Posted October 3rd, 2012 06:52 PM IP I know we have a not-dead thread, but training camp is underway: a new season is upon us! Rejoice, fellow fans.
Even with Ricky Rubio out probably until December and quite possibly January, expectations are the highest they've ever been in Minnesota. This roster looks like a 7 or 8 seed without Rubio (barring other significant injuries), and--dare I say it!?--maybe like a 3 or 4 with everyone reasonably healthy.
We'll have the solid and sometimes wonderful Luke Ridnour as temporary starter (but probably trade bait once Rubio proves he's healthy) at PG and some combination of JJ Barea, Malcolm Lee, and Russian rookie Alexey Shved backing him up.
At SG we'll have Brandon Roy, at least playing part-time minutes. Chase Budinger seems the likeliest backup, as well as Barea, Lee, or Shved.
Andrei Kirilenko will start at SF, with second-year Derrick Williams and Budinger spending some time there, too.
Power forward is obvious: franchise player Kevin Love, whose stats might decline (with the far better team around him) but whose efficiency is likely to soar. Williams will probably be his primary backup, with newly acquired journeymen Dante Cunningham and Lou Amundson available.
Center is the big, scary third-year Nikola Pekovic who went form a nonentity to a damn-near all-star type player last year. Reports are he has lost a little weight and is in phenomenal shape this year. Scary. Greg Stiemsma, Amundson, and Love are the backups.
I am so excited! yes.

Posted October 5th, 2012 11:05 AM IP We have another rough year ahead of us in Detroit, although we have some good cornerstones to build around: Greg Monroe, Andre Drummond, and Brandon Knight, with Rodney Stuckey and Jonas Jerebko 2 guys who can do a pretty good job on the floor. Maggette and Prince can still help out certain nights, but their days of being consistently good (or at least halfway decent) are over. And Charlie Villanueva hopefully gets traded somewhere or retires, or whatever, just as long as he quits playing basketball.
I dont' like Dwight Howard or the Lakers, but I'm torn, because I'd like to see Nash finally get a ring, and I hate Miami. Our Band could be Your Life.

Posted October 5th, 2012 08:41 PM IP I almost like Detroit!
What I hope, though, is that they don't bother spending any time or energy on Villanueva, Maggette, Jason Maxiell, or even Prince. The lattermost has been the ultimate good soldier, but let's be honest, the 3 spot has to be Jerebko or Kyle Singler or (god forbid) Austin Daye or even some to-be-determined guy.
Similarly, if I am them, I start Andre Drummond from Day One, despite me being the first to say he is nowhere near ready. Nowhere near. He wasn't even especially good at UConn. But he is really talented and there is no sense in fucking around. Let the young guys either grow or fail. If they fail, you get another high pick anyway. No sense in sniffing around the 8th seed only to end up with the 18th pick or something. yes.

Posted October 6th, 2012 06:49 AM IP I think Jerebko can be a really, really good player. I agree about Maggette, Maxiell and Villanueva (that's a good name for a group!). 3 years ago, I would've bet that Maxiell would be a good to great player by this point. It hasn't (nor shall it) happen. They need to just toss those young guys out there and let them gel as a unit. Get your lumps now, maybe get 1 more lottery pick, and in another couple years be really good team.
I missed the part where Darko signed with Boston. He's done pretty good for a bust, eh? He and Fab Melo combined for something like 2 points and 5 rebounds last night. Our Band could be Your Life.

Posted October 6th, 2012 03:35 PM IP Darko will have just enough good moments to fool the Boston media and fans into thinking they'll be the ones to finally unlock the talent. Then he'll pull a hamstring or stub his toe, sit out three weeks, get out of shape, never earn consistent playing time again, sulk, and end up getting cut.
Just a prediction. Not that it's ever happened before (except everywhere he's ever played...).
Of course, KG just might punch him in the face before all the drama unfolds. yes.

Posted October 7th, 2012 04:18 PM IP Well, on paper Golden State looks like they might have what it takes to get at least an 8 seed in the West. Of course this dream almost assuredly rests on a couple of ankles (belonging to Curry and Bogut) and the emergence of Harrison Barnes. Bogut is especially important to the cause, because if he goes down our options at Center become a very young and green Festus Ezili or Jeremy Tyler, or even worse the return of Andris Beidrins. (Although I might prefer moving David Lee over and having Carl Landry start at PF in a Bogut-less scenario.)
We have some real depth with our improved Dubstitutes (not my term), including the versatile Jarrett Jack, post-up specialist Carl Landry, three-point maven Brandon Rush and the promising 2nd year point guard Charles Jenkins.
Klay Thompson is still a big what-if in my book. He's established himself as a lights-out shooter, but is he fast or physical enough to cover the elite 2 guards in the league? The magic 8-Ball says: "signs point to 'no'".
At best, we've got a team of great shooters and some really good passing bigs, so the inside/out game should work to near-perfection. The perceptible downsides are youth, poor defense and the lack of a slasher in the Monte/ Derek Rose mode.
The log jam at SF could be troublesome with Barnes, Rush, Richard Jefferson and Draymond Green all jockeying for minutes.

