Posted December 21st, 2011 07:19 AM IPYou're lucky man, The Artist comes out here in Feb! Hazanavicius and Dujardin have previously made some very cheeky and cute Bond style comedies with the OSS 117 series of films.
But we need to get real - for scope and vision and the future of ADULT cinema, Von Trier and Malick shine the fucking way with Melancholia and Tree of Life. No question, no arguments, get used to it.
Hugo comes out here Boxing Day I think - will catch it then."Nick is the Mode guy. Jon is the Duran guy."

Posted December 21st, 2011 02:58 PM IPI didn't love it, but a few sections of it have really stuck with me, so it was definitely worth a watch
Coincidentally, I started watching The New World today but wasn't really feeling it - turned it off after 45 mins or so. I don't know if that's down to Colin-Farrell-avoidance syndrome, or if the film wasn't particularly engaging. You like that one Joe?"The other thing is that the quality of the mp3's I listen to varies especially as some of the music from the likes of Led Zeppelin is old, even with re-mastering still isnt up to the quality of the likes of Def Leppard."
Posted December 21st, 2011 03:04 PM IPI like 'em all, but yes Farrell is pretty noxious in any role (can't say he's necessarily miscast, he just sucks) - should wait 'til Christian Bale turns up. It's his weakest film, but the last 4 minutes make up for everything, it's probably the best segment he's ever done. Exquisite. Wagner gets it.

Posted December 21st, 2011 04:21 PM IPNew World is great. Give it a chance. It is beautiful but slow, but worth the effort.
Farrell is like anyone else, give him a good role and you forget the bullshit. Watch In Bruges. He's great in that. He wouldn't have been my first choice for Alexander The Great mind you.

See which? Sorry if you didn't get my Bill Hicks reference in the first post, just saw American and was 'inspired'.
If it's the Von Trier/Malick thing - I was just so damn thrilled to see challenging and personal films with grand aims and ambition, my apologies if that offends so greatly Dave.
But anyway, don't miss the opportunity to make up your own mind. It's fun."Nick is the Mode guy. Jon is the Duran guy."

OK, I won't argue then.

It's bugging me that i can't remember"The other thing is that the quality of the mp3's I listen to varies especially as some of the music from the likes of Led Zeppelin is old, even with re-mastering still isnt up to the quality of the likes of Def Leppard."

Posted December 21st, 2011 06:35 PM IPAh yeah, of course. It was either that or something to do with NKOTB.
That special is weird, btw. The English audience seems almost awestruck. Too quiet anyway. Apparently he really appreciated how well Britain took to him, but found some of the praise uncomfortable. To fuck with it a bit, he introduced the Goatboy character and would stretch those sections out just to make the audience feel uncomfortable. I actually think he's funnier when he's on home turf, as in the amazing Sane Man show. If you watch one Hicks show, make it that one. His ten minute Elvis bit is hilarious"The other thing is that the quality of the mp3's I listen to varies especially as some of the music from the likes of Led Zeppelin is old, even with re-mastering still isnt up to the quality of the likes of Def Leppard."

Anyway, back to Malick!"The other thing is that the quality of the mp3's I listen to varies especially as some of the music from the likes of Led Zeppelin is old, even with re-mastering still isnt up to the quality of the likes of Def Leppard."
Well, with Hollywood being more barren and bereft of ideas than it's ever been in its history (they're making 'Battleships' the board game into a film) it was such a pleasure to walk out of each film and have been so deeply moved and challenged. The fact that neither film was perfect but the pure audacity of what they were trying to achieve really dwarfed everything else I saw this year. Anyway, maybe I missed what you liked the most this year - if I changed the title to 'my favourite films of the...' it wouldn't rub so much the wrong way?
It's like my 2011 poll votes, I couldn't give a damn for objectivity about new stuff - it's just a vote for what moves me the most, something human. That's all we can ask for anymore."Nick is the Mode guy. Jon is the Duran guy."

Does that include the Charlie Hodge scarves and water skit?

Posted December 21st, 2011 06:45 PM IPCheck out the link above. The Charlie Hodge stuff was funny but in the Sane Man clip, i love how he starts picking up random objects from audience members, wiping his sweat on them and then giving them to other poeple. Also, the image of an old, poor Elvis touring with Steppenwolf is hilarious and tragic."The other thing is that the quality of the mp3's I listen to varies especially as some of the music from the likes of Led Zeppelin is old, even with re-mastering still isnt up to the quality of the likes of Def Leppard."

Posted December 22nd, 2011 07:42 AM IPThe Harry Potter finale was also enjoyable. Picked up Transformers 3: Dark of the Moon on DVD, but haven't watched it yet, so there can be no firm conclusion on this particular topic.
Will see The Artist, probably on DVD, though.
Don't generally watch Lars von Trier films, but maybe I'll check it out. The trailer with the Tristan music intrigued me, I guess.

Harry Potter was pretty good. However, I'd stay away from anything Transformers. I watched the first one (against my own doubts) and have regretted it ever since. Our Band could be Your Life.

Joe, totally agree. Profoundly beautiful film. Very wilfully arty but why not, someone has to make that sort of film occasionally rather than another superhero film (and I like superhero films - even Green Lamtern).
