile and were fine and some got the 5 cd set and still wanted more.

Sly Stone is a fascinating musical genius to me, in many ways similar to Brian Wilson (both born around the same time, both grew up in California, both musical prodigies) in that they both were going after the "Hit" but on their own terms. The way Sly mixed white and black music styles together was unique.

While not a true "singles" collection, this box does have that feel to it, a lot of mono mixes, etc....also some nice live cuts. Sly really broke the mold back in the day.