Posted October 7th, 2012 07:49 PM IP I'm cautiously optimistic about Golden State's chances in the West. So many teams, including last year's playoff teams, are entering the season with a lot of unknowns:
- Dallas returns the big man, but has four or five new very significant players around Dirk.
- Utah has a potentially new backcourt in Mo Williams and emerging Alecs Burks (unless they put Hayward out of position again), not to mention the very real chance that they'll trade one or both of their best players--Jefferson and Millsap--knowing that their future is in Favors and Kanter.
That's just two 2011-12 playoff teams. Then you have teams like Phoenix, Houston, Portland, and New Orleans who blew it up. There are key new pieces in both LA teams, Minnesota, and even San Antonio (though not in their big stars).
With all those teams to be determined, I think Golden State could finish sixth if they get lucky; they could miss the playoffs again if they don't.
Curry is important, but with Jack on board, I think losing him wouldn't be as horrible as it would seem. Bogut is important, but I think Penick nailed it with his preferred scenario: if he's out for any length of time (ahem, when...), you put Lee in the middle and run like hell.
Barnes and Thompson definitely aren't the world's most athletic wings, though I think both are slightly underrated in that department (Barnes more than Thompson). And they will be able to really space the floor.
If Curry and Bogut are both healthy, that means you have a starting five where every guy is a smart passer, including the way-better-than-average-at-their-spots Bogut and Lee. And you have three shooters at the back spots. Just a tremendous starting five.
Landry and Bogut can really manufacture offense, which is nice if the shots don't fall.
If everyone stays relatively healthy, then defense will be the question, but what the team lacks in great one-on-one defenders, they do seem to have a roster of people who understand position and who give an effort.
(btw, as for Richard Jefferson, I'd say refer to my Detroit comments...he's had his time and isn't the future. Be respectful toward him in case you need him to fill in if there are wing-injuries, but otherwise let him sit. Convince him he's an assistant coach.) yes.

Posted October 20th, 2012 12:01 PM IP So a couple of days ago, I suggested to a friend that the most important player for the Wolves for the first few months of the season was actually Luke Ridnour, not Kevin Love.
My thinking was, with Rubio out, Ridnour is the one proven, legitimate PG on the roster. JJ Barea is really a scoring-minded change-of-pace guard, kind of a Nate Robinson. Malcolm Lee is really young and still evolving. Alexey Shved is more SG than PG and has a huge leap in level of competition. So Ridnour is really it.
But what if we lacked our All-Star, Love? Well, I posited, we have a former All-Star in jack-of-all-trades Andrei Kirilenko! He can step in at the PF spot if Love goes down, with Chase Budinger or last year's #2 pick Derrick Williams as the other forward. Right?
Well, fuck me, I guess we're about to find out. You no doubt saw by now, Kevin Love broke his hand (doing push-ups in his condo...???) and is out 6-8 weeks. yes.

In basketball in general news, the number 1 player in the country, Jabari Parker, visited MSU yesterday. He's down to 5 schools, with a lot of people saying it's between MSU and Duke. When Izzo really focuses on somebody, he usually gets them. If that kid comes here, we're gonna be tough to beat. Our Band could be Your Life.

Posted October 21st, 2012 12:17 PM IP Jabari Parker would be fantastic for MSU (or anyone else, for that matter). He's the kind of player MSU hasn't had many of (that I can recall), a big, versatile wing type guy. He actually strikes me as a more athletic version of the Duke tradition of those guys: Hill, Battier, Dunleavy, etc. Maybe Alan Anderson (hometown...Minneapolis) was that type of guy, but Parker is like 10x better.
Last I heard Parker still had a few other schools on his list, including dark-horse BYU (He is Mormon.), Stanford, and Florida.
Penick: sorry to hear that the never-ending question in Golden State is back. Curry rolling his ankle (again) and missing the rest of the preseason? Lovely...

He'd be a major haul for sure, we dont' usually get guys that are top 5 guys. Luckily enough, Izzo knows exactly the kind of guy he needs, so we don't necessarily need a bunch of blue chip players, but guys who fit into the system. I think the last really highly ranked guy (like top 5) was Shannon Brown. The rest are 'only' top 100 guys and below. Our Band could be Your Life.

Posted October 21st, 2012 04:34 PM IP I was about to argue that point, saying that they have more than their fair share of McDonald's All Americans. But I just checked, and I'm wrong. But while that was true in the late '90s and the early '00s, in recent years it has really been more one really highly rated guy a year, with other recruits more the kind of kid you coach up (but count on staying for 3-4 years). And surprisingly to me, there was a long dry spell between '03 and '10.
McDonald's All Americans since 1999:
2012: Gary Harris
2011: Branden Dawsen
2010: Keith Appling
-- DRY SPELL --
2003: Shannon Brown, Brandon Cotton
2002: Paul Davis
2001: Kelvin Torbert
2000: Zach Randolph, Marcus Taylor.
1999: Jason Richardson
I think it is just easy for me to forget that guys like Chris Hill, Maurice Ager, Alan Anderson, Drew Neitzel, Raymar Morgan, Kalin Lucas, and Draymond Green weren't high school all-americans. They were well regarded recruits--like you said, top 100 types--but not the upper eschelon.

Scary stuff to be sure, but happily all indications seem to be that Curry was simply kicked in the ankle, and no MRIs or x-rays were taken. He actually asked Mark Jackson if he could re-enter the game, but Jackson said "no" as a precautionary measure.

I think we're in the worse scenario, and I'll tell you why: I just got done watching my boys minus Curry and Bogut getting absolutely waxed by a LA Clippers squadron that looked like a only slightly less good version of Team USA.
I am heretofore retracting every optimistic statement I made previously about this year's Golden State Warriors. This team is in a lot of trouble, unless Curry and Bogut can somehow unite to elevate the entire squad.
Here are some of my observations from last night's shellacking:
Festus Ezili - Started at center for reasons that soon became obvious. Without a seven-footer in the front court, Golden State quickly becomes DeAndre Jordan and Blake Griffin's punching bag. Although Ezili looked lost in the headlights a lot of the time and got dunked on more than once, his presence is preferable to the Lee/ Landry small-ball front court Mark Jackson repeatedly threw out. I know we both thought Lee and Landry could serve as a serviceable starting unit until Bogut was fresh, but last night destroyed that notion completely for me. They were absolutely powerless... powerless!.. against L.A.'s bigs.
David Lee - Tried to shoulder too much of the offensive load and took some terrible shots as a result. Not a guy you can build your offense around. As previously mentioned, his defense was non-existent to the point of self-parody.
Carl Landry - A complete non-factor. His vaunted post game never materialized.
Klay Thompson - Should not be allowed back on the court until he can get his passing under control. Perhaps one of the worst single-game passing performances I've ever seen. Also shot a ton of bricks.
Jarrett Jack - Looked exceedingly mediocre starting in place of Curry, but did manage a couple of nice moves to the basket.
Charles Jenkins - Writing himself a one-way ticket back to the D-League. Without looking at the stats, I'm thinking he missed every single shot he took, of which there were several.
Harrison Barnes - Mostly stood outside the arc watching the rest of the action. This made him the best player on the Warriors by default.
Richard Jefferson - I never want to see this guy again as long as I live. Got fouled on a three and MISSED ALL THREE OF HIS FREE THROW ATTEMPTS. Loser. Clippers announcer comments something to the effect of: "when he came into the league his athleticism was ridiculous, but now all he ever seems to want to do is shoot corner threes". Yeah, that's a guy you want on your team.
Brandon Rush - Seemingly missed every shot he took. Not really what you want out of your "dead eye shooter".
Day Day Green - Looked comfortable running the point in the limited time he was out there, but he's severely undersized and was a non-factor defensively against L.A.'s bigs.
Andris Beidrins - No show. Get this guy a one way ticket back to Latvia.
Jeremy Tyler - Had one of the worst single game performances I've ever seen in terms of committing stupid fouls and dumb turnovers, but still managed to endear himself to me by being the only GS player on the court to demonstrate anything resembling swagger. His elbow to Griffin's jaw was the lone highlight of the game for Warriors fans.
The Dubs turned the ball over 22 times compared to the Clippers 13, and L.A. out-assisted Golden State 25-16. So yeah, not too happy with the Warriors right now!

Posted October 28th, 2012 10:40 AM IP Houston finally makes its move after years of pursuing a star. And I'm really surprised:
James Harden! Harden, Daequan Cook, Cole Aldrich (Minnesota native, gotta shout out), and Lazar Hayward go to the Rockets.
OKC receives (contract-year) Kevin Martin, rookie Jeremy Lamb, two 1st-rounders (Toronto's lottery protected, from the Lowry deal, and the Lakers', from the Jordan Hill deal) and one 2nd-rounder (Boston's, from the Courtney Lee deal).
Houston intends to sign Harden to a max extension immediately.
The Rockets can trot out a productive and still-young starting five:
PG - Jeremy Lin
SG - James Harden
SF - Chandler Parsons
PF - Terrence Jones / Patrick Patterson / Royce White
C - Omer Asik
With OKC, salary flexibility was obviously the key, with Martin off the books at the end of the year. An added benefit: Martin can still score, especially now that he's surrounded by Westbrook and Durant. Lamb is (I think) a great young prospect. And the picks are just more assets. yes.

Not quite, but you're on the right track. He and the team worked out an agreement that lets him drive (or be driven) by bus to games he feels would be reachable that way. He will also fly to games when it isn't practical.
As a fanatic Minneapolitan, my experience with White goes back maybe 5 years or so. And he has always been a huge reward / big risk kind of guy to have. For example, he was actually kicked out of the school where he first made a name for himself, De La Salle HS, for an academic issue. (Rumors were that he was caught cheating, but he was a minor and it's illegal for a school to give personnel details.)
Then he enrolled at powerhouse Hopkins HS (a near-west suburb that produces numerous DI players pretty much every year, including five from White's class, if I'm not mistaken) and was dominant as a complementary player. He led that team in rebounds and assists ... and a title.
Enrolls at the U of MN as their highest rated recruit in what is now this year's senior class, but of course never plays: first, arrested for shoplifting and knocking down a mall security guard; then blamed for stealing a laptop; and amidst it all, his bizarre youtube "retirement."
He leaves, and nobody minds, apparently having forgotten how easy it is to fall in love with him on the court. There are rumors about his transfer-year scout team dominance.
And of course last year, he dominates while at Iowa State. He comes out about his mental illness. He's a celeb. He dominates on national TV. And then comes the pre-draft chatter about his issues.
At the end of the day, he's a unique player and person. I don't think he's a bad kid, but there is no doubt that a certain amount of drama has always followed him. In some ways, both with his talent and circumstances, I almost would compare him to a Lamar Odom (who was also seen as hugely risky before his Lakers years). Very smart, very versatile, but always the drama.
Houston is smart, though: they hedged their bets. He was drafted low enough not to cost much, and he's in a position where they have three other guys who could fill the spot (Terrance Jones, Patrick Patterson, and Donatas Motiejunas).
yes.

And Steph Curry to an extension ... if he plays 70 games a year, it's a great contract even if he doesn't improve at all. Really, he's probably underpaid if he plays.
But if those damn ankles keep acting the way they have, that's a big chunk of money tied up in a guy in a suit at the end of the bench.
Wolves open tonight at home against Sacramento. Cautiously optimistic we can perform well even without our best player and arguably second-best player. As I've said before, Ridnour is the real key for the next two months: if he goes down with his creaky back, we're fucked. yes.

The hoped-for value of depth comes through, with not only our Lovesless and Rubioless team, but a tough night from Luke Ridnour, Brandon Roy and Nikola Pekovic. Yet guys like (shoot-first, second, and third) JJ Barea, Greg "Steamer" Stiemsma, and sometimes Chase Budinger really kept things going.
And I really liked Dante Cunningham. He's been with Memphis the past few years and I can't say I recall ever having seen him. But he's bouncy as hell. Basically he replaces Anthony Tolliver--whom I really liked--but brings a different dimension. Not the shooter, but just a higher motor. yes.

Posted November 4th, 2012 02:09 PM IP Oh, Penick, B. Rush out for the year. Yikes. Sorry. The worst part about it (obviously with the fact that anyone having a major injury is terrible for him personally and professionally...) is that it means the veteran wing presence is now going to have to be Richard Jefferson.
Relatively slow start for Harrison Barnes--playing all right, but really limited role--might mean they intended to bring him along cautiously. But now, you're looking at Barnes or Jefferson? I'd play Barnes as much as humanly possible. And you know what, when he has to sit, I'd put Thompson at 3 and play a small backcourt of Curry/Jack, if possible.
Wolves Game 2 in Toronto this evening. yes.

The Dubs hung tight and battled for four quarters for an amazing victory over one of the top teams in the west! Carl Landry is starting to look like the free agent acquisition of the year. I know it's too early to make any sort of prediction, but my optimism has been re-kindled!
Festus Ezili is looking like a great pick-up too. Really tough in the paint.
I agree with you that Barnes has to start. I have faith he'll develop if we play him. Now we just have to hope Bogut gets healthy and can play every game.

Posted November 9th, 2012 03:06 AM IP Ugh. Coming off of a win over the Cavs, it's being reported that the Warriors are shutting down Bogut for 7-10 days. At the end of that period, they are going to assess the health of his ankle. This does not look good.
I'm infuriated. I feel like they rushed him back ahead of schedule and pushed him too hard. He was clearly in pain during the Cavs game, having trouble running up and down the court. He was towing the company line today, but the look on his face was telling. His demeanor was that of a guy who was depressed and fatalistic.
I am going to implode if they ruined his ankle by overworking him early. The only bright spot is the play of Festus Ezili, who will go head to head against Dwight Howard tomorrow night. If Ezili gets injured a la Kwame Brown last year, it's all over. At best, they can sign Kenyon Martin. Anything but Beidrins. Please God, no Andris Beidrins!
